In 1974, a college dropout named Norio Suzuki decided to travel to the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Burma, Nepal, and perhaps a few other countries on his way. He told his friends that he was going to search for Lt. Onoda, a panda, and the Abominable Snowman. - The War is Over...Please Come Out
I know pandas are rare and few zoos have them, but I didn't know they were ranked up there with the Abominable Snowman.
I wonder why they decided to stay.
Perhaps Onoda explains in his book. The orders he was given (from the same source):"You are absolutely forbidden to die by your own hand. It may take three years, it may take five, but whatever happens, we'll come back for you. Until then, so long as you have one soldier, you are to continue to lead him. You may have to live on coconuts. If that's the case, live on coconuts! Under no circumstances are you [to] give up your life voluntarily."
'course it's true!
What the fuck was WWII for if not for stories like this!
What the hell is it with Japanese dudes? I mean, did they find any Germans subsisting on squirrels and old army boots in an underground bunker in 1962? How bout any Russians holed up in an overturned troika for 38 years?
Japan is a small place. It'd be easier to lose a few Russians, don't you think?
Japan has thousands of rocks islands that nobody cares about, and so does the Philippines. Indonesia has more useless islands than those two combined. It's impossible to know how many Japanese WWII vets are still hiding out there.
I know all this because I once read a detective manga where a bunch of people were trapped on one of those islands and got offed one by one. The killer appeared to be one such WWII vet (or was he?). Mangas teach you about life, universe, and everything.
