Curious Pearl Jammin' George
...Gotta take a break from the dismal news....
Okay, so I'm going with my sister and a friend to the Pearl Jam concert here in Ottawa in a week.
I want to intro my friend to PJ music, I know some of their songs but not all of them. (e.g. I only found out about Yellow Ledbetter by accident, now it's one of my faves). So what are your favourite Pearl Jam tunes?
-
I like the song where the white guy mumbles his way through some lyrics. I think a lot of other people like that song too.
-
someone at monkeyfilter figured out the weblink to the someone who figured out the lyrics to yellow ledbetter.
-
Last Kiss
-
There's a white guy?

The first three albums are classics. Vitology, Vs. and Ten are great albums. They allow trading of their live shows and have released most of their concerts form teh the past few years on cd's so if you look around online it should be easy to find some of their live stuff. I know you can use Furthur to download their concerts. Or for $10 you can download the concerts they are doing on this tour at bootlegs.pearljam.com

*delurks, avoids the My Music Is Cooler Than Yours part* I grew up on Ten (well, in high school) and also have a weak spot for "Dissident."
-
I always thought PJ was one of those fortunate/unfortunate bands that did their greatest work FIRST. Ten was just absolutely magnificent, song after song. ANYTHING after that was a let-down, and they've never reached that peak since. I feel the same way about Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville. God, I love Liz Phair.
-
i like their album with the baby chasing money in the swimming pool on the cover.
-
That damn baby tried soooo hard... Swim! Baby! Swim!
-
I liked Daughter and Better Man. Hated grunge. Those are more pop songs with interesting lyrics.
-
You just like her because she wants to be your blowjob queen.
-
Yes. Yes I do. Is that so wrong?
-
Ohh, "Daughter" and "Better Man." I tend to forget about those two because they're so damn depressing. Good choices on those.
-
Do the Evolution One of my favourite music videos.
-
I was at a store the other day and Better Man came on, and I'd forgotten how much I'd liked that song. I haven't followed PJ in years and years, so I don't really have any advice, but just wanted to say - have fun!
-
Rear View Mirror from the album: Vs and Given to Fly from the album: Yield Those are my two definite favorites. Coming from an official, NW flannelite. Longjohns under ripped Levis forever dood!
-
Elderly Woman Behind The Counter in a Small Town. Can't remember which album has the live version but it's the only PJ song I like.
-
For a slight change of pace from the usual PJ: "Off He Goes" and "Nothing Man." "Hail, Hail" and "Do The Evolution" are my personal faves, but I grew up with the later Pearl Jam, just after they entered their weird post-grunge stage.
-
... but just wanted to say - have fun! Thanks, Livii, I will! Hmmmm the good news is that I like practically all of the songs y'all have listed. "Do the Evolution" is new for me but i did check out the neat little animated video linked by flying_w. It reminds me of the movie Akira for some reason, maybe it's the drawing style. I like "Off he goes", it's sorta like "Elderly Woman...", a narrative - mellow, melancholy kinda piece. "Dissident" is great. Sometimes I think that "Elderly Woman..." is a sequel to "Dissident", except decades after. "Rearviewmirror" is great and "Given to Fly" is almost up there with it for me. I'll have to check out Last Kiss. How about these two: "Last Exit" and "Immortality"?
-
'Of The Girl' - Sublime... /from 'Binaural.'
-
Yow! The concert was great. We all got blow'ed away. How about a smoking hot ten-minute version of rearviewmirror? How about a cover of Neil Young's "Rocking in the Free World" with Sleater Kinney as backup vocals/guitar/drums? And "Crazy Mary" with an amazing guitar solo? Vedder's voice was in great shape and the band was tight as can be. How about "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter", played as warm and familiar as a homecoming? And what an encore! 40 minutes! It was a 3-hour non-stop Pearl Jam rockerama. *falls over exhausted*

oh, and thanks for the link jcalhoun, i'm going to pony up the $10 and buy a copy of the concert....
