Aging George: skincare for men? By surprise I've managed to make it into my late 30s, and staring into my mirror recently I decided it was time to make at least a token effort at keeping my skin zesty-fresh. My problem being, I don't really know where to start...

So, I was wondering if the other Monkeys had any advice for a reasonable, simple skincare regime for a guy who gets panic attacks in the skincare aisle at his local supermarket? While specific product names would be welcome, I live in Australia, so I can't guarantee that I will be able to buy product XYZ. So, general descriptions of types of skincare products (ie active ingredients I should look for and so on) would also be very welcome! Oh, and did I mention that it should be simple? Yes, yes it should.

  • I am not even going to say it.
  • I find an Elmer's glue mask every so often feels wonderful. It sounds silly, but it really unclogs your pores. Keep it off the eyebrows.
  • Start with sunblock. The rest is just treating the symptoms. For cleaning, Noxema. It's a no-residue soap, and it feels nice. It's a good shaving cream, too. --Pat
  • Look here.
  • Gah! Try here.
  • Thanks for the MoFi link, beeswacky, will read and absorb (in more ways that one)
  • Gah! Try here.
  • bernockle: thanks for telling us you're not going to say it. Imagine my relief.

  • well, taking a serious poke at this one, I use Neutrogena Body Moisterizer. I've got a skin condition call ichthyosis which leaves one's skin 'dry like fish scales' (uggghhh) and using it on my face makes all the difference in the world. No one would ever think I'm in my 40's 'cause of my baby-soft skin. . .
  • Bernockle busy at work
  • I sincerely hope that this thread doesn't come prematurely to a conclusion.
  • Bernockle busy at work... Uh..what have you got planned with those pliers, bernockle?
  • 1)sunblock, sunblock, sunblock. 2)Neutrogena makes good facial cleansers. Their regular old face wash comes in a soap bar, and it smells really good (unless you get the unscented). I like it a lot, and it's easy. 3)After you wash your face, put on a moisturizer with sunblock. (I actually don't like Neutrogena's, because it stings my eyes, but you may like it.)
  • Issima Fluid Hydratation Jeunesse IP 15. A gift from a caring someone that said it could help those, erm, 'expression lines' look a little smoother. I use it somedays. It seems to be working. Maybe. Erm...
  • Check what you put on your face. Use sunblock. And fire bernockle as beauty consultant
  • My top tip: stop using any shampoo or soap ever. Have a shower every day, but just wash with water, and a shower brush. Use a hairbrush on your scalp in the shower. You get greasy for about 2 days, then your skin will be as soft and radiant as a baby owl's arse.
  • Not sure about the owl's arse effect, but I can back Wibbleflex up on the no shampoo bit. I used to just wash my hair in water, or occasionally with a brew of rosemary, which some local farmer type used to swear by for dog's coats - hair was never healthier after the oil overproduction settled down. Got a bit messed up when I used to swim regularly though, I think die to all the chlorine in the pool, so had to sart using shampoo again then.
  • Cod sperm. Don't knock it till you try it.
  • Cod sperm? Maybe that will work for the damn fish. But we are talking about humans.
  • Udder lotion.
  • The addition of proteins from cod 'milk' stimulates the immune system of salmon cells. We have seen the same effect on live salmon, and we believe the result can be tougher, more resistant salmon. Good god almighty. Salmon bukkake. Or at least a tougher, more resistant planetthoughtful. 'Zesty-fresh' doesn't seem to come with this recipe, though.
  • I second es el Queso (in the other thread) about Kiehl's's's products.

  • I just want to know what quidnunc would suggest.
  • Who gives a shit?
  • I don't think that would be good for the skin, so I'm not giving any.
  • Purpose face wash, either the gel or the bar soap every day at least once (twice if you work out later inthe day), followed by Purpose SPF 15. Purpose, by Johnson & Johnson, is soapless, irritant free and pretty inexpensive. It canbe found at all major drug and grociery stores. It is also the only thing my ritzy-ladies dermatologist says to use (that is, he is not a ritzy lady, but is the guy to go to if you are a bored, rich housewife who wants to look 32 again).
  • Skin is an organ, it needs proper nutrition. Smoking is very bad for it, as is exposure to sunlight. Fish oils are supposed to be good. It all goes back to "You are what you eat" http://www.healthy.net/scr/article.asp?ID=1274
  • The Greater Sooty Owl hath all my heart and I have his, who wears his topknot o'er a feathered phiz and daily treats his skin with creamy owl....
  • Cod cum? Good god. Life has become a fucking Douglas Adams novel.
  • Oh crap now I remember where I left that old HGTTU copy I can't find... no, really this is not a joke Thanks Chy!
  • It's HGTTG, Flagpole. I think some fans call it H2G2 as well. /closet Adams fan
  • I find that a good scrubbing face cleaner (one of the ones with little grains of whatever in it) two or three times a week helps quite a bit; keeps the pores from getting too clogged. Of course it doesn't do everything, so if there's a way to get my nose to look less like an orange peel by the end of the day (without resorting to some sort of owl or cod bukkake facials!) I'd like to hear about it.
