My introduction to Trappist ale was in college; I was tutoring music at my college, and one of the students I was working with (an older guy who was returning to college after a lengthy hiatus) gave me a six-pack (is that the right way to refer to it? Not a beer snob, and haven't drunk nearly enough of the Trappist brew) at the end of the semester. I was 19 or 20, and that experience ruined shitty beer for me forever.
One of my students, upon seeing my newly-pierced earlobe today (I take my eyebrow ring out at work and my elementary school students never see it) said, "Mr. R., all of the kids are saying that you pierced your ear because you want to be a hippie."
I thought, but didn't tell her, "There are a lot of things that make me kind of a hippie, and this is among the least of them."
75%, and that's as a trained professional musician with perfect pitch. The synthesized tones threw me off... for me (and most people, I suspect) pitch perception is wedded to timbre, and I found myself thrown off whenever some bizarrely-overtoned electronic bullshit was played.
The Beatles were more like Beethoven. Well-defined and recognizable early, middle and late periods, where the early years were spent writing music that was similar to everything else around them in the music world (albeit very well-constructed), and the later years were spent innovating and creating music that broke the rules.
I just pullled out the score for An die ferne Geliebte for the first time in a while. What a great piece of music!
I'm a fan of the Mass in C. It's underperformed and underrated, but there are moments of brilliance in there.
I did An die ferne Geliebte in college as well. It's the first song cycle, and a brilliant one at that.
And the final movement of the Choral Symphony may just be the perfect piece of music.
In any case, my argument doesn't say that there are no decent women comedians. There are more terrible female comedians than there are terrible male comedians, but there are some impressive ladies out there. Most of them, though, when you come to review the situation, are hefty or dykey or Jewish, or some combo of the three.
Classy!
I caught an interview with Hitchens on NPR recently... he and the interviewer were talking about James Bond movies, and Hitch was going on at length about how to recognize a good martini. He sounded very authoritative and in his element, but seeing as how he's a big alcoholic I would have expected no less.
That thread is pretty interesting. I thought this comment was a gem:
You know, this is really very shallow. You are pissing and moaning about a bunch of video games in a country where women enjoy more freedom than you can imagine- my girlfriend is peruvian and she does not even begin to understand the freedom that she will have in this country.
In other countries, rape is encouraged, women have their genitals mutilated at any age and it is common place- downright strange if it does not take place.
American men are treated like dirt now- the first people blamed for this display were male marketing experts. When I was growing up in school, the first thing that the practically all female staff told me was that I should be afraid of all other men. If you are so up in arms about a damn video game display, there are places to go where there aren't video games at all... after all, we all know that American men are brainwashed by video games to spend all day abusing women and killing things... countries without video games must be a lot safer for women to be in.
