Curious George: Going to Bonnaroo Any ideas or suggestions about what to bring to make the weekend even more enjoyable? Does anyone know how cell phone service is there ( we are hoping to use them to regroup after shows)? Any Monkeys going this year?
  • each time i see a FPP on Bonnaroo i think it has something to do with Lucille Ball, i know not why.
  • I lived in that area for a number of years, and visit with some frequency. The cell phone reception is fine. This isn't a very hilly section of TN, and you aren't that far from Nashville, Murfreesboro, and McMinnville which are much more populated areas. However, I don't know how the effect of thousands of people using cell phones at the same time might change that. If you spend any time in Manchester proper, you must eat at Jiffy Burger. It's a NASCAR themed joint with loaded baked potatoes the size of a baby's head. And when I say loaded, you can get any thing from brown gravy to SPAM on those suckers. I hear that the owners brother just opened a place down the street called Bubba's BBQ, which is supposed to be good too.
  • I know an assistant DA who works in the same county as Bonnaroo. She spends about half the year dealing with the mountain of cases stemming from arrests at the festival (usually drug related). Please be careful and try not to get swept up in anything even remotely illegal. Cell phone coverage could be sketchy out there. I've had decent luck with T-Mobile. YMMV. Bring lots of sunscreen and a hat. I'd love to join you since it's so close to my town, but I'll be learning how to give birth that weekend. Enjoy yourselves!
  • >>I'll be learning how to give birth that weekend heck with bonnaroo, party at mickey's place!
  • Sounds like an Australian town name.
  • hey amy! you gotta go to dollywood! any time you're anywhere near tennessee...go to dollywood! if you're just sleepwalking to get a sandwich...go to dollywood! it's a super blast! what are you doing in bonnaroo? vacation? family? ...trees?
  • Bonnaroo started three years after I left TN, which is major suck because I owned a house within easy driving distance. Even though I have friends who still live in the area, it's just too much of a hassle to make travel plans. Alas, Manchester is not close to Dollywood (it's about 3 1/3 hours away by car). But sexyrobot is right, Dollywood is freaking awesome.
  • oh!!! i got it!!! bonnaroo sounds like "babbalooooo!" that's what ricky used to yell at lucy. carry on.
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the Jack Daniel distillery tour in Lynchburg. Especially the part where I bought a bottle of whiskey and got drunk.
  • Um, mct... Lynchburg is in a dry county. That's right, you can tour the distillery, but can't by a drop. These are the reasons that I don't live in the South anymore.
  • Actually, it's changed. The distillery, after four years of lobbying the state ledge, got a special license to sell. They're the only one in the county allowed to. I WILL SCHOOL YOU ON WHISKEY, WOMAN. :D
  • from my friend in knoxville re: bonnaroo: two young folks died there last summer. drugs. ricky and lucy never had such bad times. just fights in grape vats and big cheeses disguised as babies. baba-loos.
  • So, when did this start? I lived in Memphis in 2000/2001, and didn't hear a word about it.
  • 2002. Obligatory link to festival website here.
  • Wow! Thanks for the clarification, MCT. And good on Jack Daniels. My family spent Thanksgiving at a cabin in the vicinity about 7 years ago. We toured the distillery the day after and enjoyed the tourists who were quite dismayed that they couldn't buy any liquid souveniers. Minda... I'm with you. I didn't learn about it until last year when a 17yo NYC acqaintance educated me. Who woulda thunk it. My friends and fam still in TN just weren't all that impressed.
  • Lynchburg is .. there's no alkyhol?? That's the stupidest fucking thing evar.
  • Well, nobody can legally sell in the county other than the distillery, but (a) it's not too terribly far to the nearest wet county and (b) half the county works for the distillery, which gives its employees a free pint a month for "medicinal purposes." But really, you'd think they'd change the law. There ain't much to do in Lynchburg but drink. Dry counties are a stupid idea, all round. Where I live, 43 of the 75 counties are dry. I live in a dry neighborhood, if you can grok that, and unsurprisingly, there's not a decent restaurant in spitting distance of my house.
  • Where I live, 43 of the 75 counties are dry. *shudders*
  • I go to school in TN, and will make it out there one of these years. Friends who've gone were quite high (cough) on the experience. Hope you have fun! Great bands in that lineup. Ozomatli, Drive by Truckers and Gov't Mule have reputations for excellent live shows, among others. Karl Denson has some pretty funky stuff.
  • Reads 'Bonnaroo'. Thinks of a rabbit with a built-in pouch, some bun who wouldn't hurt Australia.
  • Sexyrobot, I live and dream for going to Dollywood, but unfortunately it will not be on this trip to tennessee. Thank you for the advice and ideas (and the warnings - I'll be sure to pass them on).
