Gmail is for monkeys Curious George: Anyone still need Gmail?

I've got a few invites left. After taking care of my friends, I sold one a month ago for $100(!). The woman from Texas spent an extra $15 to express mail me a traveler's cheque. Two weeks ago, I sold another one for $50. But now the market's flooded, and the going rate is $5-10 (gmailswap.com). I feel slightly guilty for profiting, but it's hard to argue with the market. So as penance, the first two to ask, will receive! I encourage anyone else who's got extra invites to take care of the rest. I browsed the MeFi beggars list, and I don't know any of those guys, but I do know you monkeys! (Please post here to save your spot)

  • That is a kindly offer. I'll wait for it to go Gold. No hurry.
  • Hum. Tempted. Probably better than yahoo.
  • I received one as a birthday present already. Am infinitely grateful, and have been telling almost all my RL friends to start sending me nifty stuff to my gmail account.
  • Ok, I'll bite.
  • Ok, time to lose all shame in myself... ME ME ME!!! Pick me!!!! *covers head and runs away*
  • Um, I meant, thank you very much for your offer, Daniel! I would Love to take you up on it.
  • Daniel, if you've still got one left I'd be eternally grateful.
  • IgnorantSlut might be eternally greatful, but I will be your best friend forever.
  • I'm still a little surprised that people actually pay money for them. I know they're semi-exclusive, but the actual account is nothing special apart from the gig of space. Mine's a quarter-full of spam already.
  • What does Gmail do that Opera' mail client doesn't (besides work on machines without Opera installed)?
  • I'll take out your trash, sort the mail, do the laundry, etc. ::grins while stepping in front of IgSlu and PatB::
  • Tracy, I think what most people are paying for is first dibs on the name of their choice. The beta will eventually open, but then you're competing with everyone else in the world for easy to remember/descriptive e-mail addresses without a string of numbers appended to the end. Genial, PatB, I've sent the invitations out. Can anyone take care of IggySlut, please?
  • (like I said, I would give it to the first two who asked. I wish I had more!)
  • trac, have you seen a free web-based email service with a better interface? I certainly have not. The Gmail interface, like the TiVo remote, was designed intelligently and elegantly.
  • Oh dear. I'll send one out as well. So we have three people right? PatB, genial and IgSlu. Daniel, you wanna pick two? I'll give the third my invite. There, all settled. Just as long as we don't get any more requests *cross fingers*
  • *hit head with hammer* please somebody tell me to read the thread more carefully next time, before I go stuffing it full of nonsense. IgSlu, one invite coming right up!
  • YAAAAAAY! *dances around the computer*
  • I have two invites. One carries a condition that you use one of your invites on a specific person for me. First come, first serve. spartacusroosevelt@gmail.com
  • weee.... I'm waiting by my email box Alnedra. Thanks!
  • And i didn't even spam-proof my email address. I guess that will test the gmail spam filter won't it?
  • Can someone please explain what all the fuss is over Gmail and why people are paying trumped up fees? Why would I want to get everyswingingdick@gmail.com when I can get that on everyswingingdick@myownserver.com? I have been trying to figure this out and am getting nowhere.
  • I would love a gmail account...
  • The interface and threading is pretty kicking rolypoly and that is a big selling point.

I once heard that Bob Mould was such an early AOL subscriber his email was bobm@aol.com. It probably wasn't but everyone expects gmail to be as ubiquitous as yahoo mail or hotmail and everyone wants to be their own version of bobm@gmail.com. Personally I just use the email off my own domain.
  • I got an acount just so [myname]@gmail wasn't taken by someone else. Luckily it came with a blogger account, so it didn't cost me nothing. And I've found that, given the ample mailbox, it can be used for a cache/repository of files for two or more people to access wherever there is browser access. Now, if only they upped the attachment size limit to, say, 20 megs...
  • got 1 remaining for a fellow monkey
  • would it be terribly inappropriate for a lurker to kindly and timidly request an invite? i'd really like the 1 gb space (especially with my uni account about to die)...
  • Wheeeeee! Thanks Daniel! This is most definitely why I love Monkeyfilter.
  • May I please have one if there's one to spare? Thanks!
  • Pretty please? I know i came late but if there's one to spare i'd love to get rid of hotmail! And i'll pay it forward if i do get invites.
  • *been thinking* Okay, I've succumbed to temptation, too late, naturally.
  • So, these invites? How long do they take to show up? My mailbox is so lonely.
  • IgSlu, I don't know. I've already sent the invite out right after my last post. I hope it got through, cos I'm down to my last invite *cross fingers* maybe they send them out in batches a couple of times a day?
