Life on a research station in Antarctica Simon Coggins has been in Antarctica since 2003, and he writes about his adventures. -- via BoingBoing

Recent posts cover their Midwinter celebration, the day it reached -50 degrees, and information about the research station. It's really interesting stuff, and the blogger (who manages data about the upper atmosphere for a living) focuses for the most part on the positive aspects of his job and way of life.

  • great post, thanks! I love stuff about people whose lives are radically different from mine... I also highly recommend Clublife.
  • also, this is amazing.
  • drjimmy: I just spent the better part of an hour reading the Clublife link. Thanks!
  • It's all about the antifreeze.
  • When I first heard about Clublife, I literally went back through his months of archive and read every single post. Flat out, the guy can write, which makes him one in a million in the blog world...
  • Wow. What a fantastic microcosm. And I agree that his writing is involving and interesting. Wouldn't that be cool for a year or two (no pun intended) to do some work out there.
  • Also see Big Dead Place, for a more sardonic take.
  • I would love to do a job like that - a bit of science, quick game of snowballs, kill the shape-shifting alien, sod off and get wasted, do it all again tomorrow. Brill.
  • I'm applying again this year. And yeah, Big Dead Place is the shiz.
  • What kitfisto said. Plus, I live and work in Winnipeg and don't own a car. Antarctica would be no problem for me.
  • Thanks for the link, el wombato! I spent way too much time reading this :)
