A real James Bond calls it quits.
Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale - Decorated vet, POW, Perot VP candidate, Epictetus scholar, Illinois native and all around tough motherfucker, died yesterday from complications related to Alzheimers. He was 81.
I'm not much for obit posts, but he was of a rare breed, and one that will be sorely missed. It's safe to say I admired him.
-
It's people like that that make me realise what a Walter the Softy I am. Good on him.

HURRAY FOR ILLINOIS! and, might i add, "Who am I? Why am I here?"
-
You're Sidey, of course, here for our entertainment.

So, I'm back at work after my wife giving birth to our seven-week premature son, (everyone is fine, thanks), and look at the 'Priority 1 Issues' piled up on my desk and think, "Huh, what's that compared to what I'm going through". Then I read what this gentleman had gone through, what he experienced, and then I think, "Huh, what are my problems compared to what he went through". Sweet Magna Mater, what a reality check.

Yay. More crotchfruit!
-
Congrats on the groin-grommet.
-
WPDK, be sure to post details/pics in the wiki!
-
and please tell me someone out there is old enough to remember the "Who am I? Why am I here?" quotation... that was a gem of vice-presidential debate lingo.
-
Oh, I remember that. I daresay most here do.
-
I'm not too sure about this phrase "crotchfruit". I prefer the more poetic "fruit of thy loins", but that's just me.
-
Oh, and god's speed JBS. RIP.
-
Damn, I didn't know he had Alzheimers. Courage Under Fire is an amazing little book. Thanks for this post, Fes.

Works by Epictetus
-
He has been hammered on the forge of brutality Indeed. .
-
An admirable admiral. Rest well, Stockdale.
-
I remember that. Why can't we go back to the innocent era of politics when shit like that happened?
-
Gridlock!
