The MoFiWiki. A place to post your personal projects, ask for help, have a personal page, map yourself, find accommodation, explain in-jokes, or get a philosophical answer to the question that keeps you awake at 3am. Open to Monkeys only.
  • oooooooh coooooooool! a hot-fudge-'nanner-sunday thanks to Tracicle
  • I've been checking it out. I'm not a big wiki user, and I'm afraid I'll break something. But anything that's about and for us is totally rad. Thanks, T.
  • wow. this is very good. thanks, tracicle!!!
  • you will all buy my paintings...wooooooo
  • NOOOOOOO
  • you will all buy my album... woooooooo /apologies to kitfisto
  • okay, don't flame the newbie, but what does "wiki" mean?
  • pjjlady: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki
  • Awk awk ook ook wiki wiki.
  • tracicle - you're so damn awesome!
  • Nice work! I love Wiki but it's kinda stuffy there. I see potential.
  • Wikipedia, that is.
  • That personal page you linked is fucking rad.
  • sidebar? P.S. - you're amazing.
  • Excellent!
  • How do we create a redirect? I wanted to redirect "injokes" to "in-jokes" before we got several different pages going.
  • Jesus. I mean, like, you know, this is like the biggest self-link evah!!!
  • this is like the biggest self-link evah!!! And when you're no. 1, you can do it too!
  • This is wonderful and more than a bit scary. Thanks Tracy. I'm not sure what to say but I'll figure it out. With care. Over time. Awesome.
  • That is fucking AWESOME even for newbs like me. Especially. God-damned wow, tracicle. Thanks.
  • There's plenty of room for learning with a wiki, but I guess for those who want to play around with formatting, you should go play in the Sandbox. As some of you may have noticed, it's actuallly been up for a while, but I kept it on the blog to start with. Anyway, enjoy.
  • It's by mecurious (if you click on the "history" tab, you can see who's edited a page). I'm guessing, since it's also on the "Personal Projects" page, that it's just a case of figuring out where it's appropriate to put stuff. It's all stuff we can work out as we go.
  • Right on. I'm still figuring out the wiki, too. That's why I had to ask.
  • that's a great idea! if we had that i would have posted all my annoying wedding photos there instead of the front page.
  • New to the wiki, but this will give me the motivation to learn, I fear. Tracicle -- we love you. Seriously. You've given us so much already, and now we get even more. You are my new god.
  • No-one like a crawly bum lick... [but he's right]
  • quidnunc ... how did you know about the almonds? Thank you ever so much, tracicle - I see endless entertainment for monkeys in our future!
  • I love the map page. Personally, I now split North America in half (west/east) and imagine some type of Tupac v. Biggie battle going on or Superfriends v. Legion of Doom (dibs on being the Black Manta)
  • I was projecting.
  • Personally, I now split North America in half The "Superfriends" are the Democrats, huh?
  • No, since I'm splitting the continent in half and I'm the Black Manta, that would make the eastern half the Superfriends. I declare that Europe is the Wonder Twins (Janya and Zan...don't forget Gleek), Asia is Thundarr the Barbarian, Austrailia Spiderman and his Amazing Friends, Africa is The Saturday Supercade, South America Dungeons and Dragons and Antarctica will be the Smurfs.
  • Wow. I haven't been called a 'crawly bum lick' since -- wait, what time is it now..? I'll take it as a professional compliment.
  • Oh, how cool.
  • It seems to me that Wikis work best for as either collaborative sites (where multiple people can add/refine better information as the wiki ages) - like WikiBooks OR for dictionary/glossary/encyclopedia sorts of things (like WikiPedia) OR for TOPICAL sites (like my StormWiki - which is also collaborative and has elements of encyclopedia/glossary). I'm not sure I get the point of a monkeyfilter wiki. Wiki information is best by starting from a particular link/article and then following links in directions that you want to learn more about. Going to the Special:All_pages to see what's there isn't going to be practical after so many items are created. That's one reason that I linked to StormWiki from multiple places. I'm guessing that the User pages would be one way people would access articles (since all wiki.monkeyfilter users are monkeyfilter users). And I made a page of it's own (like tracicle suggested - so it could be found on the Special:All-pages) and I put a link on the Personal Projects page. Not trying to spam, just put the info where it would logically go. I think Wikis are great, like blogging software is great, but you have to have a logical way of consuming the information - AND you have to have something to say or it will ultimately be useless. Right now wiki.monkeyfilter has neither. Hopefully that will change?
  • It would be good if we sorted things by master pages. I did this for the in-jokes page. Then we could have a master-master page - a page listing all of the master pages to explore (Online CD exchange, Meet Up pages, User pages listed, In-Jokes, Computer Help, etc). People could still see what was new by the recently changed page. As for the personal projects - either thet should all be listed on the personal projects page (in what order - I put my addition at the bottom out of politeness, so I was a bit annoyed to see newer additions at the top. But if newer at the top makes more sense, then I will move my addition up), or all have their own page, not some having their own page and not others.
  • Yeah, that at the top thing pissed me off too (cos that was my place!)
