Regicide.
On this day in 1649, the death warrant of Charles Stuart, King of England, Scotland and Ireland was served on a scaffold hastily erected in Whitehall. The event shook Europe and had profound constituional implications that were crucial in defining the polity of successive governments throughout the English-speaking world.
For some Charles was to become a martyr, others have remembered the event with less reverence.

Former Minister HIV positive
Chris Smith, the UK's Secretary of State for Culture from 1997 to 2001, and the country's first openly gay minister, tells the Sunday Times today that he has been HIV+ for seventeen years. It seems a very welcome openness, but how will it go down? What if it was a ex/minister from your country? Is it time for positive status to be, forgive me, rebranded?

The summer of 2004 has seen interesting discoveries in Canada and India that highlight a new branch of archæological research – archæoacoustics.
The Office
Here is the US version of the British comedy, The Office. I had high hopes for the US series, but this is just crap.

The Prokudin-Gorskii exhibit at the Library of Congress web site
shows a fascinating variety of color photographs of WWI-era Russia. Prokudin-Gorskii, the Tsar's photographer, took the photos on three glass plates to achieve the color effect, and the Library of Congress shows how the photos were digitally rendered from the glass plates.
