Curious George - Music for a doc on women in the military
I am cutting a promotional video that will be used to sell and raise money for a documentary I am working on, the topic of which is women and their changing roles in the military. The primary focus of the doc will be the women of WWII with the formation of the WACs, WAVs, etc...
The music could be as specific as period recordings about women in the military, or as broad as a good patriotic march, period or modern. Also, this is not a pro-war doc, per se, but it is pro-military and looks at the military experience from feminist perspective.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

Music on Federal Government Web Sites "The United States government may not have a cabinet-level department for the promotion of music, but there is a surprising amount of information about music and even actual music on the web sites of federal departments and agencies. You can explore online exhibits about the history of music in American life, make detailed examination of sheet music from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, see photographs of famous musicians, listen to sound files of historical performances, see the performance schedules and order CDs of the service bands, check out the most recent music-related government grants, read about the experiences of American musicians studying abroad, and explore the rich programming of public broadcasting. The following sites contain good information for educators, researchers, music-lovers, and the just plain curious. This web guide is a directory of the principal sites in the areas listed above. Not included here are the numerous concert series and festivals put on by the Library of Congress, Smithsonian museums, and units of the National Park Service. Also not included is Congressional legislation pertaining to arts funding."

Might I suggest looking in this thread for some songs which might be useful?

Here's a list of popular songs during WWII and a few other songs about military service that might work.

"Before we married, mommy served in the WACs in the Phillipines Now, I have heard the WACs recruited old maids for the waaaaaaar, but mommy isn't one of those, I've known her all these years...."

You've probably seen some of those odd Time-Life compilations of music that they've been pumping out since at least the seventies, and I know they did a series called "Your Hit Parade" that covers top hits from year to year, and that they definitely put out ones that covered the war years. Somehow the 1945 one ended up in my CD collection, and you know, that is some really, really, fun music. Despite the fact that it feels (to me, anyway), decidedly strange to own a Time-Life CD, I'd love to track down the other war year compilations.

Army of Me -- Bjork Sadly, that's about the best I can do, and it has nothing to do with war.

I ended up using a Jeff Beck instrumental of "amazing grace". None of the period stuff cut very well with the alternate images I had of the old gals intercut with young pretty women who are currently serving. It is interesting how masculine-centric the whole idea of military service is. There were scores upon scores of songs regarding military service for men, but (at least of this evening) none that I could find with my google-fu.

The above should read but (at least of this evening) none about women that I could find with my google-fu.
