The Depression Era Cultural Landscape: UVA has put an incredible museum of 1930's culture online. They have comics: including Krazy Kat, SuperMan and Buck Rogers; radio broadcasts: including Jack Benny, and The Lone Ranger; and film clips: including Duck Soup, The Thin Man, and Citizen Kane plus documentaries of the era.
  • Sorry, the one link I did not test prior to posting seems not to work - no Citizen Kane for you.
  • Of course I have also left out one important link and since I must make that correction it only pays to atone with another link in the museum to some interesting workds by Grant Wood. I think I have said enough...I'll shut-up now.
  • ))) Thanks caddis. I really enjoyed this.
  • Excellent stuff here, caddis! Especially the Krazy Kat!!! Thanks.
  • I really enjoyed the pictures of working life. Thanks caddis.
  • For some reason the 30's fascinate me. Thanks Caddis, good linkys.
  • michael chabon's "the amazing adventures of cavalier & clay" depicts this era quite effectively.
  • Krazy Kat is awesome! I love the diction of Officer Pup and Ignatz. Like to see someone try that these days: "Wretch! I see you bear no brick--can it be that you are innocent of evil intent today? Tell me!" "Brick have I none, my dear Kop--but may I with humility pray that you lay your pretty eye upon my new hat?" [Officer Pup instructs Ignatz to put on his hat] "Must I?" "Indeed you must, and pronto too--and see that you journey to parts remote and your destination be distant!" EAT IT, Cathy!
  • More Krazy Kat. Have just listened to a radio programme about George Herriman. If you're quick it's here on BBC Listen Again.