  • hrrmmm... we'll see. Did you use the address in m profile? Either way, you rock my socks with your generosity.
  • These invites, they vibrate? And if they do and you have a spare, I'm game.
  • Did you use the address in m profile? Yep. copied and pasted to be safe. No problems :) just pay it forward, is all.
  • IgSlu, I did a little cheat. Forwarded the invite via my Sent Mail folder. Fortunately there's a link in the sent mail, and it should work. Check your email.... NOW.
  • Ok. I admit that the GB of space would be really sweet (really really sweet...), don't you think it's a little too creepy?
  • Alnedra, you are awesome. I got the forward and I'm in like Flynn. Thanks again. Can anyone tell me where/how I can invite another?
  • A warning about gmailswap.com--it's gone downhill. In the beginning, requests/offers were reasonable, and there was a spirit of giving in the group. (It takes a lot of trust to send someone $100, blind.) Now there's a lot of hucksters and swindlers, and a lot of people have gotten taken. People went there because the eBay and Craig's List offerings were slimy. Now it's getting to be on par with that. re: Gmail-is-creepy.com--every argument on that page is silly. It's already been hashed out in a recent MeFi thread. The fault lies in the user who brings an expectation of privacy to an inherently non-secure medium. IggySlu: you can't, yet. Once Google decides to issue another round of invites, a red link will appear prompting you to "invite a friend to gmail." In the past it was based on activity (I suspect), but this latest round of invites seems to be a mass push by Google (every account got 3 invites, regardless of age or activity). Perhaps they're trying to avoid a massive crush on their servers opening day.
  • I have two invites left. My user name at the gmail domain is "skriket". Mail me a request. First come, first served.
  • Um, late to the party as ever, but if anyone has an invite left I would love to hear from you :)
  • I got my gmail account from a wonderful monkey. I'm still loving the_bone. (hahah, that pun never gets old)
  • Another thing a lot of people are using Gmail for is the googling of your email archives (from which you'll rarely have to delete anything, at least not for several years). People who have a high volume of email, a large amount of which is important, are forwarding all their mail there from their regular client - so it serves a purpose both as a back-up and as a searchable archive. For the overproductive alpha geeks out there, as the man says, this is useful. I know a few people who've started doing this already, and they report that it is goooood. I like because you don't have to worry about large attachments, ever, the interface is extremely well done, and it's just generally cool that there's finally a webmail service that doesn't utterly suck when compared to websitebashi@mybigfatdomainname.com - for someone who bounds around different computers a lot, it's pretty sweet. I'd say about half my mail activity now happens through gmail, when I only actually got it in the first place to grab my name before the artist, the judge or the C&W singer did... No invites right now, sorry - I did have one, but it's just gone. But maybe we should form a waiting list, so that as and when monkeys have spare invites, they can just go to the next person on the list?
  • If you go to the Reviews link on the gmail home page, you'll find a link to a blog post by one Matt Haughey, extolling the virtues of gmail. For my part, I lurrrrve gmail. I just gave out my latest batch of invitations to friends, but when I get more (it may be a while), I'll try to hook a monkey up.
  • I got one through gmailswap - for free, luckily enough. Some guy just decided to send me the code, without going through signing up, etc. I am not convinced by the user interface, though. It's so crowded and ugly. Still, to be free of yahoo/hotmail/etc...I love having webmail but am disenchanted with the service elsewhere. Speaking of that - I am still looking for a second invite...I'd repay by passing any I got onto monkeys.
  • Well, Ive been a busy Monkey this morning... finally downloading Mozilla so that I could a) Log into Mofi and b)Log into my Gmail account. And I also have an invitation up for grabs. I lost track of who still needs one. Surlyboi? As a peace offering for thinking you were an angry dyke?
  • If there are any extra floating around, I'd love to have one as well. I promise to spread the karma.
  • Please, do Kimdog. And no problems with the angry dyke thing, my friend got a kick out of it.
  • On the way, Surlyboi.
  • Hey, I'd like to have one, if there's an extra floating. But consider me low priority, as other monkeys seem to be much more eager. I can wait until it opens up, no problem. But if you have an extra, and if you think that I'm a swell guy, and if you take pity on the fact that nobody loves me and I never got a pony ride on my birthday and my wife won't let me have a motorcycle and there's no way I can ever be president after the videotapes from last weekend start circulating and I think it's going to rain today and I don't have any money for beer, then please feel free to send me an invite.
  • As the script kiddies would say, "Kimdog si teh r0x0r." Thanks muchly Kim, I'm a "G" now. =)
  • I've got a couple spare. I'll send them to the first coupla people to email me at blaisebaileyfinnegan (at) gmail.com. Spread the monkey lovin'!
