Plea for help from all you cine-philes out there Hey all, Don't mean to be an obnoxious monkey, but I could really use some help and figured many monkey brains were better than mine alone. Does anyone know where/how I can access films by Senegalese directors (original French or Wolof is fine, though English subtitles a plus) either in New York City, Boston or on the web? And I don't just mean Ousmane Sembene--I'm looking for work by Moussa Toure specifically, but any African film resources would help. Thanks everyone!!!! p.s. Just wanted to say hello again after a long absence. I just returned from a five-month stay in Senegal. It was great to be there, and now it's great to be home.
  • Not very helpful for you, I know, but there is a season of films by Ousmane Sembene at the National Film Theatre in London at the moment http://www.bfi.org.uk/showing/nft/sembene/
  • for anyone who is interested... (accidently pressed post instead of preview, there - I haven't done that in ages)
  • Did you try googling for it? That's pretty much the only resource I can think of.
  • Aren't there African immgrant communities in NYC? Go there and check out the video stores. I seem to recall reading about an indoor market area in Queens or something like that. But the article was about it being shut down.
  • I don't see what you're looking for there, but I found NicheFlix the other day. Looks like they take requests in their forums.
  • /threadjack It was Kim's Video, a great place for finding odd and obscure video stuff (ah, all those Quay Bros. and Svankmajer tapes so many, many years ago...) Another casualty of the copyright skirmishes.
  • I'd also look into who the distributors of the desired films are and find out through them who is handling their video in your country. I'm pretty sure a good google search or IMDB could find that info.
  • Not Kim's actually. This was a market full of vendors that catered to the local African immigrant communty in one of the outer boroughs. The property the building was on had been sold or something. Though Kim's is indeed lovely.
  • Not specific, but maybe some leads... Facets in Chicago is the old-school resource for hard-to-find films in the US. You could contact them. This is where my film studies prof in college got all the rarer stuff he showed us. Also try GreenCine, which is maybe a little less esoteric. It's supposed to be similar to NetFlix, but not as mainstream. I can't guarantee that either of these places actually HAVE what you're looking for, but they would be good places to start, esp Facets.
  • hey, nanga def? Ana waa ker ge?
  • Bu baax! You might contact the Walter Reade; they have regular African film festivals (unfortunately, you missed this year's), and I'll bet they could tell you what you want to know.
  • By the way, I can't help but notice that above the "Post comment" line it says: « Older Tits! | Eat this... What kind of a site is this?
  • The mountain was still. It had been twenty days without food. We gave up hope of rescue long ago. We dug her out from the snow. The old woman from seat 14c. I began to cut with my pocketknife. I walked back to the wreckage. And showed the huddled group inside. What I held in my hands. One looked up and said "whats's that?" Older tits, eat this. Was all I could say.
