GoDaddy Loves Torture. Bob Parsons, founder of GoDaddy (the domain registrar and hosting company) came out in favor of torture on his blog today.

He seems to think we're actually being pretty wimpy about it and /or not torturing enough people. Sorry if this re-opens old wounds, but sooner or later, we need get around to figuring out if its our principles we're fighting for and if so, just what those principles are, or if we've decided that the ends justify the means.

  • Why do these fuckwads always use September 11th as reason enough to torture people? Why don't they just admit that it gets them off to imagine other human beings writhing in pain? Mealymouthed jerks.
  • .."just what those principles are, or if we've decided that the ends justify the means." Man, these kinds of people don't even understand the question. I think we have to get around to figuring out what makes right-wingers so fuckin' st00pid. I mean, is it the preservatives in the food they eat, or what?
  • Also.. that is the longest title for an html page I have yet seen. WTF? I mean.. black hole of utter stupidity.
  • I think it's the steriods in the beef. I say we put them up against a wall and shoottickle them.
  • Many of the arguments come down to the "these people are our enemies, we are at war (but not in a "Geneva Convention" sort of war), therefore, we should do what we have to. The problem, ignoring whether torturing actual terrorists is morally or ethically justified, is that not everyone held in Guantanomo Bay is a terrorist. Some are people that were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. So we get to torture the innocent people, as well as the terrorists. Why isn't there a domain registrar that isn't some combination of evil and incompetant?
  • Fucking enough already. Yak yak yak... I stood and watched the events of 9/11 (god, I hate to even type that - - so sick of being bombarded with that date) with my own bare eyes. Saw the bodies fall, buildings fall, senses fall, and basic civil liberties fall... This makes me sick. I had a long diatribe all ready to post - - but I don't want to further rehash what I've most likely spewed once-over-twice already. This guy is a fuckwad. Let it go already. Weak arguments to boot...
  • Read the comments to see Bob's rebar sharp wit.
  • Oh, and this is the reason why I use Gandi.net. OK, it's not, but the prospect of giving my money to Yet Another Corporation caused me to choose a European alternative.
  • YEah, I think we best leave this guy slide.. but the temptation is there to post a big screed to his comments, rebutting everything with extensive links & evidence. It's a toss up between whether you think one has to tirelessly fight this sort of rabid crazy thinking wherever it arises lest we become overrun with it, or whether it is a waste of time and just stay the hell out of the argument. I'm sort of torn. No energy to spend on this guy, though. I think the link should be bandied about a bit, though, so that he gets a bit of shall we say feedback.
  • Touché!
  • He's entitled to his opinion, and I'm entitled not to use his service (and to encourage others not to).
  • I'm with sugarmilktea. Before the advent of the Internet was a Golden Age during which time it was only possible to be aware of the braying assholes in your immediate area. Nowadays we've all got asshole-detection-radii of, like, a hundred thousand miles, and it's FUCKING TIRING.
  • ...the temptation is there to post a big screed to his comments, rebutting everything with extensive links & evidence. He'll respond with a one sentence denial and thank you for your post. His willful ignorance is impressively strong.
  • Yes, the ignorance is strong in that one.
  • Wow. Hadn't bothered to read the comments before. What a laff riot this guy is.
  • Many of this "talking points" are verbatim from Rush Limbaugh (and, I assume from the RNC?).
  • "Go Daddy" "The healthy man does not torture others - generally it is the tortured who turn into torturers" "Go Daddy" Makes ya wonder.
  • Well time to go cancel that account. Any chance Dreamhost is still ok? I really like them.
  • ...generally it is the tortured who turn into torturers Or, the people who don't actually *do* the torturing, just order it done.
  • Hmmmm. What are my options if I've already prepaid for several years?
  • I hope he stands up and salutes the flag, the day some of his loved ones get wrongfully imprisoned without any rights and raped by trained dogs in front of relatives. And yeah, making available a video with the poor WTC jumpers will make it OK for many people that innocents get their lives shattered by army and contractors. Sure.
  • Cali, I just transferred my domain from GoDaddy to Network Solutions. NetSol has a thing where they give credit for prepaid years. I didn't read it very carefully because mine was due to expire in a few months anyway. Other services might have similar offers.
  • 'Close or clean up' Gitmo also, what rushmc said.