  • Yay! Got one thanks to BBF! Amusingly, yahoo classified my invite as "Bulk"-mail.
  • Blaise is the living embodiment of all that is good and generous. I'll keep the karma going here if/when I get some invites.
  • Being less scattered in thread-checkery is one of my new resolutions. Particularly if it meant some lovely individual would be willing to invite me to be a cool kid too. Uh, please? With maybe cherries, and sprinkles, if you're into that kinda thing?
  • Still looking for an invite - if anyone has an invite to spare. I'll pay it forward. Thanks
  • If there're any open invites still floating around, I'd love to be included, too. Moo!
  • Can anyone offer advice to an invitee who has OS9? Apparently gmail doesn't work under OS9 and I wondered if there's a trick to get around it.
  • If there was an extra one floating around I would love people forever. please?
  • Tracy: I just acquired a Powerbook and am using Safari. Your problem isn't an OS issue (I don't think), but a browser issue. Evidently you need the _latest_ version of that browser in order to use gmail; I had to download the update before I'm not certain if said update will run on OS 9, since I know diddly-shit about Macs. If you follow the link that pops up when you try to use gmail on an unsupported browser, it will take you to the page with the Safari update. I think.
  • boney, Safari isn't available on OS9... Tracy, which browsers have you tried? Doesn't mozilla (and it's diravatives: firefox, camino, netscape, etc.) all share the same codebase that works with Gmail? As far as I know, mozilla et al. is the only browser for OS9 that's still being actively developed. But I'm surprised IE on OS9 wouldn't work...
  • Oh, um... I knew that. /mac newbie
  • I'll have to check with said invitee, and/or point them at this thread.
  • If it isn't too late I'd like an invite. Groddzi.
  • No gMail on OS9. The 'modern' browsers supported don't run on less than OS10.1. No Safari, either. I use Netscape 7.1. And be wary of firewalls; I've had a couple glitches (attachments not showing up) when accesing at work. At home, no probs.
  • When's the last time you've checked Flagpole? Safari works just fine now... (this was a recent development)
  • I have *one* invite left. Gmail addy is alnedra.mofi. First one in gets it! If I don't reply to you in a couple of hours, write back again, the last time I sent out invites, there were problems.
  • hey monkeys, who's still waiting? i've still got my two invites, amazingly, so drop me an email.
  • beandip, you have a really cute username.
  • If you have a Gmail account, will you eventually (well before it goes public) get invites that can be handed out?
  • I've had my account about a month and a half, and I was given three invites the other day.
  • my last invite has been sent. hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
  • Danny - i figure you too will get some invites to give out... when i got my first gmail acct in mid-may a week went by and then suddenly there was an "invite your friends" link. then again last week on that same acct i got another 3 invites to give away. i sent myself one (because i wanted a more formal username than my first one) and within 24 hours that new acct also had 3 invites to give away.
  • May I grovel for a gmail address too? As a token of thanks I'll send along an autographed copy of one of my books (no, I'm not famous by any stretch).
  • Hey. I'm still hoping for a GMail account. i promise no snaky emails. Please?
  • OK, in my secondary gmail addy, I have 2 invites left. The first two emails I receive at this address... [thebone][@][gmail.com] (notice that, unlike my username, there's no underscore in "thebone") ... will get a gmail hookup. I'll check later tonight. All respondants will receive a nude picture of Ernest Borgnine. This is penance for my poo-flinging in the Thread That Shall Not Be Named. /cthulhu
  • i have 2 invitations pending... i offered them yesterday but i haven't heard back if they want them. if i don't hear back by tomorrow evening i will give them away to a couple of monkeys instead.
  • goetter: you emailed me and were respondant #1, but I couldn't tell if you were requesting a gmail account or were just making a joke at daisy_may's expense. Not like that's a bad, thing, though. At any rate, it's yours if you like; lemme know. The other winner was self-proclaimed "useless font of knowledge" and Ernest Borgnine aficionado InfraMonkey. Yay, InfraMonkey!
  • the_bone is the_man!
  • Word.
  • okay! my invitations are sent! pass it on, monkeys! and thanks, interrobang. not as cute as yours! ;)
  • If anyone has any invites left, I'd be pleased as banana punch to get one. Email's in the profile.
  • Invites, I've got three. Email me and beg.
  • I've also got 3 invites now (that was fast!) and of course you all get first pick. [genial][@][gmail.com]. I have no shame and take all kinds of favors ;)
  • Damn, that was quick. I've got two to spare. Schmail me at mwreed [at] gmail.com and you too can have one, first come, first served! Also, the gift of a solid gold Patek Phillipe Calatrava will bump you to the top of the list.
