Curious Funky Monkey Jorge Is there some way to identify ourselves on a P2P to other monkeys on the same site? You'd have to be able to search somebody by their user name, I'd think. Which I can't seem to be able to find on Ares. *grump*

If that's not on, maybe if we each had our own ridiculously obscure song in our share files that would pop when searched, and that individual song was known, as well as that monkey's username, then we could cruise the music files of said monkeys with the 'from same user' function. Hope this isn't a really silly question.

  • I have no idea what P2P means. I have no idea what Ares is. However, I do know some really obscure songs: Jet Pilot by Bob Dylan.
  • Whoa...apparently System of a Down also does a song called Jet Pilot. p2p is a peer to peer file-sharing network used by evil downloaders destroying the fabric of Western Society; Ares is one of many free p2p applications you use to get at those files in some kind of organized manner.
  • There's a program, called Waste though I'll imagine there is others, that allows for small groups of people to safely share amongst themselves. Basically making a small media/file collective. No MPAA, no RIAA, no record labels seeding bad files... And, it's all encoded too apparently. I'd be game for opening up my library, though I think Waste limited itself to 30 users.   • Moneyjane, Sourceforge is hell to download from and only because you have to sort through every possible means of downloading/compression/version/whatever. Find your operating system, then look for the most recent binary. Unless of course you're on Linux and really feel like compiling your own.
  • I have mine running. There was an option for creating a network name, but I'm not sure what benefit it would give. When I chose "monkeyfilter" it flashed warnings about how potentially limiting it might be. So, I didn't specify one.   • What about soulseek? I use it along with some members of another website and it works fine, people set up rooms (like a monkeyfilter room) and you can choose who you share with, so if you only want to share with fellow monkeys, they are the only ones you have to.

  • and i worked out how to create a monkeyfilter soulseek room. it's called 'monkeyfilter'. how surprising. WASTE is tricky. I need to fiddle more i think...
  • I'm open for sharing but I may need some more technical Monkeys to help me get set up. The only thing that I've mastered is Limewire. I'll try setting up SoulSeek and Waste tonight.
  • If you're looking for good music, Soulseek is the place. Maybe the meeting room is the best way to go. I don't know anything about Waste but the other popular private file sharing service is Direct Connect .
  • Just realized i didn't answer the original question, mj. On many P2P services, not all users are reachable from each other, which is why having a unique user name or a secret obscure song won't work all the time, unfortunately.

  • wtf do we do now? am i supposed to enter all your public keys in or something? seems that should be automatic if i know your username. do we all need to enter the same chatroom, or connect to a server or something? (re waste. soulseek won't connect to the network. not sure why, i think it's the wireless router.)

  • js - try soulseeX. I haven't used it myself, but I've friends who do. The server's been up and down a bit recently, but if you're looking for obscure music, it's worth it.

  • I went to bed immediately after posting last night. I'll give both waste and ssk (which has decided to connect to the server after all) a shot tonight. Expect a #monkeyfilter channel to pop up on ssk around 6PM est if it doesn't already exist.

  • There's a monkeyfilter room now. Sorry I was late- I was building a table and planting vegetables. I think the room goes away if no one's in it, but anyone can create one- right click the room list and create one named monkeyfilter. One of these days we'll manage to coordinate at least 2 monkeys into a room at the same time. I'm not giving up!

  • I should be able to participate tonight... past few nights have been proper fucked. I did notice (with what little downloading off soulseek I've done) that it can be painfully slow. I've ended up just sending the files to people via gmail... so maybe that can be an option for monkeys too?
  • I was in there last night with another monkey. It worked well. You share the folder(s) containing the perfectly legal files. You can set it so only people on your userlist can see them. Then you go into the monkeyfilter room and add the monkeys there to your userlist. And that's it for setup. There was one issue though, you may not be able to see the monkeyfilter room in the list, even if it does exist. I think you can right-click the room list and select 'join room' and then just type it in. If it's not there, create one like I said above. It runs fine in the background, and I'll be idling in the room a bit tonight, but we need some coordination because we have to add each other to our userlists.