  • Umm... you realize that Network Solutions is actually the worst of the bunch, right?
  • If Bob Parsons believes his strong feelings about 9/11 justify the scrapping or careful evasion of international agreements on prisoner treatment, then perhaps he'll use some other strong feelings in the future to justify the scrapping or evasion of his business responsibilities and contracts. I'm not in the market to boycott him, but I can't see any reason why anyone would do business with him any more - not because of his politics, but because of the attitude about promises that they imply.
  • Umm... you realize that Network Solutions is actually the worst of the bunch, right? Who are some of the best? Sorry for derail, starting up site soon.
  • Caviar: That was my fear, but we use them where I work, and I've not had any issues. Of course, if I've just landed myself in a pit of vipers, I'll have to jump out as quickly as possible. Mine was an ideological shift, not a technical one. I never had any technical problems with GoDaddy; I just don't want to continue supporting them with my cash. (And sorry for the continued off-topic-ness. But, as this is my first thread to post in on MoFi, I may as well make an ass of myself early and set the tone.)
  • Before the advent of the Internet was a Golden Age during which time it was only possible to be aware of the braying assholes in your immediate area. Nowadays we've all got asshole-detection-radii of, like, a hundred thousand miles, and it's FUCKING TIRING. I blame the intarweb for the increased proliferation of assholes and for further encouraging them in their assholery. I'm not necessarly convinced that it's the radiation being emitted from TV screens, monitors, and cell phones that is causing retardation, but there must be some kind of stupidity ray being emitted by assholes using these products.
  • Who are some of the best? Well, you could go with Gandi, who are in France. I doubt you'll find a registrar more against the war than a French one! The German registrar Joker might be a close second though.
  • Republican douchebag posts ignorant inflammatory tripe on blog. News at 11 (on fox of course).
  • Why are people so upset? The guy's entitled to his opinion, as well as his bland rhetoric.
  • Our military did not turn these prisoners over to our allies in the Middle East, for interrogation, because we as Americans do not support the use of torture to get information. I also personally do not think we should ever resort to torture. That said, I do not consider the interrogation techniques that are being used at Gitmo (ie sleep deprivation, etc.) to be torture. (emphasis mine) So, exactly what is this guy saying that's got ya'll so riled up?
  • f8x - bob has changed the content of his original post several times, i guess in an attempt to look less heinous. that disclaimer was added quite after the fact. for people looking for a new registrar, i've been using dotster for the last 5 years, for 10 domains, and i've never had any probs with them. a bit more expensive than godaddy, but so far, less insane.
  • Why are people so upset? The guy's entitled to his opinion, as well as his bland rhetoric. I don't know if people are so upset per se, rather, fucking tired of the non-stop rubbish that proliferates unabatedly [that's my take anyhow]. Personally, I respect any person's opinions, beliefs, morals - what have you - and welcome their vocalization. Yes, he is entitled to his bland rhetoric as well. Please, just pass me a sleeping pill before subjecting me to any more of it!
  • >The guy's entitled to his opinion Yeah, and civilians and prisoners in wartime are entitled to be treated according to the terms of the Geneva convention. We'll suspend those considerations and keep a bunch of people down a hole with black bags over their heads, but God forbid anybody deny this f*cking meatball his sacred right to his ignorant-assed opinion...
  • Somebody shoot me with a tranquilizer dart... to clarify, that wasn't meant to sound pissed at anybody here... just terminally disgusted with the state of the freakin' world...
  • After the crimes of this current regime are inevitably revealed, I wonder if the enablers of the regime will cry for just treatment?
  • Did everybody see where the godaddy guy is now backpedaling like mad?
  • Huh. I voted "no opinion" on his earlier entry, because it didn't display an opinion, just a bunch of retoric. Apparently I misunderstood the question.
  • Registered through: GoDaddy.com Domain Name: MONKEYFILTER.COM Created on: 26-Nov-03 Expires on: 26-Nov-05 Sucks that the least expensive option turns out to be evil. Reminds me of a certain department superstore which shall not be named in this thread.
  • I looked into transferring the domain back when we were with a NZ hosting company, and the hassle wasn't worth it. I don't know that I'd reconsider now over this, although the guy is obviously dodgy as. /retracts statement two or three times
