Gypsy Travellers in Britain
have a long history, but continue to face a great deal of prejudice. Many people are angry when they camp on public land, but when they try to buy land for sites, they are refused local planning permission.
Here are what some young Romany and travellers have to say about their lives, and why they like travelling, despite the trouble people give them - it's very worth listening to. Both the last link and the prejudice link have short audio excerpts, in Real Audio.

Sorry - another link I meant to include - Gypsies are 'Europe's most hated'. They talk about a controversial bonfire near the bottom of the article - I think I know someone from a nearby village who may have seen it.
-
A little more on Gypsies being evicted from land they already own. (self-ish link)
-
Interesting link, jb. I've always been facinated by these folks.
-
I was interested to learn that John Tams, who played Hagman in the Sharpe TV series, is s settled Traveller.
