So the NHL season is canceled. Who cares? With video games and other exciting options, that reptile in your brain that wants blood can be sated without watching sports. Whether or not video games lead to violence is a moot point. The question is what giant falls next: The NFL? Why pay players? Who needs the real thing when we got game?
  • Perhaps someone can clear this up for me. In the news, I've seen this cancellation business mentioned with reference to cities in both Canada and the US, and yet all the reports have studiously avoided mentioning a country, sticking to "North America". So... to which nation does the National Hockey League pertain? Or is "National" no more instructive than the "World" of the World Series? Curious monkeys want to know!
  • The National Hockey League is headquartered in New York City, making it an American entity. Six of it's thirty member teams are Canadian. The union, the NHLPA, is headquartered in Toronto, making it a Canadian entity. I'm pretty sure I still haven't answered your question.
  • Thanks, rocket88. I get the feeling that that's as close to an answer as I'm ever going to get.
  • Who cares? You got that right.
  • Wait...we got HOCKEY here?
  • Yeah.. well just wait until EA (publishers of Madden) buy up all the rights to NHL, NBA, NASCAR, PGA, WNBA, Little League, Pro-Circuit, Formula 1, OTB, MLB, NCAA, KFC, BBQ, XYZ, PCP, LSD.... *sigh*
  • Coming soon! Online EX-Treme BBQ Action! Brought to you by EA Sports.
  • Who cares? Fans care. Sports bar owners care. Waitresses losing tips care. People renting parking around the arenas care. Sports memorabilia stores care. Cities losing revenue care. Players that lost a year on their already short careers care. The list goes on... I can't tell if your post is serious or not. I hope not. I've never watch any sport to sate any blood lust I might have. The blood and violence that sometime come out of a sport is just a byproduct of too many aggressive people being in close quarters. It's certainly not the goal. Hockey is a great game. It's a shame the players and the owners couldn't find a compromise.
  • Casinos care.
  • MonkeyFilter: Wait...we got HOCKEY here?
  • Let's see. Canada's up to what, now, just over 30 million? 500 emails/letters/phone calls "flooded" the CBC with complaints about this bitter turn of events. That sounds about right.
  • I don't know about the video games. I bought a copy of NHL 2006, but it seems much harder than the older versions were. I've tried every cheat code I can find online but I still can't get my players into the damn building...