  • I'm there too! I f***ed up the first, but I have one to go. First one to Gmail me at the addy on my profile page gets it! PS: Daniel is now Danielbashi!
  • I anyone still handing out accounts? I would love love LOVE one! Thanks so much. You monkeys are the best!
  • Ok, mine's gone.
  • Mine too. Hope they got through okay, Weezel and Pez.
  • I've two got invites. Come and get 'em. First two Mofi members to email me. See profile. They're giving these out so quickly I think it's ready to go public. Hot damn.
  • All gone.
  • I've still got two left - hot hot hot!
  • I've got one more left for anyone who missed out.
  • Danny Kay, you are a rockstar. Thanks again, buddy.
  • middleclasstool is my hero! you get the special banana, straight from my secret stash! )
  • The special banana? Sounds dirty. Then again, I'm not one to talk. See username.
  • Thanks middleclasstool. So now I'm a tool of a tool. Eh. Could be worse.
  • I have wrangled one invite from my friend Aki. Her username is Klytemnestra (overflow from the movie Troy, no doubt). Please pass her your username and tell her you're from MoFi. If you're in KOL also, all the better. She'll be glad to talk to you!
  • Okay, Kimberly and Cali, I've sent yours out - if you've already gotten invites from someone else, then pass it along to jim_t, plz.
  • Those of you with yahoo accounts may notice a certain recent catch-up scramble.
  • I have one more to pass on. Who missed out?
  • tracicle, jim_t emailed me third, and I only had two inviites to give out.
  • Done, PF.
  • Well, not done. What's with his email address?
  • Aki just called. Uh... she's wondering if Mofites don't accept invites from non-Mofites... sorta thing.
  • I'm all out for now, hope you all enjoy. This is a great thread!
  • Better late than never? Would there be any invite codes left for little ole me? I was moving, and then I forgot my login info (Doh!), so I prolly missed out.
  • Thanks PF! Now I have room for all those pirat- I mean, all my back up files. Of stuff I own. Yeah, that's the ticket...
  • jim_t and I got one! Woohoo! Thanks you guys. We really appreciate them. I promise the minute I get invites I will pass them on so other monkeys can have them. Tracicle, pls send your invite to phiggy so he can join in the fun too.
  • Or she. I hate it when I do that.
  • Got three more, if anyone still cares. my email is on my profile page.
  • If anyone needs, I've got an invite as well. Spreadin' the G Love. You're on your own for the special sauce though.
  • I'd really appreciate it, surlyboi, if you've still got it.
  • I have a couple invites. Write me at bookgirl at gmail.com if you want one.
  • i have one invitation reserved for 2 days for the first monkey who asks me for it.
  • I really wish Yahoo hadn't improved their service in response to gmail, since now all my yahoo accounts are really butt-slow, and there's some important emails I need to dredge up right now.
  • I recieved a couple more now. Anyone still left in the cold can email me for one. :)
  • phiggy, or anyone else, I'll have to wait for a couple of my invites to be returned before I can hand them out again. Apparently it takes 3 weeks, so I'll check back here then. It sounds like everyone that wanted one got one, though. :)
  • Darshon has missed out.:( Anyone got any left to hand out? I'd love one....Thanks!
  • Ok, one invite sent to Reuven, per his email request. I currently have one left.
  • I have two invites left. If anybody still wants one of them, email me at my profile e-mail.
  • Genial, thanks so much, I appreciate the invitation!:)))
  • BTW, genial, where is your picture in the "I'll show you mine...." link? Hhmmm?
  • Whoa, I've got three more invites already! Send me an email if you're still waiting for one! :)
  • Heh, I really need to read further down. I sent one to Reuven as well...
  • And it appears I've sent a superflous invitation to Darshon. Give it to someone you love, Darshon... And cheers, again, Darshon, and all the other monkeys who helped with my student project.
  • Hey, I got me another three invites! Anybody still out in the cold?
  • Thank you and your welcome, dng.:)
  • Alnedra, still sitting here freezing in the cold, would love an invite into the warmth. Much Appreciated
  • Invite has been duly sent, Iloyder. Now get wrapped up before you catch your death of cold :)
  • I think I spelled your nick wrongly. eep. Profound apologies!
  • Thanks Alnedra, , I'll keep an eye out for the invite. Drink's if you ever stop by London. Does anyone know how long the invites take to arrive? I'm an eager beaver :-)
  • There's a small problem with my mail. Sometimes the invites don't arrive. Give it another ten minutes, and I'll forward the mail. The link's the same anyway. And I will probably be in London at the end of the year. Will be keeping your drink in mind now *grin*
  • Sheesh, I have four more invites. I think the market's saturated. Anyone still making money off them?
