Have a look around the architecture and mosaics of the 6th century monuments of Ravenna. I highly recommend the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the Neonian Baptistry, and the Basilica of San Vitale. Don't forget to look at the floors and ceilings! At the other end of the Middle Ages are the Gothic cathedral of Amiens (with "movies"-- click the yellow dots on the cathedral plan to move around) and York Minster. Alas, neither of these latter two allows you to focus on the ceiling and twirl around. (Quicktime required)
  • Nice! Beautiful details, especially on the ceilings. Plus you've got great timing, bibliochick, as I'm currently reading "A History of the Middle Ages". This will provide some excellent visuals to go along with my mini-education. ( ( ( (
  • Gooood stuff. Thanks! I love ogling around on panoramas.dk. Everything from nature shots to architecture... some of them with 360ยบ views. Even those with fixed viewpoints are incredible; just check this Yokohama view.
  • Thanks for this, bibliochick. I've been to York Minster, but sadly not to Ravenna. Yet.
  • Heh. I went to York not long ago, but was too mean to pay the entry charge. Now I'm glad I didn't. Saved a fiver there, methinks.
  • kitfisto, I've been there a number of times and the VR tour just isn't the same. Now I'm really excited about the prospect of seeing Ravenna sometime! This is a great post. Thanks!
  • You had to pay a fiver? I went eight years ago, and ignored the admonition to pay. Afterwards, I was so impressed that I paid up.
