More good news: Rotten.com site shut down by government. Specifically, the Gaping Maw (and rate my boner). It's all fun and games until you're censored.

Might I suggest someone put this on metafilter as soon as possible?

  • Quick! Someone pull the daisy_may thread before someone inadvertently clicks the damned link and gets us all in trouble! *bastards
  • No way! It's a disguisting site, but that doesn't mean it needs to be shut down! Fer Christ's sake, it's rotten dot com. ROTTEN. If people don't want to see images that are ROTTEN, they shouldn't click. Gah! *head explodes*
  • Oops, I thought you'd said rotten.com shut down. That'll teach me to comment before reading the supporting links!
  • What the hell am I supposed to do with my free time if I can't rate boners? This is an outrage!
  • *wishes she had known about the rate boners site before it was shut down*
  • (My boner won.)
  • It also applies to any erotic sites linking to or even sampling erotic material. Every thumbnail image has to be researched and verified not just by the site originator, but by any that host that image. This basically puts paid to any small thumbs of even pr0n actresses that have been working since the early 80s since the data verifying their age is out of reach of the individual site owner, for example Sensible Erection which otherwise would not be regarded as a pr0n site per se. This is a ridiculous piece of legislation, but only those who can see the Long Game understand what the real goal is. Remember, 70% of the internet is Pr0n. If you cripple the internet and it's main source of money, you cripple a vast source of criticism of dominant regimes. This isn't about porn.
  • Great... now that I can't feed my insatiable lust for all things raunchy on the internets... I guess I'll just have to go back to exposing myself to women on the subways, and robbing co-ed dorms of dirty panties....
  • Quick.... SOMEONE NEEDS TO GET IN ON THE GROUND FLOOR!!! I bet you'd make a billion bucks if you started up a web site which features all the registered Adult stars info and encrypts your URL or contact info into every jpeg, wmv, and mpg. so no matter where the media goes, your info goes along with them, and the means to contact you with. Sorta like a Verisign for pr0n (but not evil like them...)
  • /gives +1 to sugarmilktea
  • You know, some of the things happening lately have made past rambles of tinfoilers sound reasonable, even short-sighted. This is all a joke, right? Yes, the joke's on us. We've all left it happen. Well, not all. But... oh well.
  • Awesome idea, Debaser626! Just might work. I agree that this an absurd attempt to shut down the dissenters. Don't these jackasses have anything more important to deal with? How about aggressively pursuing pervs who are actually exploiting children?
  • Flagpole, your comment reminded me that last night, while watching Ripley's Believe it or Not, my husband said to me "you know, the things that our government has been doing lately should be on this show". Heh. Sometimes I seriously can't believe this is crap is happening. Last night, watching the Daily Show, Jon highlighted how the democrats had to meet in the basement to discuss something-or-other (Gitmo, disagreement with current policy, Patriot Act, can't remember which), because the republicans wouldn't give them meeting room space. Those are Jon's exact words, that the republicans wouldn't give up meeting space. He might be skewing it a bit, but come ON! The basement?! And how about the Judiciary Chairman not letting democratic reps speak, and then cutting off a session (in violation of the Rules of the House) (taken from article), during a Judiciary Committee hearing on the impact of the Patriot Act (also taken from article). No one by the majority can win in this kind of atmosphere. They've proven that they're above laws and rules, while holding everyone else to extremely strict laws and rules. Shit like this is why I quit paying attention to the news. Blech.
  • (picks up pieces of minda25 exploded head, rushes off to rotten.com)"Lookee!! Exploded Head!!!
  • BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
  • At least the Rotten Library is still up.
  • Those who want to join CHIREN SELIN in the overthrow of the current regime REMAIN SILENT.
  • I didn't read the details of the legislation, so.. isn't this just going to result in sites relocating in name to rogue porn-harboring states?
  • Over in the blue, someone linked to this Wired article, in which a woman was quoted saying this: "Until the public admits it watches this and allows itself to be counted, it deserves to have the stuff taken away." Hmmm.........
  • Rather than continually copy+paste text from links from the Mefi post about this, I recommend y'all go take a look at the post, and the linkies inside.
  • Regarding Debaser's comment, I really think something like this is exactly what will happen. Think about it. Nothing has driven innovation on the web more than pr0n. Not military uses. Certainly not political. It's the pr0n that has built the internet. Privacy measures. Credit Card technology. Secure sites. Anonomizers. Maybe some political dissidents/paranoids wanted some of this, but the drive behind it was (I argue) getting pr0n to the people. This puts more roadblocks in the way, which will be overcome by the most brilliant technological minds or hive of minds on the planet, in the name of freedom, individualism, antiestablishmentarianism, but mostly, big bazongas and shaven love trenches. Really, it's why I still have faith in humanity.
  • How are they able to get away with this? Tyranny is always better organized than freedom.
  • TenaciousPettle, that's the first time I've ever seen "antiestablishmentarianism" seriously used in a sentence. Thanks, man! :o)
  • MonkeyFilter: in the name of freedom, individualism, antiestablishmentarianism, but mostly, big bazongas and shaven love trenches. I tip my hat to you, sir. Who needs, truth, justice, and the American Way?
  • fwiw, ratemyboner.com wasn't actually a boner-rating site, per se... just a humor site w/ eight or ten daily submitted humor items. sometimes pretty gross (photo of guy passed out at toilet after shitting himself), but otherwise fairly tame (photo of humorous printed typo/engrish). also: a very minor point, in case it wasn't immediately clear... the rotten.com family of sites had pre-emptively shut themselves down, as far as i can tell... i.e., they hadn't yet received a cease & desist (or equivalent) for noncompliance of this, uh, new law.
  • The only way Wedge knows that about ratemyboner is because a friend told him.
  • Mike Seaver's friend was always my favorite Boner.
  • I never got to post my boner. *sigh*
  • Don't worry squidranch, I posted your boner for you!