  • I would respectfully love an account, if anyone was willing to grace me with their generosity. My address is stephen j flanagan at the hotmail.com.
  • Darshon, your quite welcome and as for the picture, and as for "Showing you mine" I'll have to dig something up. ;)
  • Dawson, you've got it.
  • I've got an invite just itchin' for an inbox. Anyone?
  • genial, did you ever know that you're my hero? It hasn't come yet, but thanks a million. I [heart] MoFi (and genial). So how do you do a heart sign?
  • Gorranuvverinvite. Woo. Anybody still left ungmailed? Ask me nicely, using a term of endearment if you feel so inclined, bearing in mind that my name is tom phillips, there's a dot in the middle of that, and it's at the site we're currently discussing so fervently. Seriously, though, at the current rate of exponential invite-based expansion, the number of gmail accounts will surpass the population of the world sometime in mid-July. Shortly to be joined by the number of social networking sites, atwhich point social networking sites will start aggregating around people to keep track of other social networking sites they are FOAFs of and enjoy gmailing regularly. The amount of free storage available will eventually allow everybody to upload and store the atomic pattern of the major joints in their body, thus finally freeing humanity of the accursed burden of knees. Kneeless, will shall frolic joyously in the trees, although without elbows it will be hard to reach some of the farthest branches. Meanwhile, hipswap.com will become the most popular website in the world - visited by over 2 million social networking sites a day - and its creator (J. Loy, esq.) will become President of The Moon.
  • silly dawson, a heart's a <3 hehe. i <3 being able to invite people (RXR, that Gmail competitor rocks)
  • I think Dawson meant ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥... Just type (ampersand)hearts(semicolon) - but you have to redo it after preview, otherwise it spacks up. ♠
  • Magic! I &heart; you all.
  • Goddammit! $hearts;$hearts;$hearts;$hearts;$hearts;$hearts;$hearts;$heart; $hearts;$hearts;$hearts;$hearts;$hearts;$hearts;$hearts;$hearts; $hearts;$hearts;$hearts;$hearts;$hearts;$hearts;$hearts;$hearts; That's better.
  • Now I just want to use bad language. ♥ ??
  • Woo hoo! Preseverance pays off!!! Sorry everybody. I'll stop posting now.
  • ♣ Dawson to death :-)
  • I'll dig his grave with a ♠.
  • ♥ hehe, no problem Dawson, hope the email in your profile was correct.
  • I have some to give away as well. See my profile...Thanks!
  • ...and a shoutout to Ambrosia for the invite. Thanks!
  • you're welcome!
  • flashboy is now my hero. I'll pass on the favour if/when I get some invites.
  • In addition to her charming sobriquet, beandip is delightful and enchanting. In mentioning this I am entirely unmotivated by the topic of this thread, obviously, and am absolutely unbiased, feeling only that she has not yet recieved sufficient public adulation.
  • A pleasure, someother. :-) You will be pleased to hear that, although today might be Urine Day on MoFi, I believe tomorrow is Multi-Cycle Path Auto-Generation Day. (It's either that or Take Your Daughter To Work Day, I can never tell those two apart.) Note to other new users: someother has set a tremendous example for what a first MoFi comment should be like. Perhaps a little redundant after the first five words, but those five are words that you would do well to simply copy and paste. Repeatedly.
  • flashboy is now my hero. Uh...ok. flashboy is now my hero. flashboy is now my hero. flashboy is now my hero. flashboy is now my hero. flashboy is now my hero. flashboy is now my hero. Back on track, I've still got three invites, four if I count Aki's. Anybody still gmailess?
  • I've lurked all this time, just for the chance to write those first five words. Strangely my daughter has never been too excited about my work. "Oh, he does something to do with computers" is about her limit. I'm sure that if I was associated with Big Brother or Changing Rooms I could be someones hero ...
  • aw gosh. thanks, ilyadeux! hehe. ♥ that's great
  • Someother, you work in computers? You can be my hero! My dad works on big container vessels, but it's when he's finagling around with computers that I love talking to him the most.
  • I also have many Gmail invites sitting unused. Shoot me an email if you want one of them.
  • OK, deep breaths... I ♥ gmail and MoFo. ????
  • Result!
  • The bar has been raised. I think that anybody who wants to get a Gmail invite from now on must, at the very least, match this level of dedication. Just asking isn't enough any more - not when there's geek theatre on demand out there.
  • *fondles invites with malicious glee*
  • Is there still anyone without an invite that wants one?
  • A month ago someone wanted to trade a 3Com Audrey for my invite. I chose the $100 instead... damn. This whole affair has really reminded me of the dot-com days...
