RateMyTeachers.com:
The most recent newsletter of the National Education Association [NEA, the nationwide teachers' union] had an article about this site, including the opinions of some outraged teachers who want to sue the site.
Actually, I think it's a good idea, and not only because my students like me.

Right Wing Bloggers On Kay Report
This is what happens when you let your political bias take the place of facts. Ditto to Michael Moore on the left.
Bill Gates attempts to save the world...again.
"...a "payment at risk" system...would mean the senders of e-mail would pay a fee if their mail was rejected as spam. The system would not deter genuine e-mailers, such as friends and relatives, who would be confident their mail would be accepted." [Via Neil Gaiman's blog]

The great escalator
Take a ride on the 800 meter long escalator that connects various Hong Kong shops. [Warning: 85 Mb Quicktime movie] The punchline can be found at 18 min 23 when a sign states filming is forbidden.
Clearly pimping something... but what?
I'm predicting Sprite. Is it my imagination or has teaser advertising gotten a big boost from the internet? Useless, obviously commercial crap like the above pops up and three weeks later we finally get a sponsor to match our "grass roots" character. Or am I just cranky?

"The Internet isn't good for that."
(NYT, reg req'd) "If I'm going to try to persuade someone, I'd save it for in-person." Quite relevant, on some abstract underlying level, to most any discussion on this board, imo. MoFi manages to avoid many of the pitfalls mentioned in this article, but we'd be kidding ourselves if we thought all views felt welcome to post here, or of course even that they read this page in the first place. Is there anything else we could be doing to broaden our perspectives?

The Wonderful World of Go.
Go is said to be the oldest board game still being played today. (It was born in China 3000 years ago.) The game is an elegant synthesis of attack and defense; wood and stone; thought and intuition. You can play online and the Net is full of vast resources to help new players.
Curious George :
I've been asked to host a quiz night at work. I've had a trawl through the net, starting at the usual place. Was wondering if any Monkeys had idea's for categories etc.
I guess you could call this a refreshing take on a topic not generally considered refreshing:
The Gas We Pass: The Story of Farts.
And its companion volume: Everybody Poops
The international version
And there are 70 reviews for the poopy book no less.
The Seamless City.
An artist takes a 30-mile walk through San Fransisco, taking photos as he goes and stitching them together to make a completely continuous portrait of his city. It's not complete yet, but there are some small samples that give you some idea of the mind-boggling scale of his undertaking.
Window-Shopping With The National Socialists.
IMPORTANT: Somewhat hinky link: Hit "Museum" button, then click on "Fashion", then scroll down to "Window Shopping". The entire site is fascinating; sort of a "'Swing Kids' Central" if all the kids hadn't been, you know, brutally murdered....
The Man's the Gowd:
Robert Burns Day: I'll be spending much of it with the Canongate Burns, a volume I've recently been savouring, its inclusion of many items not formerly attributed to Burns make it a fascinating read.
