Belgians
have marched to try to prevent Belgium being erased from the map.
Political stalemate for the last few months has grown gradually worse and led to increasingly serious discussion of a break-up of the country.

Claus Von Stauffenberg,
the man who nearly killed Hitler, is 100 today. With nearly perfect timing, Tom Cruise is to star as Von Stauffenberg in Valkyrie, er, next year.
Stauffenberg's son is not pleased.

Ritalin
and other drugs used to treat ADHD work in the short term, but after a year or two they cease to have any beneficial effect. They may, however, stunt the growth of children when used long-term. New research is to be reported on the BBC Panorama programme at 8.30 GMT today - some time after that, you'll be able to watch the whole programme online here.

The Chairman Smiles
is a nice selection of Soviet, Chinese, and Cuban posters from the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam. If that merely whets your appetite there are many more from Cuba and elsewhere here, and by way of a bonus, Spanish Civil War posters here.

Best Latin
has some nice resources, including the excellent Audio Latin Proverbs and the strangely pointless Roman Sudoku. They haven't got news in Latin, but you can get that here, here, or (monthly rather than daily) here.

GI Jonny,
a series of videos on the BBC with accompanying website, is intended to raise awareness of HIV. The first, for example, sees action-figure G.I. Jonny using his 'protector shield' to deflect the foam from Captain Bareback's crotch cannon, laying his foe low with his powerful fisting action, and spying the Commando Bandits through his magic brass eye.
This has raised a furore - perhaps not altogether unintentionally?

Bathing Beauties
has run a design competition to re-imagine the beach hut. Nine winners will be available for hire. (Alas, I don't think the winners are necessarily the best designs, apart from 'Jabba').

Padlocks
attached to a lamp post on the Milvian bridge have become a popular love token for Romans. The custom, possibly originating in Florence, has grown rapidly following a film of this book, which features it. The mayor is not amused. There is a Valentine's Day prize, presented on the bridge, for the best amorous text or email.

Drastic culling
of badgers (to the point of extinction in places) has not reduced Bovine TB in Ireland, according to a report published by Badger Watch Ireland and the Badger Trust. (full version - pdf) The NFU favours a targeted cull in the UK and there are signs that it will soon get its way, although there are good reasons to think a selective cull does more harm than good.