  • Invites, I got em. Mail me, monkeys.
  • Heh, same here. Lots of invites. See profile. Are we at the point where people have to be paid to take these invites?
  • For those who want POP access: POP goes the Gmail work really well (Oh yes, shamelessly stolen from Slashdot). It requires the .net framework to be installed.
  • Perhaps this is a stupid question, but how do people get a) invites, b) so damn many? I have a gmail account myself thanks to the kindness of mefi wiki, but i don't understand how it works.
  • Add me to the list, I got more. This thing has to be going public as quickly as they've been handing out invitations. Shotsy, the benevolent fairies of Googland dole them out according to whim. If you get some, there'll be a red text link near the top of your screen that says something like "Invite a Friend".
  • I have three invites. e-mail me at kimberly [at] squoogy [dot] com if you want one. Put "gmail invite for a monkey" or some such so I know it's you :)~
  • I have six invites still left, by the way.
  • Holy cow. Gmail is just throwing those invites away now. Public launch eminent.
  • 3 invites here just out from the oven. Email me. Grab them while they are hot.
  • Ok I'm out. :)~
  • I still have mine. See my gmail address above, if interested.
  • I have two. Email me at tracyh at gmail or admin at monkeyfilter.
  • I've got three to give away. Email me if interested.
  • I got one, just because I didn't want to miss out and everyone seemed so gosh-darn excited by the whole thing. So, can someone tell me why I needed another email (or gmail) address? Does it vibrate?
  • It does vibrate. (Seriously, though, it's acres better than hotmail or yahoo, if only because there aren't any stupid pics of sexy younglings lounging around.)
  • Also, I have twelve invites left, as of now, and some of those I've sent out aren't being claimed. If you have any friends or acquaintances or sycophants or menial labor, send their desires my way, and it's pamccf, you know where.
  • What?!? No sexy younglings? Oh, screw that, then.
  • I give them away, they give me more. bluestone art gmail.com.
  • They haven't given me any invites. Or maybe I am not seeing them, or have not used the account enough.
  • I have six invitations left, if anyone is still looking for one... jb- look for a link just above the "refresh" button that says "Invite a friend to join Gmail!" -that will tell you how many invitations you have.
  • if you have them
  • Good point, PF- *if* she has them. By the way, scratch that bit about me having six invitations left. The correct number is twelve, thanks to the newly generous folks at Google. Makes me think jb has gotta have some...
  • How long will it be before every single person with the capability of getting on-line will have a gmail address? I have two invites left as well, and there seems to be a plethora of them around in various fora, blogs, etc.
  • It's all a very clever way to find the leaders of the 'net. Why target X with advertising if he only manages to get two people onboard, when you can target Y and her fifty friends? Word of mouth is cheaper, and if we know that Y has fifty friends she's in regular contact with, then maybe she'd like to try a free sample. Course I use gmail, so this is all really just tinfoil stuff.
  • Pez, yup. Also, I noticed the address that I've been giving more invites out wiht has gotten like 2-3x more invites than the addresses I haven't given scarcely any out from. Also, I'm sure they're tracking who's giving to whom.
  • Tho I trust google miles more than I do yahoo, ethics-wise.
  • I still don't have any, but I have been fairly inactive with the account so far (just not sending email, as I've just gotten to the UK). So I signed it on a very active email list, and see if that changes things. I am very grateful to Mm who sent me the invitation.
  • I have 3 invites available...email me" ewurama (at) gmail (dot) com.
  • Are Hotmail And Yahoo! Blocking Gmail Invites? Shamelessly lifted from MeFi.
  • I sent one to a Yahoo account and the user said she had to wade through her "Bulk Mail" box to find the invite. So I'd believe it.
  • Are Hotmail And Yahoo! etc. Wouldn't be surprised. All the more reason to switch to gmail. Ethics.
  • Despite only getting the account a few days ago (cheers, genial) I have invites now if anyone needs 'em. Address is stephen and then a dot and then flanagan at the site in question. (Had to a pick a 'sensible' address because I need it for work... stupid work.)
  • Just wanted to say thanks to ramix for sending me an invite. As soon as I get some invites, I'll post them here in case anyone still wants one.
  • I usually get invites as fast as I give them out. I currently have 6 invites if anyone still wants one, or even has friends that want them. Email addy is in the profile.
  • Grrr, now I have seven! I don't have any more friends!
  • BrokeVespa, you're more than welcome. Tracicle, i know how you feel. I woke up this morning and both my gmail accounts had been refreshed with 6 invites each. I'm going to have to start begging people to take them soon i think!
  • Google is thwarting my evil plan to corner the gmail's invites market.
