The MoFiLA "Talk Like A Pirate Day" Meetup (9/19-ish):
sexyrobot, space kitty and I were kicking around the idea of holding a meetup on this holiest of holy days a couple of weeks ago.

The *Art Parade.
Do you suppose that someone associated with an art event might have considered that their logo design looks a bit … oFF? This is one parade where I’d not want to bring up the rear….

Curious Roving George
What's the deal with free movement within the EU? And does anyone have recommendations (besides possibly the UK) as to a good European country to move to to raise our kids?

Breakdowns Marked Path From Hurricane to Anarchy
There have been so many conflicting reports, rumours and denials , that it's been difficult to figure out what really happened in NOLA in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
While many would not consider the NYTimes to be completely impartial, this is the first story I've seen that exposes the weaknesses, mishaps and unfortunate circumstances that contributed to the disaster that followed, and does it in what appears to be a relatively balanced way.

Sitcom Doors
Do you remember where the doors were in sitcoms? Take the quiz to see how many you remember. ...and be reminded of how much of your life you have wasted in front of a tv... (hint: if a sitcom has a door that is even slightly to the rear, the quiz counts it as center rear, even if it is on the left rear or whatever)

Curious George: Katrina & mass media.
My favorite blogs paint an exceedingly dismal picture of the Katrina relief efforts. I'm curious whether (1) the mass media is running with these negative angles or has fumbled; (2) whether indy media is right on the mark or might be adding hype; and (3) what Joe "Support The Troops" Sixpack feels about our government's response. Thoughts? What's the prevailing sentiment down at the office or bar?
Aging George: skincare for men?
By surprise I've managed to make it into my late 30s, and staring into my mirror recently I decided it was time to make at least a token effort at keeping my skin zesty-fresh. My problem being, I don't really know where to start...

Riveting NOLA photojournal.
These are sad/beautiful/awe-inspiring/ugly.
They're taken by a Nicaraguan hotel worker in the French Quarter and they describe the disaster all the way from the storm preparation measures, the hurricane itself, the aftermath and initial optimism to the flooding, social breakdown and evacuation.
If you've ever been to the French Quarter, you'll recognize the streets in the photos.

A Lexus SC 430 convertible speeds down a sunny street in Cupertino. The top is down. Brushed Metal is behind the wheel, stabbing at the buttons on his mobile phone. We hear the connection ringing. Brushed Metal’s agent, Mike, answers.

How to Build a Pykrete Bong
- Pykrete is an incredible substance that has the strength of something like concrete and the malleability of ice, plus it melts verrrrrry sloooooowwwwly. Some of you might recall a WW2 story about Louis Mountbatten chucking a lump of pykrete at Winston Churchill's knob in the bath. Here's how to make a bong out of it. Pykrete, not Winston's knob.
