Dark Alliance The late Gary Webb's classic series of articles written in the mid-90s for the San Jose Mercury News, detailing the links between the CIA, crack cocaine and the 'contra' campaign against the Sandinista government in Nicaragua, are now available in full on line again, with added background and documentation.
  • On closer inspection, I think the background material was always there. Duh.
  • Needless to say, this is a noteworthy post! ))) for sharing it.
  • What? A U.S. government agency involved with the drug trade? I'm shocked! SHOCKED, I tell you! (The main reason that drugs are illegal is to keep profits high.)
  • The Wikipedia article mentions that it was ruled a suicide despite two sets of gunshot wounds to the head, something which I think would be a little suspicious. It's a shame that these articles spelled the end of his career as a journalist, but I'm glad that they're accessible once again as I missed them the first time around.
  • it his death
  • Yes, his death was suspicious. Usually 'they' suicide you *before* you spill the information, after that it becomes pointless and risky, perhaps 'they' thought he would write more damaging material. Having said that, IIRC his first shot went thru' his jaw, so perhaps it's not all that odd he tried a second one. There are legitimate cases of people missing the first time and having a second go, particularly with the lower caliber weapons. The destruction of his career was probably enough to send him over the edge.