  • I wonder if they're just holding off to see when invitees stop coming because the market (so to speak) is saturated, and then they'll open to the public under the assumption that there won't be a huge rush. So if we can't get rid of these, gmail will go public tomorrow!! *panics, runs around crashes into things*
  • I just want to tell you both good luck, we're all counting on you.
  • glances... okay, so it's hopeless to give them away now, but I still promised I would. I have six invites available. versive (you know) gmail.com. You don't even have to amuse me or send me chocolate... I come cheap. Lurkers also entertained, since I am one, and was gifted by one (thank you again!).
  • Hmm, I'm up to seven. Anyone have a pet they'd like to give gmail to? A distant cousin? An imaginary friend?
  • My gmail invites have gmail invites. I'm sending them to addresses I randomly type in. Somewhere in the world klj^&*(^&(jkl...fjioapw\\@gaymidgetpr0n.com has an invitation.
  • ijustwanttotellyoubothgoodluckwereallcountingonyou@gmail.com
  • Hey, good idea, bonesy!
  • Damn. Between 6 and 30 characters long, only.
  • lookslikeipickedthewrongweek@gmail.com dontcallmeshirley@gmail.com
  • sigh, I cave. If anyone has an invite left (tee-hee!), I'd like to try it out. Thanks!
  • Thanks, middleclasstool!
  • Thanks to Zemat for my new g-mail account, which I will activate very soon. I could have sworn there was mention of invites going to spam in yahoo & hotmail, but I couldn't find it on search. Well, my invite came via yahoo, and yeppers, into spam it went. Thank God I remembered that thread (or dreamed it), because I *never* look at my spam (over 100 a day).
  • Anybody else want one?
  • well, if you still have an invite left, another email address can't hurt me. fire away, anyone (address is in my profile).
  • actually, nevermind, all. just got a gmail invite from blogger. so, hey, anyone need an invite? boy they really are dragging the bottom of the barrel if they're giving me one, huh?
  • Anyone? Bueller?
  • Oh what the hey. Anyone who wants to get rid of a gmail invite, please fire it off to sbrightshinything(at)yahoo(dot)com. I'll watch for it in my spambox. Muchas gracias!
  • actually i'm waiting for the invite to magically appear. i don't know what i need to do to get the invite to send to anyone. herm... perhaps i need to have had the gmail longer than like a day or somethin'?
  • CLF - It's pretty random. Eventually you'll get a link in the interface that screams "Invite Others".
  • I just tried to log into gmail, and was unable to do so (first time this has happened). However, the following error message appeared in the "gmail sign in" box, and I found it entertaining: Sorry, something didn't work correctly. If we knew exactly what the problem was, we would tell you instead of giving you this useless error message. Actually, if we knew, we would most likely have fixed it already. Rest assured. As you read this, alarm bells are ringing at the Googleplex, signifying something has gone horribly wrong in this quadrant. A report will soon be in the hands of our engineering team, detailing the bad thing that happened here. This team will work without rest to address the problem you have brought to their attention. If, after a decent interval (about 24 hours), you encounter this problem again, please email us at accounts-support@google.com . The more specifics you include, the better (e.g., what kind of computer and browser you were using, what page you looked at last, what you clicked on, etc.). Sometimes, even our engineers need a little help. Thanks for using Google.
  • I have just been the recipient of about 10,000 new gmail invites [more accurate number: 12] I realise the market is *totally* saturated now, but in the off chance that anyone who'd like one still doesn't have one (or two or three), email me (in the profile). and yes, it's as good as you've heard! Well, I like it at least.
  • I only received 5 new invitations. Ilyadeux must be cuter than me. I'll spare a couple if by some chance ilyadeux runs out (ha!). Addy's in the profile.
  • I only got two! And yes, email me etc.
  • Me have four.
  • Two here. Yada, yada, profile.
  • yeah, i've got a bunch, too
  • I've got 6. I guess no one wants them anymore. (Are you no one? Email me.)
  • I just got a bunch as well.
  • got a baker's half-dozen. Will send some tea with the invite if you include your snail mail addy :)
  • a baker's half-dozen You have six and a half?
  • Alnedra, are you trying to take over the world...with tea?
  • She's a drug baron, and its the most addictive tea known to man. She'll enslave us all yet
  • Curses, foiled again! *twiddles moustache*
  • i can't give these away to my offline friends. so i'll offer them to my online friends. 5 fresh gmails, send me an email... if you would be so kind, please think about including the phrase "O Most Wise and Benevolent Frogs, Giver of Gmail, Consider My Plea" when asking for my invites.
  • I say we just start an online dump for them. Wish I'd had mine when people were actually paying $100 for them...
