I'm so glad that you posted this because I've actually been thinking about this. I recently went to a new gyn for my yearly appointment and we went over everything, and I explained that I had been married for over 6 years, we're not planning to have kids, and I'd never tried the pill because I have migraines. Well, she told me that I absolutely shouldn't have the pill, and that an IUD would be a much better long term solution (and cheaper than condoms.) She did not have a problem at all with the fact that I don't have children.
I'm not that involved with the IT decisions made around here, but for up-time, we've had fabulous luck with rackspace. Even when we switched servers, we've never had any downtime.
Unfortunately, though, I think we might have a dedicated server, not colocation, so it might not be what you're looking for.
Interestingly enough, a friend of ours wants to do more research on this. He's a very well respected (if not a little crazy) physicist. If you google "DickEffect" (no, I'm not joking, and yes, that's HILARIOUS), you can find some of the work he did at JPL.
Anyhow, he feels it has to do with timing, not telepathy. I can't say that I completely understand it, but he wants to do this experiment on a MUCH bigger scale. So, yes, there is some scholorly research going on with this. I'll ask him about it next time we talk.
Eeeeeeeeeeee!!! Happy Birthday, sexyrobot! Wish we could make it to the BBQ, but hey, we could always have dim sum gathering in a few weeks. It will be later in the morning, I swear!
Mothninja, you rock. Thanks so much. I was at work, and I try to keep my browsing to an minimum (ahem) and if I go to wikipedia, I'll be on there for at least an hour!
From the list of top 10 things that blind people don't care about, they mentioned something called Ceefax. Seeing as how I'm superbly lazy and can't be bothered to do anything for myself, would someone be so kind as to enlighten me? What the heck is a Ceefax?
HuronBob, congratulations! You've won the Golden Bacon Meritous Service Award! Next time you're in LA (provided you're a carnivore) I shall bestow upon you a gift of fatty breakfast meat rendered into the most beautiful sandwich creation on this earth: the BLAT. Some might argue that it's simply a BLT with avocado, but I'd like to think that the addition of the avocado elevates the sandwich to a new level. Mmmm... bacon...
Slight threadjack, but this reminds me of a Straight Dope message board thread I was looking at a few days ago. Someone wrote:
At my local taco bell, there is an electric hand dryer in the bathroom with an illustration showing how to use the dryer. The warm air is depicted in the picture as red, wavy lines coming out of the dryer into the person's hands. Underneath this someone has written "Press button, receive bacon."
Now that's comedy!
Oh, I'd forgotten all about the Mars Trilogy! I loved that, but I read it AGES ago. I really liked Gold Coast (the California Series) books too. I'm thinking that my Amazon wishlist is going to have some new additions soon.
You mean, I'm only allowed to have one?! Ha, ain't gonna happen. I do like Enders Game and Dune, but I really loved the Foundation Series (except for the gawdawful one by Benford). If you're just talking about one book, I guess I'd say Einstein's Dreams. Really interesting though provoking and dreamy all at the same time.
Have Dim Sum at the Empress Pavillion in Chinatown. I know you said not too touristy (and chinatown is definitely touristy), but it's the best dim sum to be had in Los Angeles, and cheap to boot! Even if you eat until you can't button your pants, you still won't pay more than $10 per person. I also completely agree with doing people watching in Venice, but be prepared to shell out a lot for parking.
Also, if there's an event at the Hollywood Bowl, and you've never been to a concert there, there's nothing like it. Try to get the $1 seats and pack a picnic if you can.
Wish I could make it, Space Kitty, but the drive from BFE to downtown is a drag. Actually, that's not too bad, it's the drive back to BFE and not being able to drink much because of said drive is the true drag.
caution live frogsNot being able to set a keyboard shortcut for "paste what is on the clipboard without formatting" however is making me go cross-eyed.
You actually can do that. Record it as a macro, then assign it as a keyboard shortcut. Email me if you want more step-by-step instructions.
Out here in So Cali, it's the folks from the 909 (area code). (razza frazza next city over is 626, and we're 909... grumble grumble)
