The definitive primer for laying out a document based on a grid: Grid Systems in Graphic Design It may seem a bit dense, but it will show you how to structure a page, and also a longer document like a magazine, very clearly. If you are doing this magazine more than once, buy it and study it. This is a great resource that I still use today. Pricey, but worth every penny!

In "The Grateful, and Sexy Dead"

Grace Kelly! Sorry to be crude, but I'd give a testicle... She's the justification for the existence of stardom. The slow motion scene in Rear Window, when she leans over and kisses Jimmy Stewart, just absolutely kills me.

In "Curious George "

I tracked down a thread on it @ Chowhound.

Chowhound is an independent, well read web forum for foodies. You might even find people there who had the same experience. You could also lambast them on Citysearch, but I don't know anyone who takes their user reviews seriously. If the food is that crappy though, I can't imagine they will stay in business much longer...

In "Not only a lovely name but lovely tunes to boot."

oops! Morr Music is the label.

OOH, bought this last week. Have been a big Lali Puna fan for a while now. Was a bit dissapointed in Faking the Books, cause the Left-Handed single was quite incredible, and I was expecting more of the same. But if you like Lali Puna, you should definitely check out their labelmates Ms. John Soda. I think they are a tighter band. Morr Music is the label.

In "Curious George Goes To The Movies!"

I'm gonna go highbrow to lowbrow on this one: 1> Apocalypse Now_The scene when Chef stumbles onto a tiger when he's wandering in the jungle, runs back onto the boat and absolutely flips out–and the Willard voiceover says "Never get out of the boat. Absolutely goddamn right...Kurtz got off the boat". Thats scene put ME on the boat. IMHO, best movie ever made...with extreme prejudice. 2> Stalker_Andrei Tarkovsky_This is the scifi that I love. I'd put Solaris here too, but if I have to pick one it would be Stalker. No special effects really. His camerawork, his characters/dialogue, and his sound immerse you in his world more than any effect ever could. He is one of the few who really deserves to be a called a cinematic genius. Once you get into him, you will see his influence everywhere. Can't do it justice in a few sentences, but for background check this site. 3> Jackass: The Movie_No movie has ever made me laugh harder, ever. The shot of Bam's father's bedroom window flashing with firecracker explosions in the middle of the night, followed by the same thing done to his van the next morning just made me lose my mind.

In "Curious George: Now!!"

These pretzels are making me THIRSTY!

In "Curious, George: Sex and Music"

DJ Assault (MP3 file) seems to create the right mood for seduction...

In "Beating the file-sharers at their own game"

BBF, I remember that the Liars site had the mp3s. In fact I downloaded a few, and meant to go back and get the rest, but now it appears to be too late. Maybe the record company flipped out... I don't think it is very smart to put the whole album out there on MP3. That would leave zero incentive to go out and buy the CD. But its nice when they put up 3 or 4 tracks, some remixes, to whet the appetite. And streaming the whole thing is nice as well. God forbid a band should be judged on the quality of its music...

In "Curious George: Batch Processes in Photoshop"

Did you select 'save and close' from the 'destination' section of the batch window? Run a test on a smaller set first, but it should work...haven't run batches in a while, but I don't remember having this problem.

In "Byzantium: Faith and Power."

This collection does look incredible. I'm going to get off my butt and take the train for 5 min. and go see it. When you've lived in NY your whole life, you always take these things for granted. Never go to the MET on a weekend BTW–the crowds will kill ya...maliciously.

In "Curious, George: Any fellow primates freelancing"

See folks? Networking in action!

I heartily second what Daniel says (I would expect no less from a fellow Stuyvesant graduate!) except for the "freelancing sucks" part. I agree that your time would be better spent trying to build personal relationships within your industry. Freelancing is an excellent way to do this. In my experience, if you do quality work and people enjoy working with you, they are going to think of you when that next big project rolls around. And it snowballs from there...the only hard part is getting in the door! I just don't see how the elance jobs, while they may make you some cash, do much for your career in the longer term.

In "You have disgraced"

For a real intimate account of the act, a moving (and visceral) read is Yukio Mishima's short story Patriotism. (Mishima, if you didn't know, also committed seppuku)

In "Curious, George; Where are we?"

Was born in Brooklyn, NY, live in Manhattan now. But i'll be back in Brooklyn as soon as this lease is over. Can't stand the honking!

In "Ishkur's amazing electronic music guide."

Wow, cellar, this is great. Some classics I haven't heard in a while, some that I missed on the way. However, he did forget about "ambitechoracitrancillminalism". Also, if you want to drive enemy combatants from their hiding places, the "Happy Hardcore" samples sound like they would be quite effective.

In "PMF."

When I am on my deathbed, this will be one of the things that flash before my eyes...

In "jimmy McGrath, Photographer."

No way a busy art director would sit through that. Better portfolio piece for the flash designers than the photographer, IMHO.

In "The Biggest Suckers of 2003"

Ichi the Killer, what a f-ed up film. My friend took me to see it without telling me anything about it. Thought it was going to be your typical yakuza film, but boy WAS I WRONG!!! Same friend bought me the 2 DVD special edition for xmas, cause for some reason I actually liked it. (It also has maybe the greatest opening title sequence ever) Miike makes some very interesting films, especially if you want to find out how strong your stomach is. Audition might be a good one to start on.
