Size matters. Really.
  • Nonoxynol-9, a widely used spermicide, came under scrutiny in 2001 when a report from the World Health Organization warned that if used frequently, it may cause vaginal irritation and might increase the risk of contracting HIV. Oh. Shit.
  • Natural-Family-Planners who came to my high school told us that condoms work 85% of the time.
  • Natural-Family-Planners who came to my high school told us that condoms work 85% of the time. That's because natural-family-planners are often so stupid that they do not know how to properly apply one.
  • Glad to see the little "Did you know..." box at the bottom. Not to politically derail the thread, but I don't understand how you can willingly politicize something like this and potentially put people at risk.
  • Somebody is paid money to test condoms. That sounds like a dream job.
  • MCT, I don't understand it either. Mare thanks for the link, more info gathered for my fight to educate the kids in my area. I am sometimes frustrated at the lack of communication between the kids and their parents, about what is safe and what is not. I may be stepping on some parents toes by trying to educate the kids here, but I really don't care. If I can get through to one kid it is worth the headaches.
  • Right-o, MCT. Scary to think that the Centre for Disease Control's advice is the same as the Vatican's. The docs at CDC are supposed to be the world's experts, and they're this out of touch with what's actually happening in society? Scary, scary shit.
  • I'm actually allergic to the spermacide mentioned. (Or, I guess, it's just an irritant, as mentioned in the article?)
  • Man, those Planned Parenthood condoms really got some bad ratings. In fact it kind of turns their name into a pun.
  • The CDC docs have nothing to do with it, Captain. Dissapointing to see the top slots filled by the brands I find least comfortable (Durex, Trojan).
  • Holy hell. I read about that nonoxynol-9 just now. Recently I had been using a new brand of condoms from trojan that had spermicidals on them. Shortly after I started getting a rash in my.... ahem.... private regions, and so did the girl I was with. I had already figured it was the condoms causing that, but at least now I know what to look out for. Thank you for this link!

  • damn that double clickity clackity
  • LoopyG: I'd think you would have learned the first time.
  • Perhaps, first and second times were rather close together.
  • For my own personal protection, I use the infield tarp from a local minor league baseball team.
  • For my own personal protection, both me and my partner have been tested for STDs (both before and during our relationship), and we don't sleep with other people.
  • js: that's the best possible scenerio, and the one I usually do my very best to follow. However, sometimes you just need a condom.
  • You know, js, you'd be safer if you didn't sleep with each other, either!
  • Anything is better than using the same toothbrush.
  • Does anyone else think that the low success rates of various kinds of birth-control methods is due to widespread LYING??? I mean, you're in a position where you don't want to admit that you didn't USE it -- you're a teen, you're cheating, you're sleeping around -- so of course you report that "the condom tore", "the pill is only ___% effective", etc. Not "I forgot" (or decided against) using it just this one time.