  • Okay, if this is a trend: The Charlotte Project - fuzzy photos of not very interesting lives (though occassionally there is drama when tea or coffee is drunk). (not actually mine, but close enough to be a quasi self-link) (I changed the order on the projects page, as chimaera also put his/her music at the bottom)
  • . . .so I was a bit annoyed to see newer additions at the top. That's were newer additions normally go -kinda like the latest blog entry goes at the top. It's also the way the directions state to do things on the Community Portal page.
  • HEY EVERYBODY, I think mecurious has a wiki too! Call it a hunch! Captain Killjoy, the obvious explanation of The Point is to have a supplementary spot for information about Monkeyfilter and associated activities, without #1 having to code separate pages for each. It doesn't have to be the site that slays the web; it's a supplement to this site. It can develop in other directions, but does it NEED to be more than that? I don't think it does. (And we get it. We really, really, really, really get it. Okay?)
  • By the way, if you have a web host (or server) the software running WikiPedia, wiki.monkeyfilter, StormWiki, EvoWiki and lots of other sites is the free OpenSource MediaWiki software and it is soooper-simple to set up if you have a MySQL database assigned to you. Figuring out how you want to set things up and creating the basic pages is the hardest part, but due to the open nature of Wikis you can basically copy/paste and modify code from other more mature Wikis (like EvoWiki. There is also a great mailing list for MediaWiki support
  • I was speaking for myself, Wurwilf. You seem to be speaking for everybody. I'm not quite sure how you can be that omniscient. : ) (Don't understand people who are apparently threatened by additional information.) ***shrugs***
  • It's not the additional information, it's the my-wiki-rox0rz-urz-sux0rz-n00b bashing. And please, you're bashing me based on one "we"? Can you get any more literal? My, oh, my. Oh dear, you seem to have a colon followed by a close parenthesis, but there is no opening parenthesis preceding it. Clearly, sir, you are not in complete control of your keyboard and must have it repaired by a professional at once.
  • it's the my-wiki-rox0rz-urz-sux0rz-n00b bashing Well, that was not my intention in posting. Apologies to all (and particularly tracicle) if it came off that way.
  • You people are just upset that you don't have a top trump card.
  • You just came on a bit strong with the 'look at my storm thingy' business. We'd all like to shout our projects from the rooftops, but try not to. Apology accepted over here. (And I do have a Top trump card...)
  • Understood, no more from me.
  • *Boomp* *Bap* *Uh-Boomp* *Boomp* *Bap* *Boomp* *Bap* *Uh-Boomp* *Boomp* *Bap* wwiki! wiki! wiki! wiki! Awww yeah - y'all rollin' wit Da Simienz . . . Y'all got bananas in tha Howze?! Yyyeeeah! . . unh! . . unh! Yeah you can get wit Ook Or you can get wit Eek You can get wit Ook Or you can get wit Eek- wik! Wik! wiki! wik! Wikiwiki!okay I'll stop . . sorry . . sorry
  • Hey Wurwilf, come back - you rock like Yoda!
  • Stupid dumb top trump cards!!! Who wants one anyway?!! *runs away sobbing*
  • I meant on this topic. YEARGH, everything I say misses the mark. I'm a walking SNL sketch.
  • The main reason for putting personal projects at the top, not the bottom, is to give everyone a chance at equal exposure. Think of it as short-ish-term advertising that'll move down the page as new projects come up. There's also the user personal pages (just as there is on MoFi) for linking to personal stuff. Although I don't know if he's around MoFi right now, fuyu deserves a big thanks for all the little things he's done to make the wiki more usable. Note to self: make blown-up Europe map next.
  • *eeep! Monkeybashi is gonna blow up Europe . . . must think . . . must stop the evil plan!*
  • I liked mercurious comments, at least...
  • I'm fine with all the personal projects being in reverse date order, just as long as it's either one or the other (rather than half the people adding at the bottom and half at the top). So I've reversed that now. Thanks for the bit on how to do the signature - my only problem is that I seem to have been catgorised by the wiki as "Jb", when my username here is "jb" (and yes, capitols do annoy me :) Is there anyway to change, or should I just start a new membership at the wiki?
  • It called me Dng, too
  • Also, what is the policy on posting other peoples stuff from the personal projects page on here?
  • Mediawiki does capitalize the first letter of EVERYTHING. Don't know any way around that one unless it allows you to use underscore characters first (like _jb). Never tried it so can't say.
  • jb, it thinks I'm Beeswacky, which is not what I told it. It is a Capitalization Tyrant! Bring your pitchforks and pine torches! We storm the castle at midnight!
  • Alright, I admit, I'm happy that it calls me Wendell. It makes me feel like a growed-up.
  • Even from quasi-n00bdom, this place rocks. Can't wait to see the collaborative spirit and ample silliness of the main site spreading. and ))) , petebest in da house!
  • Shyeeet, put yer personal projects where you like. Mine's been there for weeks anyhoo.
  • Hey look, a wiki! Remember the Neverending Story? (Ah-ah-ah, ah-ah-ahhhh, now the song is stuck in my head...)
  • WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIKKKKKKKKIIIIIIIII! Also in complete disregard for the above comments relating to personal project linking I have created a new category (with the blessing of #1) called Projects by Monkeys. Knock yourselves out telling us about your projects.
  • Wow, we have a wiki? Why didn't anyone tell me?
  • We don't really have wiki. They tell us that so we'll go off hunting for it, and they can talk about us while we're gone.
