Happy Summer Solstice, Northern Hemisphere monkeys! Happy Winter Solstice, Southern Hemisphere monkeys!

Does anyone do anything special for the solstice? (I plan on enjoying the gobs and gobs of daylight. I'm pretty near the edge of my time zone, so it should stay light until almost 10pm tonight. Sweet! I am a solar powered monkey.)

  • Usually I lure a pompous christian virgin to my pagan island, trap them in a wicker effigy, and burn them up, dancing naked through the flames.
  • Dammit -- I'm late mailing my Summer Solstice cards again! Never fails...
  • The Summer Solstice is also known as: Alban Heflin, Alben Heruin, All-couples day, Feast of Epona, Feast of St. John the Baptist, Feill-Sheathain, Gathering Day, Johannistag, Litha, Midsummer, Sonnwend, Thing-Tide, Vestalia, etc. Hee! I like 'Thing-Tide'*. There are quite a few things washed up on the tide here, some narstier than others. Happy solstice to you, meredithea! *Is that related to tongue-tied?
  • Chyren... I *adore* you for making that reference. Now where did I put my Salmon of Knowledge costume?
  • And Happy Solstice, too! In the past on the summer solstice, I've hung out with the Rad Fae, or had a huge party, or run away to the beach with one of my best buddies where we cast a circle at sunset. This year... I guess I will just eat an orange and watch Spellbound (but only cause someone borrowed my copy of The Wicker Man).
  • *sigh* I wanted to be in the sunshine, but right now I'm stuck trying to convert (a very large, stupidly complicated) word file into .pdf format. I keep locking up the computer. Any help from the monkeys?
  • (The computer lab assistant knows *nothing*)
  • :)
  • You have Acrobat Distiller? Print to that, rather than to a printer.
  • Expected to enjoy the 'moon illusion', but it's been overcast since yesterday. Today, the sun is way, way back the clouds. I would have preferred to be here, but no time, no time... Is this the day when one can stand an egg on its end or something? I recall trying it as a youngn'...
  • meredithea: distill it is sections, then put the sections together in Acrobat.
  • Ack! MS Word does put the R in Retarded sometimes... /SAVE FIRST/ But I would try any or some of the following: 1. Do a global font replace, then change it back and try it again. Sometime something gets b0rked in the formatting that only this can fix. 2. Try breaking it up into smaller sections, perhaps narrowing down the offending page? On preview: Fes wins. Happy Solstice!
  • This afternoon I plan to attend a Summer Solstice celebration hosted by a group of local shamanic practitioners, including a sprinkling of Buddhists, pagans and heathans of assorted descriptions. It is to be a potluck affair, with an art show, a bonfire and drumming and heaven only knows what other merriment lasting through the evening.
  • I always wait for the longest day of the year and then miss it, thus symbolizing the empty existence of the idle rich on Long Island during the 1920s "Jazz Age."
  • Thank you, meredithea, for reminding me to send a Solstice card to my friends! (And good luck with Mr. Bill's excellent document.)
  • This afternoon I plan to attend a Summer Solstice celebration... Way to go, bees! You sound like you're deep in the heart of Goddess country. With reference to the art show, do you by any chance know a lady named Lisa who does surrealistic computer art?
  • Chy, I've been having a /hell/ of a time /luring/ pompous christian virgins. Is this an Aussie thing that makes it easier? How can I get better at Luring? Please hope me, time is short!
  • Tell them cardinal sin is no more! That may make them lower their defenses. Just don't explain *which* sin is that : >
  • Well, OneOliveShort, I suggest getting advice from Lord Summerisle, who is knowledgeable in such things.
  • Thanks for all the help with the .pdf, and I'm sorry for derailing my own post. I'm breaking the document back down to its component parts (it's my dissertation, so it's 300 pages long and has a bunch of pictures), then I'm making each part into a .pdf file. Then I'll figure out how to stick 'em together. Wheee! On another note, this girl is on her cell phone here in the computer lab. I now know all about her life and who hates her -- other than me -- and what her boyfriend is getting her for some gift. Shut up, girl in computer lab!
  • Instead of cardinal sin, may I suggest you enjoy this solstice with a little Cardinal Zin? Only if you're indoors, though. It's too hot outside for red. Round here, anyway.
  • I also figured out the page that was sinking me. It's the title page that I made using the Uni's own form! Ha! I think if I make one by hand it'll be both hunky and dory. It's overcast here now :( Though, if we get a good old storm, that'll be fun! I like playing out in the rain in the summer.
  • ...may I suggest you enjoy this solstice with a little Cardinal Zin? Or some Pacific Rim Dry Riesling. And hey, visit their home page. They've got a Monkey!
  • Damn dirty hippies
  • This is my second-favorite day of the year. I love the light!! My favorite is the day after winter solstice, when I know the days are getting longer.
  • Nifty APOD picture showing solstice sunsets on a single panoramic landscape.
  • For the summer/winter solstice this year. And Midsummer's Day is still to come.
