Slashdot effect: a force for good? On November 8th, 2001, Distributed Proofreaders was slashdotted for the first time, with others over the years (third graph down). OK, so it's bad form to link to a site where they need to sign in, just so they can read a post, but really....everyone should be in distributed proofreading anyway.

Scrap metal or ICBMs? First off, this is from an admittedly far-right website, The World Tribune, but it brings up an interesting discussion point. What I find odd is that in right's effort to prove their reason for war, (i.e. the existence of weapons of mass destruction) they have exposed a huge flaw in their reasoning and execution of war, namely the distribution and spread of WMDs in the anarchy of post invasion. Like many folks who opposed this war I did not even argue with the assertion that Saddam had WMDs, just that the war and its aftermath would allow for any weapons, should they exist, to fall into the hands of other far more fragmented political groups/terrorist organizations than Bathist Iraq. Looks like this might have been the case.

Superheroes In Capes and Evil Masterminds. Real Ones. "Henley points to one woman who dressed up in a costume to fight evil, albeit the comparatively minor evil of people trying to take advantage of drunk women at bars. And there are others, Super Barrio, defending or Mexico City's poor, or Angle Grinder Man, striking a blow against police boots on London's cars. But what of supervillains?" more inside
