Stray Dog Saves Abandoned Baby. Newsfilter, I know, but wtf - it's a modern day Romulus or Remus. The dog carried the baby across the street, put her with its own puppies, and cared for her for two days. I hope someone takes the child - AND the dog - home.
  • The baby is being put up for adoption by the Kenyatta National Hospital, officers at the station told the AP. The dog and her pups will be euthanized. Crazy.
  • Dingoes raised my baby!
  • They're killing the dog?!?! WTF!?!? I missed that - goddamn, I wish I wasn't half a world away, I'd take that dog and her puppies too. Sigh. Shitty world.
  • For some reason, techsmith, I don't see anything about the status of the dog in the article but I gotta admit, I flew into a tiny rage when I read your quote about euthanasia. Tiny, but intense. I know feral or starving, sick dogs can be dangerous and should be put down, but this li'l pup just showed some beneficial reasoning by not just eating that delicious juicy baby, so a dog like that should be valuable to breed at least. Anyone who can't see that the dog is valuable beyond the normal awesome-ness of dogs is a fool. Not to say a serious mainline buzz, then drifting off under a heavy blanket of sedatives doesn't sound nice, relatively...
  • techsmith, what's your source? I didn't see that in the original article (not that I don't believe you, just want to see it).
  • I recall seeing this on the local news while on vacation last week. If I'm not mistaken, the baby is back with the parents now?
  • oh this is weird... China Daily May 14, 2005 HEADLINE: WOMAN ARRESTED OVER BABY CASE BODY: NAIROBI: A Kenyan woman arrested in the case of the baby who was apparently abandoned in a forest and rescued by a stray dog continues to deny she has anything to do with the infant, police said on Friday. Police were investigating the woman's claims that she had an abortion three weeks ago. Investigators were seeking the place where the woman says she had the abortion, said Lang'ata District Police Commander Joshua Omukata. He said he was misinformed on Thursday when he said the woman claimed she miscarried. "We are trying to find where she aborted from - was it at a doctor or at a home," Omukata said. "If we fail to find where she dumped the foetus, then we shall consider charges against her." Doctors believe the infant - dubbed "Angel" by hospital officials - was about two weeks old when she was found last week. The woman was taken for a medical examination on Thursday. If results are inconclusive, police may resort to DNA testing in an effort to determine whether she is related to the infant, Omukata said. "She says she aborted the pregnancy and that she is not connected at all with what happened" to the infant, Omukata said. "We want to follow it up until we find out the truth." A government spokesman and others have expressed some scepticism about the story of the dog's role in saving the child, saying it may be too good to be true. But many have been touched by reports of the rescue. The story continues to attract an outpouring of concern in Kenya as well as abroad. At the Kenyatta National Hospital, where Angel is being treated for exposure and an infection in her umbilical cord, 16 abandoned children are currently being cared for. The dog apparently found the baby wrapped in a plastic bag in the nearby Ngong Forest, said Mary Adhiambo and other neighbours who witnessed the baby's recovery in a litter of puppies.
  • and a doggie update... The stray dog is also being treated, said Mary Adhiambo, who lives in the poor Nairobi neighbourhood where the baby was found and she has adopted the animal. Workers from the Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals vaccinated the dog for rabies yesterday and a veterinarian will sterilize her for free tomorrow, Adhiambo said outside her wooden and corrugated-iron sheet shack.
  • Oh good! YAY to SideDish and her awesome google-fu - thinking about that poor dog being euthanized was really bumming me out, and I am NOT, repeat NOT, having a good day/week/month.
  • If that dog had actually been killed after rescuing that baby I think I really would have given up on the human race. I mean I've got just a tiny thread of hope left for us here. mygothlaundry, I hope the coming months bring good cheer to ya.
  • poor mygoth! here, have an extra-special kitten.
  • and techsmith, why did you add that mean phrase???? i couldn't find it anywhere in nexis or google, which means it must have flowed forth from your mischievous monkey fingers...
  • Man, I should have thought twice before lobbing that nade and going out for a run! It was my twisted little sense of humor getting the better of my bad sense of timing! *slinks away slowly*
  • Your profile says you're a good person, techsmith, and if you can't trust a profile who can you trust? :) now quit your slinkin'
  • all i can say is "wow", since i am late for the discussion. extra bananas for SideDish on the follow-ups!
  • glad to be of service!
  • techsmith, can you provide a link to the AP information?
  • Sorry, sideDish -- that was fast work ye did-- )))!!! I ought to have read down further in this thread, but started searching the internets. The dog has a name now, Mkowbozi or Saviour, and is living with the family in the compound whose children first heard the baby crying, apparently. The dog lost the last of her puppies shortly after the baby's discovery, and the belief is that this may have led to her finding the child. Have to disagree with you, oklo -- let him slink.
  • ARGH. Bless you, you ex-dog from the newspaper.
  • Gosh, that was a well-trained dog. And a dastardly cat.
