1) Catch 22 - Joseph Heller
My candidate for the Great American Novel.
2) Neighbors - Thomas Berger
Buy the book. Avoid renting the movie. Trust me.
3) A Confederacy of Dunces - John Kennedy Toole
Walker Percy called this book a "gargantuan tumultuous human tragicomedy", and, for lack of a better description, I'll go along with him.
