LA Monkeys, Assemble!
We talked about this before, now let's make it happen sometime soon. Let's have ourselves a good old fashioned meetup at some place with a cheap happy hour.
It will be rad, yo.

Some suggestions. Hamburger Mary's in West Hollywood. A mix of gay and straight in the heart of WeHo. The drinks are average price but they pour them STIFF. I ordered a double and they gave me a pint glass full of scotch. Coles Sandwiches downtown LA. Coles has an argument with Phillipes as to who invented the french dip sandwich, but they also have one of the oldest bars in LA. It's funky with an interesting clientele that includes locals, artists, cops and Japanese tourists. The Smog Cutter East Hollywood. A fun dive, a bit too hip nowadays, but fun. Jumbo's Clown Room East Hollywood. A strip bar on Sunset across the street from one of the best Thai restaurants in LA (Sanamalang). The girls tend to be on the natural side (i.e. less silicone than flashier joints on the West side) and there is an almost familial quality to the place due to the protective owner who's there most every night. I'll think of more and post later.
I mentioned this before, but I had a fun happy hour with classmates at Zip Fusion Sushi on Sawtelle. Their menu is limited, though--beer or soju-based fruity drinkes. Appetizers and drinks are half-price, but the sushi isn't. It also has karaoke rooms. My former roommate Aaron used to speak highly of a Japanese place near Westside Pavillion (I know where it is, just can't remember the name) that had 99 cent Kirin Ichibans and some half-priced sushi (not the whole menu). Hamburger Mary's is a sentimental favorite for being the place where Space Kitty managed to offend a drag queen...
Hell yeah. I have some serious love for the Hamburger Mary's chain (never been to the WeHo one though, just Fort Lauderdale and San Diego), but I'm more interested in checking out Zip Fusion this time around. I could probably have my arm twisted into visiting Jumbo's Clown Room, although I dunno how that will sit with most of MoFiLA... squidranch and I may have to do our own alcoholic expedition over there another time.
that being said, shoutouts from a strip club could get pretty interesting.
I just talked with Space Kitty a little while ago, and she's down with sushi. Now, how about figuring out the "when?" Can people do Friday? I'm free after 3:30 that day, and I know Space Kitty is free mid-afternoon.
Friday sounds fantastic! The sooner I get to drinking, the better. I'm done with class at 3, so anytime after that is cool. If we wanted to, we could always adjourn to my quarters for further happy houring--I'm not too far from Zip.
You guys completely forgot about El Torrito. Super cheap margaritas, great service, yummy appetizers. There's one at Bundy and Ocean Park. Best. Happy Hour. Ever.
Ooh, please tell the Space Kitty drag queen story!
Evidence can be found
mandyman: The Space Kitty drag queen story isn't in that thread. I'm sure either she or squid will tell it here, though. Kimberly: I have heard many tales of El Torrito fun (it is indeed a mighty happy hour), and it's on my list of places to visit very soon. It lacks karaoke though, and is insufficient for my purposes. I had a huge vocal health scare recently (who knew "arthritis of the arytenoids" was even
?) and now that the worst seems to be over I'm looking forward to blowing out my voice again sining Dead Milkmen songs.
Ok, so I was trying to be lazy with the link. It was her taking off of her shirt at Hamburger Mary's that did it. Or maybe the fact that she ran around briefly after doing so and before putting on the free t-shirt we were all given. The drag queen was the hostess and she declared that it was
mardi gras or something like that.
Um, delete that "of" in the second sentence. Oopsy.
I cannot *believe* that a strip joint was suggested as an appropriate monkey meetup venue. Gack. *brandishes tentacle snipper*
Every day is Mardi Gras when there's a MoFi meetup.
I can attest to the fact that El Torito had karao-ke on Cinco De Mayo (or Tres de Mayo if el cinco is on el Monday). And that strip clubs in LA have tvs showing hardcore porn.
Schtick, Jumbo's is not your usual strip joint, and I would venture to guess that LA monkeys aren't as thin skinned or politically correct as you are, otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned it.
Tin Roof!! Rusted!!!
Bwa-ha-ha-ha!!! El Calimari calling the tick thin-skinned! Hoo-HAW! :D
Hope y'all enjoy this noble admiration, yea
, even, of the female of the species!
I'd just like to say the collective good times referenced in this thread just made me
the bone right out of the computer room. I'll sit here and wait for the taglines to commence.
Ok shtick, you're empowered. You can be the PC police. But do it at your own meetups, ok?
*wonders how many pasties arachnids wear*
Hey, I can make it if any MoFites will still be hanging out around 6-6:30pm. My vote (weight accordingly given my time constraints) is for Coles or Zip's because they sound like they have decent snacks/food. I would suggest a meeting spot featuring male
but a quick search revealed maybe one place in town, and the boys did not seem on the natural side.
Monkeyfilter: It will be rad, yo. Monkeyfilter: The girls tend to be on the natural side Monkeyfilter: The drag queen was the hostess Monkeyfilter: this noble admiration, yea empowerment, even, of the female Monkeyfilter: the collective good times referenced in this thread just made me
I think some arachnids can weave their own pasties, thus doing away with the need to keep any certain number in stock.
doesn't open until 5 and happy hour goes until 7--is that going to be a problem?
If we're talking about Friday, then no, not for me. Zip's
location looks nice by the way, though I realize you are proposing the meetup for the westside one on Sawtelle. Thanks, mandyman!
No problem here, I can't leave the Pasadena area til just after 4. Have I mentioned wheee?!
I'll call and check, but based on the website, the downtown location doesn't appear to have a happy hour special thing going. Since it's tomorrow, I guess we need to nail such details down.
Ok, so downtown zip happy hour goes from 5-6:30 and it's the same deal.
Damn, I forgot to inquire about karaoke there. I'm assuming it's the same as the westside location, but it doesn't say anything on the website about that either. I've only been to the westside location. How should we decide this? My vote is for westside since it's near me and we can hang out there afterwards, if we want. There is street parking on Sawtelle and on streets perpendicular, so you shouldn't have to pay for that there.
Citysearch indicates karaoke rooms at westside location only. I'd copy and paste links if this lame library computer allowed me to do so.
I will give a dollar to anyone who sends me a shout-out from a strip club. That is all.
mct: That's a futile gesture; any dollar you send will end up going in a G-string sooner or later. I vote westside because it's close to Beverly Hills, teh karaoke factor, and the potential of an afterparty at Casa de Mandyhombre.
Last call! Zip Fusion Sushi, 11301 W. Olympic Blvd., LA CA 90064. This is the westside location, not the downtown. Website (it doesn't seem to like Firefox)
Happy hour goes from 5-7 with monkeys arriving as early as 5.
Missed it by
Thank you mandyman, for suggesting that interesting strip of Sawtelle for the meetup - it was boba-licious! I enjoyed seeing you guys again.
It was a fun night indeed. I'm so glad I know people who don't seem to mind if I try underwear on over my pants in the middle of a store.
Mind? I would have been sadly disappointed if you hadn't!
Isn't that how you're supposed to try on underwear? I must say, I'm quite impressed with the efficiency in which you've listed your shouts-out. A little odd that G through S should come before A through F, but nonetheless, I give it an A+!!
The London Monkeys, for not even having a meetup, get an Incomplete for this term.
Heh. They spelled quodninc's name wrong again. Woo Hoo! And where's the Kanuck meet ups then, yer giant benny?
