Postal Food Drive - May 15th Are you monkey enough to clean out your kitchen cupboard for some non-perishable food? Sorry, bananas will not be accepted. On Saturday morning, leave it at your mailbox (US only) for your postman to pick up and deliver to food banks. It can't get easier than this!! If you are a bigger monkey, volunteer with me for the soup kitchen in Skid Row, downtown LA on 5/22... PS. I assume you monkeys help less fortunate monkeys once in awhile.
  • How the fuck am I supposed to help, I live in Oz!
  • If you live in Oz, at least you could contribute some poppies. Or Toto, even.
  • I will be in Washington DC, otherwise I would step up to the plate, so to speak.
  • Chyren - click the heels of your red shoes?? squidranch and all: Postal food drive is national; postmen from 10,000 cities across the US are willing to pick up your non-bananas.
  • Maybe I'm wrong, but...the link says it's on the 14th? Which would make sense, because I didn't think mail got delivered/picked up on Sundays...
  • Oops! At least, I know that someone is reading my link. Thanks, humoreffect. CORRECTION: May 14th, this Saturday.
  • What I meant was that I would volunteer in Skid Row. I've got goodies that I can donate on Saturday.
  • My girlfriend, through one of those self-chosen salary-deduction things, contributes a few bucks every paycheck to our state's chapter of U.S.A. Harvest. And by the way, we have food banks and "dining rooms" all over the area, not only our local "Skid Row" analog; I think that might be true other in other cities too. The Yellow Pages or United Way might have a listing of these other places that don't get as much press as those on "Skid Row" and so might be more in need of help and donations.
  • Big Davey - I'm glad that you found another way to give back to other monkeys. I personally prefer to donate time, rather than my hard-earned mula. My monkey heart is not dedicated to Skid Row. Honestly, this will be my first soup kitchen. From what I understand, Skid Row is the largest homeless district in the nation. I'm willing to open my monkey heart to other less fortunate groups - show me the way, Big Davey...
  • I prefer to donate time too. I don't often do soup kitchen work, but I organize local outings for a women's center in LA's Skid Row. Do you have a link or name for the particular soup kitchen in Skid Row that's on 5/22? Good luck with your efforts and thanks for the information. Wikipedia's Skid Row entry offers a little history on the term and more on LA's.
  • Good question, PY. Thanks for the info link on Skid Row. I was planning on posting info on the soup kitchen later, but due to the interest level, here you monkeys go... Union Rescue Mission
  • I wish I'd heard of this sooner. I rarely buy tons of food and have it lying around (how unAmerican), but I would have gotten some last shopping trip if I'd known. Hell. I'll make a note for next year.
