A Good News Day for Scott Adams The creator of Dilbert lost he voice 18 months ago due to Spasmodic Dysphonia. There is no cure. Yet he has managed to work out how to speak again.

Whether you like Dilbert or not this is a pretty remarkable story.

  • Amazing. Wow.
  • That's very cool.
  • Super-interesting, thanks for the link.
  • So poetry actually has a purpose. Huh. Guess I better pick up that hefty tome of poetry by Turkmenbacy.
  • Fascinating and immensely cheering. Thanks for the link, gomi!
  • Hope the poor fellow continues to improve.
  • Despite what I read I still think it's a hoax. Sorry.
  • National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association. Spasmodic dysphonia at American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Spasmodic dysphonia at Fauquier ENT page (with audio samples in Quicktime). Spasmodic dysphonia at NIDCD. Spasmodic dysphonia at Wikipedia. It has a mention in DSM IV, which isn't online, but I have it right here. Appears to be a perfectly real condition with faultless medical references. If Adams is hoaxing his complaint, where is the evidence? Why would he claim such a thing?
  • Hoax? Do you think he didn't get Spasmodic Dysphonia and has been faking it? or that he did lose his voice, and has been faking an ability to talk? or that Spasmodic Dysphonia is not a real condition, just one faked by the international community?
  • Yeah Chy, I'm just as confused by that hoax suggestion as you are. WTH is he trying to suggest?
  • That's one of the most interesting things I've read in a long time! The brain is such a fascinating organ.
  • A glance through Bobby Turner's posting history explains his comment. He's not trying to say anything of import, he's just trying to be a stupid dick. And each time there's generally appears to be a cubic fuck-ton of people asking him why he's bothering to speak?
  • Is there a germ or something one can use to infect people? My wife has an annoying compulsion to talk at me.
  • *ignores the irritating lint upthread* Great post gomi! Informative, and encouraging... Just plain goodness!
  • Great story. Brains is so neat!
  • Poetry or singing also helps stutterers to enunciate clearly.
  • Hail, Poetry! Thou heav'n-born lady! Thou curest even the stutterer's malady. Hail, flowing fount of elocution, All hail! All hail, the stammerer's solution!
  • I don't think we need Bobby Turner around here.
  • Don't know about Adams, but, Michael J. Fox? Now he's a faker! Rush says so!
  • Wow. What an INTERCONTINENTAL BALISTIC ASSHOLE TM Just -- wow.
  • INCONTINENT BALL-LICKING ASSHOLE®? You bet!
  • somebody should horsewhip limbaugh. nasty scumbag.
  • Heh. At first glance, I thought you said, "somebody should worship limbaugh." Reading is fundamental.
  • *stands, applauds Mr. Tricycle for yet another wise decision.*
  • Why would Bobby Turner post only six comments in a year and a half and all of them are so hostile? I mean, if it is fun for him to do, why not do it more often? If it is not fun, then why continue to come back a year and a half later?
  • It's the IgnorantSlut Phenomenon, wingnut. I think it must be the approaching All Hallows Eve.
  • Do these unprecedented recoveries ever happen to normal people or is it usually just people in the public eye like Reeve and Adams? I'm not trying to be a Bobby Turner, I'm just saying... ...oh, shit. Does this mean Adams is going to die shortly? I normally would cheer a declining population of cartoonists - but that's in regard to career decisions, people! He must be warned. Justice Team, assemble!
  • No I think we just hear about them because they are already in the spotlight. I don't recall Reeves recovering though....
  • *sends love to Mr Turner*
  • InsolentChimp, there was a woman in NZ last year, an ordinary middle-aged woman called Willie Terpstra who had motor neurone disease and was losing her speech. She was in the news because she went to China to get stem-cell therapy, and for a few amazing weeks she really did seem better. But then everything went back to how it was, and the disease progresses.
  • I dig, gomichild, I just think it's interesting that some, like Reeves (he regained some motor control in a finger and some non-phantom limb sensation in his extremities before he died) and Adams become the water cooler topics and when it comes to Pat Rummerfield and, as tracicle pointed out, Wille Terpstra people are generally, "cool. You see Lost last night?" or interested just enough to raise their eyebrows in that almost fake expression of caring about the topic. Maybe I just know a lot of superficial people. Or maybe everyone is just raising their eyebrows just enough at all of this. Maybe I shouldn't be touching this with a forty foot pole. tracicle, I don't know enough about the stem-cell research, but does the therapy only have short term results? I wonder if stem-cell therapy is like neurological botox.
  • I don't know much about it either, and at first I wondered if her rapid improvement was psychological rather than physical, as she and her family were so desperate for it to work.
