I normally post under small-e "ernie" or "psylux" depending on whats available. I used to consider BoingBoing my HQ until the trolls brought down QT and since then I've puttered around Kottke and the BB Tribe. I *used* to be on FileP*** also until AndreT mysteriously unplugged my login for reasons I can't get fathom but probably inactivity (He wont reply to emails either *sniff*).
I've been a long time MeFi listener, now a newbie MoFi caller and I'm quite pleased with the setup here so far. I may try for a MeFi login, but it'd be more for the cookie since its not as crowded here and there is a good mix of the kinds of primates that make me want to walk upright and peer across the savanna, relieving my aching knuckles from all the draggin' and such.
Set and setting is the key. But I wonder if there is only a finite number of times a person can take it and enjoy it. While there was nothing better than dropping then tooling around Austin (esp Eeyor's birthday) in the early 90's, there was eventually a time where it felt like being locked in a cinema playing a movie you've seen a hundred times. "Look kids, Big Ben - Parliament!".
That said, I really hope it does make a comeback in a decade or so. Done 'correctly' in the right place with the right music and people, it can be an incredible debugger/dissasembler for the operating system of your habits and perceptions, and I dare say I'm literally a better person for having taken it back then.
Ah, the ol' stack of barely explained links.
But whats more painful about http://masochist.com, the midi file or the navigation? They both make me want to run a Wartenberg Pinwheel over my eyes.
In a month, thats 600 newbies, all raring to post. I wonder how bitter the MeFiers will get by then. It seems like part of the 'charm' of the place is the familiar characters, everyone knowing each other's quirks and sharing inside jokes.
All that chatty new blood is going to make anyone with an ID over 17000 persona non grata - just watch.
Nope, those things sucked.
Did some D&D and Car Wars ones, and there was no real logic to them, there was no set of core motivations or behavior that led to victory. It seemed like you won or lost at random and the only way to get through and feel like they weren't a waste of the time already spent in them was to jam your fingers in the pages as you describe. Yay fun.
This has been a tough bitch of a week for me, so Im losing myself in the ambient bliss of dreamy synth pads:
James Plotkin/Mark Spybey - "A Peripheral Blur"
Transient Waves - "Sonic Narcotic"
Jochem Paap - "vrs-mbnt-pcs 9598 II"
Labradford - "A Stable Reference"
Biosphere - "Cirque" and "Substrata"
Arovane - "fwd 9901 12"
Steve Roach - "Quiet Music: Complete Edition"
I didnt link them but all the info is here

Always reminds me of Tom the Dancing Bug's Invisible Hand cartoons. Can't find the earlier one where the hand pushes people down. Hi-Larious!

And with that, Wedge's chances at getting confirmed for MeFi membership evaporated away.

My roommate in college used to make these all the time, but I'm not so sure his version had anything to do with hiding valuables of any kind.
