Curious George - Help with Excel. I'm trying to create hyperlinks in my Excel spreadsheet and am getting errors.

I have 2100 images on the same drive as my spreadsheet and am hyperlinking them one by one. (Yeah, lucky me.) For seemingly no reason, when I click on some of the links I get the error message "Cannot open the specified file." All the files are JPGs and are roughly the same size. I've tried deleting the link and re-linking from scratch, but to no avail. What is going on here? And more importantly, how do I fix it?

  • Which version of Excel are you working with, and are you comfortable with scripting? VBA will perform the steps of generating hyperlinks on all of these files for you... And, if you're lucky the jpg's have a descriptive name which will correspond to the row "record" which describes the jpg. The right name on the jpg means you can script the entire operation without having to manually view each one to determine which row should own the hyperlink. We need more info., then we may be able to steer you in the right direction.
  • why don't you do something like picasa > export as web page > import into excel and all the linking will be done for you . . .
  • Never mind, figured it out. The path was too long for Excel's liking. I shorted the name of some of my folders and it worked fine. Thanks for the suggestions! Tracicle, you can delete this post if you want.
