Curious Flats: as the dust settles in London, where can my friend?

So my Korean friend landed just hours after the attacks and is now searching around London with one of our German friends trying to find a flat. Thing is, maybe they just don't know where to look. They're finding police officers everywhere, but nothing in the way of affordable flats. She'll be going to Shakespeare College at 134 Curtain Road which claims to be within 5 minutes of Liverpool and Old Streets. Any uk monkeys with any ideas? what kind of rent is reasonable? Thanks in advance.

  • oh, and just so there is no confusion, only she will be living in the flat. our german friend is just helping out.
  • That was a very good sentance construction in the title. There's a term for it, but sadly I forget what it is. Unfortunately I can't help you with the flat thing. Good luck, we're all counting on you.
  • Hackney is cheap, towards that end of town, but can be a bit dodgy.
  • Best place to look for accommodation is Loot magazine. Or you can subscribe online to get the latest offers. Good way to find out about an area if she has web access is UpMyStreet.com. Without knowing what area she wants to live in or what her price range is, it's hard to say more. London is expensive.
  • moveflat.co.uk is very good
  • Chyren: That kind of construction is known as either syllepsis or zeugma (no one seems to be sure about the strict definition of the latter, it seems).
  • thanks everyone for providing info, a possible home, and some trivial pursuit. in yoda speak: yet another, less curious, syllepsis it was
  • unless she's on a big budget, it's going to be hard for your friend to find a place to live in alone - those on a budget (most of us) share houses/flats. Rent for a room in a shared house starts from £90/week - for a studio flat you're looking at more like £200/week, depending on where it is.
