Murderous George. Someone stole my dog today. She was tied up outside the Rite-Aid at Sunset and Fairfax in Los Angeles for ten minutes at three o'clock and when I came out she was gone. She's thirteen years old, she can't walk far.

I can't keep waiting for metafilter's askme to load - I don't have DSL and need to get offline in case someone calls in response to the flyers I put up. I need help from LA monkeys. I made a police report, I phoned shelters and faxed one of them her picture. I put up flyers offering a reward, and I think I know who took her - just a random homeless guy, but I think I know who. I don't have a car. Is there anyone in West Hollywood who can help me print out color photos of my girl and post them around? I just don't know anyone here. Sorry for this, I'm desperate.

  • Reach out to other homeless people in the area, they know more about what goes on in their community than you'd think. If your hunch is right, one of them will have seen this individual with the dog.
  • That's exactly what happened. My old girl is back home now. Tracy, you can delete this thread. She was found a little after midnight and she's home safe. She seems okay, tho exhausted. That was the worst nine hours I've lived thru in years. And I'm going to find the motherfucker who took her and stomp his head into the ground.
  • Glad you found your friend.
  • Your dog is safe, best not to sully your kharma stomping on some asshole who desperately deserves it. Sounds like life is kicking his ass for you.
  • I'm a very nice person - in deeds, tho not always in words. I don't care about kharma so much as I care about whether my actions square with my conscience. You know, the whole "can you sleep at night?" thing. My dog is back, and we'll sleep fine. But if I ever see this motherfucker I will tear his head from his neck. You know why justice is meted out by the state and not by the mob? I found out tonight. Because the mob will kill. This is just my dog. Imagine if it was my child?
  • I would seriously fuck anybody up if they did that to me Losing your dog, especially like that, is a very traumatic experience.
  • I just let her out to pee - we live on the second floor - and she was so stiff and uncomfortable coming down the stairs. She's never been that way before. She was found eight very long blocks away - I never walk her more than two blocks. If whoever took her has shortened her life, oh yeah, I will try to kill him.
  • Sorry this happened, gf. Was your suspicion confirmed regarding who took him? I'd be wary of making enemies of people who spend more time around the outskirts of your home than you do. I'm very conscious of the fact that my pup is an easier target than I am.
  • Glad your dog is back, Goofyfoot.
  • goofy, so sorry to hear of your crisis! and so glad your beloved is back with you. here in d.c. i've heard of a spate of dogs being untied and taken from in front of starbucks' shops. i STRONGLY advise you to NEVER EVER EVER AGAIN tie your dog up outside ANYWHERE. it's way too dangerous for many reasons: someone can take her, another dog can come along and attack her, she could come untied and wander into traffic, she could be injured by a bicyclist/skateboarder etc... please, just don't ever do it again. it's not a good idea. your doggie counts on you to keep her safe. i'm glad she's back!
  • I like the godfuckingdamnit.com. Another online community has something similar, called Anonymous Vent. SideDish, the thing is, in San Francisco, no-one would do this. Yeah, so I'm not there anymore, I'm here. And I very rarely have tied her up where I can't keep an eye on her. Today I got stuck in a line - I felt wierd about not being able to see her, but if I followed all my wierd feelings I'd chase my tail like a cat on acid. That said it's pure luck that I got her back, and she'll never be out of my sight again. She's sacked out on my bed with her little football. She's exhausted.
  • Sorry about what happened to your dog. I myself live at Melrose and Cresent Heights. If you need help like this in the future, feel free to email me at the address listed on my profile page.
  • goofyfoot: I'm so glad you got your doggy back! A few years ago, my dog was stolen out of my back yard (he was a non-altered Springer -- we never had him fixed because he was really my uncle's dog, but while my uncle couldn't take care of him we did... for years.). We knew he didn't run away because he was too scared to leave the yard. One time the gate was accidentally left open and he just sat there staring at it until we closed it. Anyway, we never got him back and it was awful. So I'm glad your dog came back!
  • I understand your rage, gf. When we lived in Los Feliz, a woman stold my cat. Luckily one of her neighbors tipped us off after seeing one of our flyers. Grrr, just thinking about it all these years later, I still want to throttle her.... Anyway, glad you got your pup back. Hope she's feeling better this morning.
  • What's odd is Brandy is a hundred-pound pit-bull cross. She looks like she'd eat your head with one chomp. But she's a sweetheart. My other dog, Sophie, who died last year aged fifteen or so (Brandy's 13), looked like a sweet, sort of demure fluffy pup, but if she wasn't near me and you tried to get close to her, whoops, there goes your ass. See that? You didn't even feel it! There it goes!
  • This is just my dog. Imagine if it was my child? Dogs are the new children.
  • Okee doke.
  • MonkeyFilter- Whoops, there goes your ass. Glad you got your dog back. Lucky for me, my terrier is so fucking annoying that if anyone stole him, they'd probably bring him back after listening to him bark at the TV (and spraying it with saliva in the process) for 45 minutes straight.
  • Oh I'm so glad you got her back. Some people stole my Theo once at the park - it was early in the morning, he was off leash, he comes immediately when whistled for - and this FUCKING pair of ASSHOLE drug addicted hippies took him. They had to be holding him tightly for him not to bark or come to me, grrrrrrr. Fortunately I had been all over the park freaking out and told people and this nice guy saw the couple leaving with Theo & stopped them - he completely saved my life, I will love him forever. I've heard that "people" will sometimes take dogs & then watch for the flyers in order to collect the reward money - EVIL ASSHOLES!!!!
