Evidence for the decay of dark matter?
The Tevatron particle accelerator at Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois, has produced particles that the team was unable to explain by the known laws of physics: far more muons were created than were predicted from the collision of protons and anti-protons. More crucially, some of these muons seem to have been created OUTSIDE of the horizon of the metal beam pipe: leaving no trace inside.
As a possible explanation, Weiner and Nima Arkani-Hamed of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, and colleagues have developed a theory of dark matter that posits dark matter particles that interact among themselves by exchanging "force-carrying" particles with a mass of about 1 gigaelectronvolts. Moreover, the new CDF muons appear to have come from the decay of a particle with a mass of about 1 GeV. So was this a particle of dark matter?

Unofficial Official America 2008 Election Wrap-Up.
In a few hours, this interminable election will be over, and we can all go back to our regular lives, with late-nite talk show hosts joking only about Paris Hilton, SNL returning to its natural state of suck, and peace restored to the land. Or, in the alternative, whitey’s gonna steal the election and there’ll be all these race riots and stuff. Either way. Whatever. We need a place to discuss our last-minute wild predictions and baseless paranoid accusations, and this might as well be it. Happy Election Day, everybody! What a long, strange trip it's been, so far.

San Francisco has approved Proposition R to be on the ballot.
What's Proposition R? A move to change the name of the city's Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant to the George W Bush Sewage Plant. Reaction has been mixed, both from Bush supporters to supporters of the sewage plant. Come on, Bay monkeys -- vote early, vote often!

Laura Gainey report published.
The report into Laura Gainey's death is out. Laura was the daughter of hockey great Bob Gainey, a formerly-troubled woman who turned her life around, thanks in part to her time aboard the tall ship Picton Castle. In 2006, she was swept off deck, and lost at sea.

Forestry Commission scraps Magna Carta right to collect woods from forests.
The Forestry Commission of Great Britain is phasing out licences for people to gather firewood from the forests, an almost 800-year-old right which was established in 1217 in the Magna Carta's companion document, the Charter of the Forest (previously on MeFi). [Via]
