That's good stuff.
-
my immediate response: oh, my, god.
-
Reading left to right, as with English, "Trekkie == Pedophile" is incorrect, as per the article: "This does not mean that watching Star Trek makes you a pedophile." Now if you mean that as an assignment, reading from right to left, then I guess you might have a case: "It does mean that if you're a pedophile, odds are you've watched a lot of Star Trek." I think I'd go for the notation: Pedophile -> Trekkie
-
It's those damned tribbles I tells ya.
-
Hyperbole, according to Det. Lamond of the Toronto Police Sex Crimes Unit. Though a Trekkie paedophile is an appealingly horrible thought. "Come here, Timmy, we're going to play 'Vulcan mating ritual' again."
-
Oh, duh, Ladowsky already linked to that. *whacks self* I missed her link, caught up in my search for the original LATimes article, which had disappeared into its pay-access archives.
-
"We always say there are two types of pedophiles: Star Trek and Star Wars," says Det. Ian Lamond, the unit's second-in-command. "But it's mostly Star Trek."
-
goetter, this is not the thread to be whacking yourself in.
-
you know, I seriously considered posting this, but I just could not bring myself to use material that I found on Fark. gotta love the impromptu photoshopping in that thread, though.
-
techsmith: if it were an assignment there would only be one equal sign. As it is, it's more of a case testing. Either way, I'd agree on the Pedophile -> Trekkie notation. word to the mct for an awesomely flame baited fpp

(correalation != causality) && (this = junk)
-
Split infinitive == Pedo
-
always dereference your pedophile pointers
-
the solution is clear. this star trek must be banned, along with all of its derivatives and merchandising. all those who have been exposed to this program must be reeducated with compulsory watching of epsiodes of babylon 5.
-
Wasn't the entire concept of this article taken from an out-of-context quote by the people who found that missing girl in the Disney pictures? One of them said "haha, all the guys watch Star Trek" and the reporter took it as the literal truth, or something -- and then everyone took it and ran with it until they actually stopped to ask the guy, "hey, were you serious?" and he said "no, um, a few of them were trekkies but not all of them, or close to all of them."
-
Well, I'm neither a trekkie nor a paedophile. So on that evidence, I say ban 'em both.
-
Doesn't this raise the uncomfortable issue that popular kid-oriented performers The Wiggles wear outfits that look like uniforms from Star Trek: the Original Series? Just sayin'.
-
Wendell: Agreed. And those vexing Teletubbies. It's obvious they're plushies to the max. And they prey on kids and have a quick getaway vehicle. However, I recall reading a couple of accounts of how many actual child molesters are geeky sci-fi types. It sticks in my mind.
-
I believe when the original article appeared a few months ago someone called the cops for confirmation and they denied they said what was quoted. It was on Metafilter but I'm too lazy to look it up.
-
I'll do it! Thread and relevant comment.
-
Wiggles = gah!
-
Lights, camera, action, WIGGLES! Welcome to our TV show, Lights, camera, action, WIGGLES! Everybody let's go. /kills self So if the Wiggles' outfits are like Star Trek's, then Murray is expendable? Good.
-
I hate the Wiggles with the white hot fury of a thousand boiling suns.
-
Split infinitive == Pedo Ok, I admit it... I laughed at that one.
-
What I found far MORE interesting was all the outrage in the comments that followed. Despite the article clearly stating over and over that (unlike the title of this post) that Trekkie does NOT equal pedo, it appears half the posters that followed took it as such. Or felt that the mere suggestion of a link was enough to warrant a page-long defense of their favorite TV show. And then pause to wonder why B5 fans aren't singled out for abuse nearly so much.
-
MonkeyFilter: Well, [at least] I'm neither a trekkie nor a paedophile. Hey.