  • I'm glad to hear things have resolved, goofy. It sucks that someone did that. We're doing a meetup/potluck thing tonight if you want to come. Email me (it's in my profile) if you're interested and can send details.
  • goofyfoot, I'm glad you got your dog back so quickly, Hope you're both revovered from the ordeal now.
  • glad there was a good resolution, goofy.
  • STRONGLY advise you to NEVER EVER EVER AGAIN tie your dog up outside ANYWHERE. it's way too dangerous for many reasons: someone can take her, another dog can come along and attack her, she could come untied and wander into traffic, she could be injured by a bicyclist/skateboarder etc... Somebody could feel sorry for the poor dog who's been yoked to a post on the sidewalk. In the "enlightened" SF Bay Area I'd see it all over all the time: trendoid bird-brains were always tying purebred status-symbols to whatever was handy, then going inside for latte for several hours; some assholes would even leave them waterless and tied in the sun during heatwaves and then get upset if they happen to notice me giving their pooch water. "Hey! Quit messing with my dog!" Talk about wanting to stomp somebody's head in. And yes, I do mean I actually saw people tie their dog on the street for HOURS. You notice a lot things like that when you're hanging out on the street smoking cigars in the shade. On the other hand, the homeless street kids usually travelled in packs or at least in pairs, so there'd be somebody to sit with their funny-looking mutts outside; a few times kids who happened not to have a friend along would ask people they saw around all the time, like me, to dog sit while s/he had to go inside. "And here's her water bowl."
  • Dog Thieves should be spayed or neutuered. Without anasthetic.
  • What's odd is Brandy is a hundred-pound pit-bull cross. She looks like she'd eat your head with one chomp. Whoever took your dog is either fearless or deranged. Glad that she's back with you.
  • Thanks for all your good wishes. Brandydog's pretty stiff - she is just too old to be made to walk as far as she did - and she's having a tougher time managing the stairs. PY and mygothlaundry, whoever took my dog had nothing to lose. Not a thing. That's what happens when people have no stake whatsoever in civil society. They get cut out, and why should they respect the rules? She was taken by one homeless guy and found in the company of another. Maybe someone wanted a reward. If they weren't destitute and hopeless, this wouldn't have happened. Y'all don't need the sermon, I know. I should relate - especially to Squidranch, who lives sorta vaguely in my same neighborhood - that everyone here in West Hollywood was exceptionally kind (when I took down the flyers my dad and I had put up, strangers stopped me and said, "Did you get your dog back?" and the manager of the store from whence she was stolen called me because he was so concerned [or maybe because I was a pretty damsel in distress, but I'll count on his pure motives]) - here's how she was found: A friend of my roommate's, who had spent the evening at our place, happened to be driving east on Sunset at midnight. She espied a dog who looked like my girl with some homeless guy. Friend of roommate stopped her car, got out, took my girl, siad, "That's my friend's dog!", loaded her into her truck, and came right back to us (roommate and I were at the Kinko's making color copies of Brandy's photo). Which I think is pretty fucking miraculous. What are the odds? My and Brandy's heroine apparently couldn't sleep that night, she was so pumped up about what she'd done. I hope she remembers it all her life. [I will.] Being valiant is a wonderful, wonderful feeling. Has there been a Curious George about when monkeys last got to feel valiant? I think it would be a fine post.
  • Perhaps looking for a reward could have been a motivation, or the guy could have just been lonely and stupid. My bets are on lonely and stupid. Glad you got your dog back. But about stomping the guys head -- rethink that. You really shouldn't do anything which you may regret later.
  • But you could pour a bucket of Brandy "wine" on his shoes. Glad you found your special buddy
  • I want to stomp the guy's head. She used to be able to do a quarter mile pretty easily, and a half mile, with some clicking and use of her favorite words, without any real worry, but she can barely make it a half block now. She's gulping water crazily and has become incontinent. She never peed in the house before. I want to find the fucker who took her and put his head into a curb and scream that he took years off her life. She doesn't have years to spare! She's a big thriteen-year-old dog! If she can't hold her water, or make it down the stairs, I have to put her down! And I don't want to put my girl down. She was fine. Fine! Slow, but fine. Now she's much slower, has a tough time with the stairs, and needs to pee more often than I can let her out. Motherfuck.
  • Give her a little time, goofy, she's had a scare. It won't be long.
  • Goofy, I'm with Wolof, give her some more time. Also, perhaps a visit to the vet is in order for an assist in getting her back to her old self? Poor old girl.
  • I agree ... old dogs take time to recover. Give her another day or so, let her relax a bit, then bring her into the vet for a checkup. No curb-stomping the homeless, please! Although I understand your anger, I really do.
  • And most of all, chill out ... Brandy can probably sense your anger, and it's stressing her out. Not doing either of you any good.
  • You relax. I'll do the stomping for ya.
  • How's the pup doing now? Update?
  • I second the update request.
  • BlueHorse and minda25, see the latter part of this thread.
  • Oh, my. I wish I'd paid more attention; not much to say at this late a date (and after a misstep such as mine above). And it looks like BlueHorse was more on the up & up than I - she's got a comment in that thread from April. *says a prayer for Brandy dog & goofyfoot*
