acid trip Gumby cartoons ---made by the art collective PaperRad in Providence, RI.
  • My eyes hurt
  • *puts on crash helmet, dives into trench, awaits banhammer in three...two...*
  • Why?
  • Two posts in one day, a self link (see previous) and un-ironic shouting on on the sidebar? Though I'm sure that's not enough to get anyone creamed, maybe you should read our FAQ more closely before doing anything else on Monkeyfilter today, FAT BLOB.
  • Ye gots sum learnin' ta do, boy! *breaks switch off nearby tree*
  • Damn noobs.
  • Um...despite his previous post being a self-link, this one being sorta quite crappy, and his back-to-back posts, why was he banned so harshly? He did apologize in the first post. Just wondering. Please, Hammer, don't hurt 'em.
  • Sorry, shoulda posted that in your blog.
  • I probably know those fuckers, they probably go to RISD.
  • Because it's written quite plainly at the top of the posting page, as well as in the FAQ and guidelines which I should expect people to read at least once, that self-linking isn't allowed. On top of that, he posted twice in one day, which isn't so much a rule but jeez, some respect for the guidelines would be nice. There's been a string of self-links, deliberate bad posts (Chuck Norris being the prime example) and generally crappy posts lately and I'm going for low-tolerance until it gets better.
  • Tracicle, as a member of Monkeyfilter, I must tell you that I in fact enjoyed the chuck norris post.
  • I'm going for low-tolerance until it gets better Yay for authoritarian crackdowns! Could a low tolerance for offensively bad grammar, spelling and layout in FPPs be included in this? Pretty please? /moan
  • I'm glad I missed all the hubbub. That said, what's the Chuck Norris post thing? That Gumby nonsense was just plain ugly.
  • How come Monkeyfilter will suffer fools who will, say, shit all over serious threads, say they know they're being obnoxious asses, that they don't care and would leave for Metafilter forever if they weren't so lazy aren't even told to fuck off...and yet someone who shows a minor kind of rudeness (that every site with a membership ever in the history of the internet has had to indure at least once) needs to be banned? Especially condering that maybe the second post was meant to make up for the first. Where is this Monkeyfilter hospitality I hear so much about?
  • A valid question.
  • In FAT BLOB's defense, he did apologize in the other thread and cited his own carelessness in reading the FAQ. I understand the no-tolerance, especially given the storm of crap FPPs lately (and yes, I'm working on rolling my own), but FWIW, I think the bastard deserves a second chance (if he wants it, that is). Seems that he didn't take the time to read the not-so-fine print, and made an honest, dickbrained mistake. I for one am willing to forgive. As to the lack of fuck-yous, it's done out of a desire to try to ignore the offenders in the hope that they'll get tired of getting no response and fuck off on their own. Clearly, it's not working as well as we'd hoped. We're avoiding flames, but at what cost, I don't know. What I do know is that path was hurt badly enough to walk out in tears, and I for one am very fucking pissed off about it. Very. Fucking. PISSED OFF.
  • (Fourth attempt lucky:) I'm not perfect, it's completely and utterly impossible to be a perfect admin. I also have a life outside of MoFi, which includes a toddler and pregnancy, and between those three things I occasionally get annoyed when I have to do a lot of unnecessary busywork such as removing posts that suck or that don't follow the guidelines. I get more annoyed when I've made an effort to make those guidelines as clear as I possibly can, and yet people conveniently overlook them to post self-links, then apologise retroactively. Fat Blob can contact me to get his account reinstated. As for the apparent lack of hospitality, I'm impressed that a single thread out of seven thousand is enough to make you comment so, Fedora. I should imagine that 95% of MoFi's threads look pretty damn hospitable (path's current situation aside for now). ...say they know they're being obnoxious asses, that they don't care and would leave for Metafilter forever if they weren't so lazy aren't even told to fuck off... See, I have no clue who you're talking about here.
  • See, I have no clue who you're talking about here. Yes! Name names!
  • I'm behind tracicle on this one ... sometimes you just have to draw a line, if nothing else then to remind people that the guidelines are there for a reason. I, for one, see no problem with folks getting their knuckles rapped once in a while. It's the price you pay keeping such a large community from becoming complete chaos. And I don't buy FAT BLOB's apology anyway; it's common sense to read guidelines before posting, never mind shouting in the sidebar. But that's just me, I'm a little less tolerant of twits. It's a good thing I don't run my own community weblog. What happened with path? I missed that one.
  • A couple of people left over the "pro-anorexia" thread, after it turned into something of a "boy, are obese people disgusting!" thread. It was their choice to leave, it was and is sad to see them go, and I hope those involved have figured out a way to tone down the insensitive comments so that those that left may be comfortable returning. (Likewise the "Man, old people shouldn't try to be hip!" thread - there's been an influx of those sort of comments lately that's hopefully just a phase. A little more thought before commenting might be nice sometimes.)
  • Thanks Monkeybashi ... man, it sucks when good folks are driven out by people acting like dipshits. I often wonder about my own wisecracks, and hope that people are taking them in the spirit intended.
  • Sorry tracicle, my comment was ruder than it needed to be. And I just went back to the thread I was thinking of and found that plenty of people told the person I'm thinking of to fuck off. I was just impressed that the person was not banned for some troll-like and blatantly bridge-burning behavior. I won't link the thread here, but if you want to see it tracicle I'll send it to you. It just appears to me that Monkeyfilter tries too hard to prove its such a nice place at times and at others seems intolerant of some pretty minor infractions, like with the faceman self-link debacle. He was obnoxious, but I don't know why there needed to be any more reaction that the pile-on that followed.
  • Thanks, Fedora. I'd like to see that link sometime - can't think of it right now. I was, I admit, in a really crappy mood yesterday (I'm sick, so is the offspring, and that makes life harder all round...and about that time my sister turned up asking for help with her homework) so I know I reacted more harshly than I might otherwise. I decided ages ago that I didn't want to be monitoring MoFi all the time for bad behaviour (by whatever definition). I get irritated on Mefi when comments are removed without notice and it can seem really arbitrary - one person gets away with murder while another is banned for a week. I didn't want to risk being as arbitrary (and having to justify my actions to everyone when I've banned someone over something minor, just like this) and decided instead to let everything sort itself out, which it generally does, and I only really step in on the blatantly objectionable stuff, like angry modem's post a few months ago. But then, when I'm in a bad mood and there's crap flying everywhere and people quitting and everything just seems to be spiralling quickly out of control, this is what happens. So there you go. Admins gone wild.
  • Totally understandable. I didn't know about the path situation when I commented; I would have put my complaint differently.