  • I've got another 6 invites. E-mail in profile.
  • Me too. And me too. Is anyone actually getting emailed for their invites, though? I'm thinking it's a lost cause.
  • One person emailed me after seeing this thread. But the G-folks promptly replaced the invitation I sent out with another.
  • if anybody still needs gmail, I've got a few invites up for grabs. Dmail in my profile.
  • I think Mofites have reached the saturation point for Gmail addresses. But there are still people over at the gmail swap site who want some, if you have the time to post there.
  • Please. I want Gmail. :)
  • Sent.
  • Thank you Monkey Master.
  • I've got one left. Bleh.
  • Wow, I can't believe there is anyone left who would still want/need one, but I have extra invites, too. Just let me know.
  • I am the Monkey Master! Bow...ah, bugger it.
  • I have 11 invites between two email accounts.
  • Yeah make that 6, not 1. *suddenly, the special feeling wears off* *glances at tracicle* *feels special again*
  • I'd like a Gmail account please ta!
  • If there are any left I could sure use one
  • invites sent to both of ye. enjoy your gmailing.
  • I got two invites, thanks to ye both! Yarr.
  • So who wants an invite. First one gets it.
  • Got an invite to give away. Is it passe' yet? Drop me a line if you wannit.
  • Forks?!? It's been ages since we've been in the same thread.
  • I'm getting offline. So if anyone wants an invite just email me. Note: first one gets it.
  • I would love an invite. I've been at camp for several months, and out of the apparent 'Gmail giving spree.' I've got to catch up with the times! Also, if you've got extras just laying around, check out Gmail for troops. via wilwheaton.net
  • BevosAngryGhost, you got an invite coming your way.
  • Sullivan! Love the new haircut. How's the wife and lil' bastards?
  • Yay! You have made me a happy monkey...
  • I've become rich w/ invites. email in profile if you are in need.
  • Google is taking over the world, one invitation at a time.
  • I've a few invites to give now, as well. email in profile
  • Wow, Google must be having a hard time getting rid of these, they are overloading us with more invites everyday! So........add me (again) to the list of people with lot's of invites to hand out.
  • same here. email in profile, yadda yadda yadda.
  • I now (finally) have some invites (6) - and am returning them to the monkeyfold. If any monkey wants a gmail account, and doesn't have one, and hasn't emailed the 12 other people offering invites, then email me (conveniently enough, at my gmail account).
  • Would anyone have a gmail invite they could send me?
  • Lets start a pool to determine how many gmail invites Beeswacky receives. I'll say... 7.
  • Now I'm scared....
  • Now I'm scared....
  • I'll send him all 50 of mine, muwahaha!
  • Yikes! Helpohelpohelp!!!
  • I'll send 150 of mine!!!
  • *exits screaming*
  • I only have fifty to give.
  • 200...
  • Here I was wondering why this thread suddenly had 10 comments. Y'all here are terrorising poor bees! *waggle finger* You still want a gmail invite, bees? I've got, um, 150 I think.
  • I've got 49 available 'wacky. They're all yours if you want. We can call you 'wacky, can't we?
  • Actually these days you can go here and get an invite for free. They've got over 1 million donated now. I thought Gmail was going to go live in April? Seems like this invite business is pointless by now.
  • Gmailwacky.
  • *drowning!*
  • What the heck is Gmail? /moran
  • bashi@gmail.com turkmenbashi@gmail.com giantsloth@gmail.com wherethehellaremysocks@gmail.com monkeyfilter_whattheheckisGmail@gmail.com
  • hmmmmm, wonder if sushibashi@gmail.com is taken?
  • OK, so I went and found out what Gmail is (seriously, I didn't know); so now I want to ask, is anyone disturbed by this article?
  • sure. I have a gmail account. I just don't disclose what it is or ever use it.
  • Got one so I can subscribe to a couple of newsletters and not have 'em clutterting up other mailboxes.
  • Bees, that's exactly what I do with my library association newsletters! Except now I have 695 unread emails....
  • Gmail is kind of like the G-spot, but without the whole 'pleasure' thing.
  • I use it to back my stuff up for free.
  • Your G-spot?
  • I back my stuff up next to the G-spot.
  • Koko, I've always gone on the assumption that if they, meaning anyone, want to know, they can find out. AFAIAC, if it's on the computer, on the net, it can be found out. Any information that I put value into does not end up on the internet, nor does it go into any email. Anyone can find out my home address, real name, anything and Google won't be to blame.
  • This is true.
  • [this is in brackets]
  • THIS IS IN CAPS
  • I just want to say this.
  • Neti neti.
  • don't be nosy fish tick.
  • Don't try this @home, kids!
