"Crossing the species line" does not generally occur in the wild, because "it would result in diminished fitness of the offspring," said Ronald Tilson-- Now I don't think this is actually true, or at least it's a gross simplification. What he should have said was, "Lion's don't think tigers are hot." Of course, "diminished fitness" might have caused lion-fancyin' to be bred out of the gene pool, but it's not the direct cause.
