Kodak, Don't Take My Kodachrome
NY Times, reg. required.
Earlier this month, Kodak, based in Rochester, N.Y., delivered a shock to experimental, underground and just plain old-fashioned filmmakers when - one day after a May 8 celebration called Global Super 8 Day - it announced plans to discontinue its low-speed, fine-grained Kodachrome Super 8 film in favor of a new Ektachrome Super 8 product.

LA Meetup Featuring a22lamia at Casa de Calamari
It appears that a22lamia (who is visiting the big city after spending weeks staring at Joshua Trees in the Mojave desert) is going to come over to my house in West Hollywood for cocktails tonight. I've got the word out to Mandyman, but if any other LA monkeys want to show up, drop me a line at [email protected] and I will give you directions.
The poo will start flinging around 7:00pm. All other monkeys prepair for drunk posting.
PS- BYOBAS (Bring Your Own Bottle And Snax).

Lens five times thinner than paper developed
Scientists at Canada's Universite Laval have invented a lens that is five times thinner than a piece of paper and can zoom without using mechanical parts. The lens is created by adding a small quantity of photosensitive material to a liquid crystal cell. When a weak electrical current is applied, the crystals realign differently from those in the periphery and thus take on the shape and behavior of a lens.

Curious George - Music for a doc on women in the military
I am cutting a promotional video that will be used to sell and raise money for a documentary I am working on, the topic of which is women and their changing roles in the military. The primary focus of the doc will be the women of WWII with the formation of the WACs, WAVs, etc...
The music could be as specific as period recordings about women in the military, or as broad as a good patriotic march, period or modern. Also, this is not a pro-war doc, per se, but it is pro-military and looks at the military experience from feminist perspective.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

Curious George - So, what the hell happened?
All kinds of theories about the recent two day mofi "vacation" were discussed at Mandyman's meetup last Friday nite. So, what happened?

Curious George - Tiger, Mac's new operating system
So, is it worth shelling out $100? I know I am going to have to upgrade sooner as Final Cut Pro 5.0 will require the new operating system, but does it deserve all the hoopla?

Curious George - Cool, funky restaurants/dives in DC?
Hey Monkeys. I will be in Washington DC from the evening of the 18th to the evening of the 22nd. I'm not too hip on the city and what it has to offer and I was hoping that I could sample a couple of cool, inexpensive restaurants while I was there. We are going to be staying in Arlington, but will be traveling into DC each day for a documentary I am working on. Any suggestions?

Unknown Species of Dinosaur Found
From the article in the LA Times, registration required:
The scientists acknowledged that they owed the discovery to the troubled conscience of a man named Lawrence Walker, who found the creature while poaching fossils from federal lands, digging only at night hidden under a tarpaulin. He had sold several of the fossil fragments at mineral shows.

Curious George - Best iPod Hacks?
I did a search on this, but you have to wade through a bunch of webpages to get to the meat of what the hacks offer, and even then I'm not sure I even know what the hell they are talking about half the time.
The first thing I am looking for is a way to share the music I have on my iPod with my sister who just bought herself one without linking her to my computer's music library (she's in Palm Desert and my computer's in Los Angeles). There's got to be a way to get the music on my iPod onto her her iPod easily.
Do we have any iPod experts who can reccomend some cool software that will extend my iPod's capabilities? BTW, my home machine is a mac.
Thanx

Atomic Platters
I found this website rather randomly while searching for photos of a dead televangelist.
A collection of weird, cheesey, anti-communist songs and random right wing propaganda recordings. This one is a supposed recreation of what one would hear at a communist cell meeting.
There's lots more where that came from. The links above will take you to the webpages for each albums. Click on the links to hear real-audio files of the recordings.

Curious George - Digital Camera Buys?
Hi all. Can anyone here point me to a non-biased resource (web page or publication) that has well researched, up-to-date reviews of digital still cameras? I've been itching to buy something in the neighborhood of $400-$600 that would also allow me to have some substanital manual control and as well as easy point and click capabilities when I need them. Obviously, the higher the pixils and bigger the chip the better. And I don't need SLR, but if a cool one exists in my price range, I'd consider it.

What weird/stupid/silly stuff have you done?
Sometimes we all do things that we know are stupid, silly, dangerous or just plain weird.
Of the stupid/silly variety are me yelling "moooo!!" at cows when they and I are in the immediate vicinity of one another.
In the dangerous catagory, although I haven't done this in years, as a teenager I would close my eyes for 30 seconds while driving on the freeway at night.
In the weird/stupid was about a year after my divorce when I looked up a "spell" on the net and tried to get back at the ex-wife by witch craft.
So, give monkeys, what sort of goofy stuff have you done.

Most everyone who needs to know already does, but I thought I'd let it be known to the monkeysphere that yours truly, space kitty, PY, mandyman, sexyrobot, cellar floor and goofyfoot are (more than likely) gonna meetup at Casa de Calamari for a potluck and t shirt stuffing party this Wednesday night at 7:00pm. Write me at the email address in my profile if you are gonna be in LA and want to join us.

The T shirts are ready to ship
Hello monkeys! The long awaited t shirts have been printed and now I need LA monkeys to help. It shouldn't be too much of a pain if we all do it together. I'm taking a trip to Baja this weekend, but will be back next week. We can plan a mellow week night of envelope stuffing and addressing at my house. Any takers?

Auditory George - Easiest way of importing my old CDs?
Hello all!
After downloading most of my music, I finally took a look at the stack of my old CDs and sat down to try to import them into my iTunes. The problem seems to be that when I am importing them using iTunes, the importing gets hung up on what I suspect is a song that resides on a particularly scuffed up part of the CD and just sort of hangs there. Is there a better importing option for mac, preferablly for little or no $$$? Something that will let me stop a song import if it isn't working and skip to the next song without rebooting the program?
Thanks large!

Curious George - Exporting and Importing into Gmail
Hola Monos,
A friend of mine is finally getting off aol and onto gmail. She wants to export her contacts/address book from aol into a file that can be imported into gmail. AO-Hell will only export as a ldif file and gmail will only import from a cvs file. Any suggestions?
And on a related note, I would love to export my contact info from my gmail account so's I can have it for my other email accounts. Has anyone figured out a way to do that yet?

Curious George - All Monkeys Banded Together
Putting this whole t shirt thing together with Tracicle and Space Kitty got me thinking. The folks on this site tend to be like-minded, free thinking people. What if we used our numbers to do something for both ourselves, as well as the planet. Something besides t shirts and CD swaps...
I'm leaving the floor open to discussion on this. For one thing, we could open our homes to other monkeys when they travel in our cities. We could also see if there is a social movement that we could all get behind. Frankly, I really don't know what we could do, all I know is that we have a number of cool people that could all help each other, or do something together for the world.
Any ideas monkeys?
