are you sure it's eye-sof and not ell-sof? lsof is a command that lists files opened by processes on your computer. can't imagine that it'd be taking up much CPU time though, as it works like ls - when it's done, it quits. unless a scheduled task is using it or I missed something when I scanned the man page.
if you can try MacJanitor - OS X is a Unix, and it can generate a ton of log files (esp. if you've attached something with some flaky drivers - have heard of some problems with game pads and whatnot). there are scheduled tasks that usually clean up, but unless you leave your system on all the time they typically don't get run. MacJanitor will run them for you. some of those tasks clean up /tmp and archive log files, which can free up some disk space.
there's always final cut express, which sits inbetween.. iMovie does a ton of stuff but it is pretty much "look at my home video!" type stuff (albeit not cheesy).
iLife comes with excellent software for all of those uses. Unless you're really serious about doing it, in which case most of the pro apps run on Mac. And, you get 'em (iMovie, iPhoto, iDVD, and GarageBand) for $1299 (for the 17" iMac G5 1.8). Go try 'em out, or if you're near an Apple Store, go for the free training on those apps. Other than that, I'd go AMD just cuz the CPUs are a lot cheaper once you get into the higher speeds.
well, that's awesome.. I didn't even realize the treo didn't support the SD wifi card. glad to see there's a hack though :) fwiw, sandisk and socket make similar cards (sandisk's cards even have storage built in) but I think they only support Pocket PCs, which is lame.
FWIW it'll probably be easier to just get the palmOne SD wifi card, as bluetooth has very limited range and is very slow. quite a bit more expensive, though.
there are bluetooth to ethernet bridges that are available (as tracicle pointed out) - just grab one and set it up. you may be able to get one off eBay for cheap. unless you're on a Mac I would recommend that over like a D-Link USB BT adapter, since bluetooth on windows (unless you just want to use a keyboard and mouse, and even then it's not much better) is an exercise in stupidity, IMHO. a dedicated device will most likely lead to success whereas trying to get BT working on Windows will probably lead to you buying a Secure Digital 802.11b WiFi card.
FWIW, some of the TiddlyWiki adaptations do add a server-side component - you'd have to put it on a server that supports passwording directories (I'd imagine most do, it's not difficult or non-standard or anything) and have PHP/MySQL set up but outside that it works just like a TiddlyWiki.
I'd suggest the card reader.. using the USB connection on your camera will probably drain the batteries (cameras tend not to use the power the USB port provides) and I've killed my previous cams a few times by forgetting to turn them off after getting off pics..
if they're really scuffed you might take them somewhere for resurfacing (some game trady shops will do it - a friend works in a hollywood video/gamecrazy and they resurface for a small fee). you might try music man for ripping but I can't vouch for it.. do they play properly in a reg. CD player?
iTunes can skip, just cancel it when you get to a bad song and select the rest of the tracks and then hit import.
problem with jumping on the iPod is that it has absolutely no bearing on ripping CDs with iTunes, at least as far as this post is concerned.
if the G4 is not the first-gen PCI Graphics G4 (the one that's really just the B&W G3 motherboard w/ a G4 on it) then a PSU from a B&W G3 won't work.. the PSU provides some extra power on "Gigabit Ethernet" (everything after) models. however, there were like 4-5 different graphite G4 models inbetween the PCI Graphics and the Quicksilver (much lighter silvery grey) models.
The power manager reset button is on the inside of the machine, on the motherboard (it's the only button on the board). Do not have the machine plugged into anything when you reset it. (Some suggest removing the PRAM battery as well.)
When it makes noise, does the air output change? Fans do die, and I've had some start rattling and whirring and stuff before they finally gave up the ghost. Your MP3 definiately souns like the fan is dying. They can be replaced fairly easy if you can work a soldering iron - just unplug and remove the PSU from the machine, leave it sit for a day or two, and open it up and replace the fan. You should be able to find an exact replacement on the internets somewhere(try mouser or others, or Radioshack). The last time I had to do it I just snipped the wires to the fan in th emiddle and grafted the new fan on suchly. If you opt to do the fan replacement and can't find a suitable fan, let me know (email in profile) and I can shoot you a fan. I have a grey G4 that has a completely dead PSU but the fan's ok.
We Love Macs will sell you an Apple replacement PSU for your machine. It will be very expensive. You can also use an ATX power supply but you have to do a lot more work - ATX pinout is different and Macs require a +28V line and there's lots of wiring and stuff but it can be done.
I can't see the battery being much of a problem on these things.. if you use it more than about a year or so the flash will wear out anyway. I've seen plenty of USB flash drives go bad just from use.
You won't be able to do that. The software in the router is set up to be an access point and what you're wanting to do is set up a bridge. That said, there are wireless bridges... you can hook the cantenna into that and then use it to provide network connectivity to your network (hook it to the WAN port on your router). You'll lose the ability to share your cable modem out with the wireless router (unless you plug it back in to the d-link unit) and you'll be at the mercy of whoever's signal you're lifting... now, if you just wanna increase signal strength to your laptop, the best thing is to get an external antenna and a card that supports it.
could you maybe bring your laptop in, hook it up to the player and then record it thusly? you might have some luck googling for the company and "dmx" although there was a music-over-cable service called "DMX" as well. (also, lots of people use Muzak as a generic phrase, which doesn't help with the whole finding Muzak player dealies.)
you can rip to ISO by using a CD burning program (Nero or Easy CD Creator - look for a Save Track option, in Nero it's in Disc Properties under Tools I believe and in the other, it's in there somewhere :-). if you have Windows XP, you can use the ISO Recorder PowerToy to do it (install, then right-click on the CD in My Computer). on Macs, use Toast or something suchly.
(derailish) I think jewelers don't like used stuff is cuz they can't resell it as easily.. especially like wedding bands and stuff that come out of a divorce; why would someone want to buy a symbol of a failed marriage? (not trying to be mean but..) but then, the jeweler could just melt the thing down.
