Man, I've been *looking* for a thread like this. Finally! Worlord, I completely agree.
"The third issue is that I can’t post this, or a comment like this, to MeFi itself. And in the past, I’ve wanted to comment on so many things, so many times, that reading conversations on MeFi is becoming little more than an exercise in frustration."
I can't tell you how many times I've been frustrated by that. I don't care if I'm *&%$* "elite", I just want to comment now and again. I've seen some of the new user threads like you mentioned, and it's a bit odd. There really is an undercurrent of "...but that would let the *commoners* in!" to everything. Maybe it's just me, though. It feels more like "we don't want anyone else" than "our server can't handle the load, no matter what the real cause.
And, of course, MeFi's not my baby, so really Matt could just take his toys and go home. Obviously there's no obligation on his part to make me feel welcome. You'd think, though, that that would be a goal. I dunno.
I do tend to read MetaFilter more often, because I find it (and Ask MetaFilter) more interesting, usually. I suspect it's just because I'm not looking here hard enough, as there's certainly plenty of interesting people.
"Systems Engineer," which really means I do test writeup/support, software development and installation, and some network/systems administration. Basically, whatever my company can get paid by the military to have me do. This has unfortunately not been particularly exciting, but I am still employed (so far--it's been looking rather slim lately). I'll probably end up posting another Curious thread about the whole "what do I want to do next?" overdone jobseeking question.
OK, here's a topic I can really get into (ahem).
Kids do definitely put a damper on things. There are other problems, though. Unfortunately, my wife is a really light sleeper, while I am a restless, but heavy sleeper. The result? If we're in the same bed sleeping, I'm the only one who gets sleep. If any of you have a solution, I'm all ears. Currently, I usually just sleep on the couch. I can sleep almost anywhere, but one of the reasons I got married, sorta, is to wake up next to someone, y'know?
...and a shoutout to Ambrosia for the invite. Thanks!
