SPLINK The film dates from 1976 and stars the late Jon Pertwee, then just two years after having left the role of Doctor Who. He is essentially playing the same part, though - a curious uncle figure who is explaining the world to his young charges. Unfortunately the message of this film seems so complicated one almost needs the Tardis's translation software to understand what he's going on about. {this is for all the Dr.Who fans}

Purple people. I don't know what it is about the color, but some people are passionate about it and let it dominate their lives. They are easy to pick out because they are the ones dressed head to toe in purple. They have entire stores dedicated to the lifestyle. They scare me. Can anyone explain to it to me? [If anyone out there is a purple person, I don't mean to offend you. Please just explain yourself.]

Curious Kids Entertainment As I've probably mentioned too often, I'm the proud father of a 20mo old boy. Thus far we have lived without a TV, and only recently have started renting DVDs to watch with him. Now I have a few questions for the monkeys: 1) What are recommended movies/DVD's for him to watch. He already loves Teletubbies and Sesame Street, both of which I don't mind watching myself. However, I refuse to watch Barney. What else should he see that won't drive Mom and Dad batty? 2) We are thinking of returning to TV-land. If we do get a TV, what are some good shows these days for children?

Self-medicating. For a sizable group of people in their 20's and 30's, deciding on their own what drugs to take - in particular, stimulants, antidepressants and other psychiatric medications - is becoming the norm. Confident of their abilities and often skeptical of psychiatrists' expertise, they choose to rely on their own research and each other's experience in treating problems like depression, fatigue, anxiety or a lack of concentration. A medical degree, in their view, is useful, but not essential, and certainly not sufficient. [NYTimes Link -- could require login, duh] more inside

The Top-10 Languages used on the Internet. The number of recorded internet users has reached the staggering figure of 812,931,592 worldwide. Leading in absolute terms, with more than 35% of total internet users, English is smashed by those 526,288,835 users that access internet in a different language. That figure is 84% for Japan, 82% for Brazil and Spain, 81% for Argentina and Peru and 79% for Germany. more inside

Researchers recover typed text using audio recording of keystrokes. "What makes the technique feasible is that each keystroke makes a relatively distinct sound, however subtle, when hit. Typical users type about 300 characters per minute, leaving enough time for a computer to isolate the sounds of individual keystrokes and categorize the letters based upon the statistical characteristics of English text." more inside
