Curious George - Downloads on Tiger with Mozilla
Holla monos.
I'm having trouble downloading files from websites. I double click on the file (usually a PDF) and my download window comes up. It shows the status bar and when the bar is all the way to the right, it hangs up and just stays there, not completing the download. I have to cancel the download and as a result the files that I want don't actually download. I've checked my prefs on Firefox (v1.0) and can't seem to crack this nut. Any suggestions?

The only suggestion I have is to check the FiFox forum. While the Monkeys here are very helpful, I worry that perhaps we're overloading our front page with so many tech-support questions that are more appropriate for other spaces. (I live in a glass house here, but FiFox has a very good and focused forum, so you should be able to find an answer there.)

PDFs won't download.

have you tried hitting the top of the computer with your fist?
-
what about when you try this in Safari?

I figured it out. Turns out that I had Adobe Reader selected in Firefox as my reader for PDF files and I had updated to 7.0 a while ago. The computer would look for 5.0 and, not finding it, would hang up. I updated my helper apps in Firefox and everything seems to work fine. BTW, I generally don't post tech support CG's unless I'm really stuck, but I suppose I should have checked for a Firefox forum. Didn't think of that. Thanks everyone.

I meant to say adobe reader 5.0.

Not specific to PDFs only: I always download files using an external app, like the excellent Monica, instead of a browser. Any I've used have the tendency to stall, and Monica can re-start those from the it aborted.

...perhaps we're ovwerloading our front page with so many tech-supposrt questions... This is a Curious, George thread. Curious George threads from their beginning have been meant to be distinct from the regular/other Monkeyfilter FPPs. Monkeyfilter Ancient History: Waaaaay back when Gyan first proposed Monkeyfilter have something like AskMeta, [and Dizzy )I think) named it Curious, George] in this antique thread, the idea was that we combine both our Metafilter-like posts and MetaTalk-type ones on our front page. So it's been a two-for-one deal. There's no restriction -- barring the usual strictures against pr0n, self-linking, and double posting-- on what comprises a Curious George post, as they've evolved here. These threads cover a wide range of topics, and the mixture of them with the Monkeyfilter FPPs gives us a more informal front page than the Metafulter/AskMeta set-up. The monkey community's developed somewhat differently from MeFi et al, and expectations of what goes on there applying here may or may not be meet with disappointment. I mention this because we have so many new monkeys who may be unaware of this bit of MoFi history, and also because we now have the Anonymous, George threads enteriong the blend on our front page.
