Curious George: Whatever happened to Manis? He was the Orangutan who played Clyde in Every Which Way But Loose, the Clint Westplastic movie. I'm aware that his replacement for the sequel (Manis had grown too large) died not long after it was made, but I can't find out what happened to the first 'Clyde'. Anyone know?
  • I fucking ate him, with some fava beans and a Irn Bru. *makes funny breathing in noise*
  • from the washpost, january 1979: Clint Eastwood reportedly is planning a trip to visit his friend Manis, who, after all, helped him make another million bucks. They haven't seen each other since filming of their hit, "Every Which Way but Loose," ended last June -- and that's a long time in an orangutan's life Manis' regular hangout is with the Berosini act at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Owner Joan Berosini doesn't think Manis will have forgotten about Eastwood. "Orangutans have very long memories. And he and Clint grew very attached to each other on the picture."
  • Manis is teh gay...
  • This century.
  • It's possible he's still alive, but he'd be pretty old. I think the average orang lifespan is around 35 years, and SideDish's story was 26 years ago. Dunno how old he was at the time.
  • He's taken the last right turn to the sky...
  • there was some talk he was beaten to death, but that sounds more like an urban legend.
  • Mannix
  • Really strange... I was looking up the same question a couple of months ago. Great films, regardless of how inane the plots were. Right turn, Clyde.
  • They had plots?
  • speaking of critter updates did you guys see today's washpost story on moe the monkey and his parents who were attacked awhile back? (don't miss their wedding portrait) ... (washpost links, reg req)
  • He was probably an adolescent orangutan when the movie was filmed, meaning he'd have been at least eight years old, probably more like ten to fifteen. That was in 1978, making him thirty-five now. They can live up to sixty years in captivity. So basically, if he's been well-treated and healthy, he's probably still alive in captivity somewhere. You could try contacting the production company, who may at least be able to provide his last-known whereabouts. My dad had both movies on video, so I watched them a lot as a little kid.
  • Manis is aged and infirm, but still selling condominiums in the Palm Springs area of California. Sexual harassment suits are reportedly pending, but Manis has an evangelical television broadcast deal currently in negotiation. Watch out Dobson!
  • Here's hoping he is still around. Remember "Cheetah" from the old Tarzan movies? He was still going strong last time I heard, and he would have just had his 73rd birthday last month.
  • IMDB sort-of claims that with a pro registration, you can contact Manis's agent. http://imdb.com/name/nm1213452/agent --Pat
