Curious George - E3 Monkeys? During the "outage", I was over at AskMe and saw that some MeFites are planning an E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) meetup on Wednesday, 5/18. Any monkeys attending E3 and/or the meetup and/or in LA and just wanna hang out this week?

I'll be attending E3, but likely can't make the official meetup, so I'm open to other suggestions or even a monkey-only event.

  • I won't be there, but please let me know if they announce a release date for Spore. Gracias.
  • I won't be able to make it, but downtown LA is my neighborhood, so here are some suggestions on how to spend your nights after the convention: - The Golden Gopher at 8th and Hill is a nice place, and not too expensive. It's mostly empty between 6pm and 10pm with the after-work yuppie crowd, but then it gets pretty packed with hipsters, so that's fun too. Besides a decent jukebox, you video game kids might get a kick out of their 3 cocktail-style arcade cabinets. - The Hotel Figueroa (Figueroa and Olympic) has a cool bar in the back with a pool. It's finally warm enough that people may be hanging out there. I'd say stay away from The Standard, no matter how many people try to recommend it to you. If you're looking for some music, there's an artsy little club called the Smell in an alley around 3rd and Main. They have shows on Wednesday and Friday this week, and admission's always $5. Skid Row is centered around 5th and San Pedro, if you want a different perspective after being told for four days that consumer electronics are a basic necessity of life. Oh, and for a greasy diner to spend 4-5am sobering up, the Pantry (also 9th and Figueroa) is where it's at. Skip Denny's and IHOP, you can have those anywhere.
  • To add to hutta's, recommendations, I stayed at the Grafton hotel recently, which is close to the Standard on Sunset in Hollywood. Not too shabby, but if you want the perk of getting into a club w/o a hassle, I'd consider the Mondrian hotel for Sky Bar (easier to get in during a weekday, btw). The restaurant at the Grafton, called Boa, is great if you love steak. As for Skid Row, I'm volunteering at the soup kitchen through Union Rescue Mission if you want to join on Sunday at 11am, that is if you're still around. I missed the unofficial meetup by MandyMan last Friday, and I have b-school during weeknights, sorry, but hope you enjoy LA.
  • I'm not going to be able to make it as I will be in DC this week, but I second the Figueroa Hotel. The back bar is a treasure. For food you might want to try Phillipe's for french dip sandwiches (cool old school ambieance) as well as one of the taco stands on Olivera Street.
  • Thanks for the tips, everyone...unfortunately I'm booked pretty solid with appointments at the con so I don't think I'll get to see much, but I'll certainly keep all that in mind. The group's big plan for Friday is going to see Revenge of the Sith! Wow, I'm really geeky.
  • I'm in LA but not an E3er, and not really intimately familiar enough with the convention center area to suggest a nice meeting place. Feel free to email me if you want, though, or I'll just check back here later.
  • Thanks, Space Kitty. I can't make that time/day, but would love to check out the food at that place someday.
  • Last call.... for alcohol......
  • Wish I could make it, Space Kitty, but the drive from BFE to downtown is a drag. Actually, that's not too bad, it's the drive back to BFE and not being able to drink much because of said drive is the true drag.
  • It's always the drive back to BFE that'll get you.... Sorry we'll miss you, natasha!
  • And...........here's the wrap-up.
