I dunno. Some of the costumes look quite good. The Amidala one was cute. Probably what she would have looked like after two kids and if she'd had a peaceful beauracratic life.
Yeah, I thought some of those costumes were pretty good too... although I thought the Storm Trooper/American flag combination was... problematic and ambiguous. I suspect the wearer ended up sending quite a different message from the one originally envisaged.

Heh, if he was a Democrat, maybe not. *wink*
What the hell was that purple thing?
Women will get sterile just looking at you.
Am I supposed to care?
Amidala girl looks gorgeous. Wish I had the skills and resources to make anime costumes of that caliber.
Yep, the characters in the photos are lame... but, even lamer is the guy who put this on his live journal with the statement
"These are all pictures from a Star Wars
convention from a site my co-worker decided
would be a good idea to share with me. Now, I
share with you."
So..bottom line..he didn't find the site, he didn't take the pictures, he probably doesn't have rights to the pictures, the best he could do were the snarky comments....
I sense a disturbance in the force...
Oh, come on. Yes, the guy is making fun of arguably talented people who didn't give permission. But 'Sith of the Dance'? Was I the only one in tears over that?
The photos without the captions would have made me happier.
Though I must admit that he did break new ground by making fun of overweight people.
The funny ones are so because of the photos (love the Jedi with a Gap shopping bag); his comments add little. He doesn't even link to the site from which he took the goods.
Also. People with an active online journal with a huge friends list have no business whatsoever insinuating that others have no life. Their journals are practically fandoms of themselves.
On preview: What bernockle said.
Sure, they're geeks. And it's fun to laugh at geeks, especially when they put a lot of work into their geeky hobbies. But when it comes to geeky hobbies, I have a lot more respect for the people in the photos than for some wise-ass with an online journal, rehashing the Best of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog.
That being said, the Ralph Fiennes pic made me giggle. Which, I suppose, means I'm more accepting of knocking down celebrities than my fellow nerds.
Oh holy fuck. Why do you people hate funny so much?
I still wanna see Trekkies 2. The first one was a hoot.
"You Star Wars dorks are beneath me," he screams to his adoring LiveJournal.
Of course, I'm commenting here... So what does that make me?
It makes you a ziploc bag full of pulsating sex.
I think these people are cool. Much cooler than the guy and his feeble commentary.
Did you notice that the black guys are R. Kelly and L.L. Cool j? What a rapier wit!
(my disdain for Krautboy's comments is in no way reflective of my feelings for the MoFi post, which I enjoyed thoroughly. And Hutta: I love the funny. I got bored of the "making fun of dorks" pretty early though. Of course, BEING a dork might've had something to do with it. But still.)
OH! I lmost forgot: +1 banana for Rodgerd for the Charles De Mar.
The people who bitch like this are always the first to line up drooling when a hot fangirl puts on the spandex (or in my fandom, the kitty ears). In other words, it's great to have fun, as long as you're pretty. Nice! Really nice.
Some of these weren't bad, and the GAP thing? Bitch, please. You have to walk around a convention all day. You pick things up along the way. You need to carry them. It's very simple. That was a candid shot and not a posed shot that would involve putting away all the stuff that isn't part of the costume.
Eugh, basically, more of the same. OMG, how dare those ugly people enjoy their dorky habits and obscure the view of the pretty people enjoying the same dorky habits, which are like totally hott. Yawn. Next?
If you dress up like Star Wars/Star Trek characters and go out in public, chances are people are going to make fun of you. Asking them not to, imo, is just too much to ask. It's the same as someone with a 3 ft. tall orange mohawk and tribal tattoos on his forehead, chains dangling from his nose, and tattered denim clothes getting all huffy b/c the other people in the McDonalds or Dillards or wherever are staring.
It's fair enough to say that the guy's wit is lacking, or that he's a bigot (if warranted), or that he's no less ridiculous, but come on guys--it IS pretty funny.
Ooh, making of costumed fans at a con! How original and funny! I was waiting to hear whether the commentator's arms had gotten tired when he flew in from wherever to get to the con until I realized he'd lifted the photos from another site.
I didn't see the thigh-slappingness of it, but I'm a humorless fanninist.
Well, yes, some of the costumes are funny, but it doesn't make them idiots. The over-the-top ones were funny without the comments (as MsVader pointed out, the purple one was pretty weird). And this one really deserves a good caption (like -
Vader: You have two options: marriage or execution
Kneeling Guy: You call those options?
Crying girl: You said you were on the pill! Waaah!")
But this guy? What does he mean "Saving throw against homosexuality"? It should be saving throw VS...
krautboy's just being a pain in the ass.
Is that really Ralph Fiennes? o_O
MonkeyFilter: You pick things up along the way.
MonkeyFilter: No less ridiculous.
MonkeyFilter: A ziploc bag full of pulsating sex.
Funny is so hard to make universal, no one can tell anyone what is or isn't funny.
For *me* if it is mean-spirited, one sided AND dumb (I mean literally stupid, not lowbrow), particularly when the person on the business end of the joke isn't in on it, there's a pretty good chance that I'll be more grossed out than amused. YMMV.
Some of the comments were really funny... some were not.
Maybe I found them amusing because I have considered dressing up in costume to attend a convention. I know that if I saw a picture of myself in costume, I would laugh myself silly.
I've gone to cons before, and there is a kind of sense of comradery among the convention goers... hopefully, they all realize in the grand scheme of things, how silly their actions really are.
That's all I was saying, jim_t. The guy's captions generally aren't that funny, but many of the comments here seemed to be riled by the very idea that people would laugh at the con-costumers. My only point is that it's pretty unrealistic not to expect to get laughed at in such a situation--in fact, I'd be surprised if most of the people dressing up didn't revel in the silliness (at least I hope they do...).
Don't know about others, but I'm not riled at all. He mocks the nerds in mean spirit, so I mocks him in mean spirit. Others are free to mock me in whatever spirit they wish. Now everybody laugh!
... at "I mocks" and other assorted typos! I post on a public forum; I expect to be laughed at for my mistakes.
I don't know... somehow "These are all pictures from a Star Wars convention from a site my co-worker decided would be a good idea to share with me" sort of translated to "Hey, I went to a Star Wars convention but don't want to publicly admit it" to me.
He was spot on about the first Boba Fett... WTF... They're not as bad as Furries though... still pretty funny...
Ooooooh, Bearguy, you got all the best taglines!
But these must be said:
MonkeyFilter: revel in the silliness
MonkeyFilter: Now everybody laugh!
MonkeyFilter: They're not as bad as Furries though
A couple of the captions are funny, some are silly, some are mean.
Whatever turns your key.
/me is a costumer - I don't look like an anime character, so I can't do this myself, but I dress other people up. (They ask me to. They give me money to do this to them.) Having said that, I can laugh/cringe-laugh at some bad costuming. Now, some of this is bad costuming. And some of it is just "look at the nerds." Which would be brilliant, incisive, and original if it were 1976.
The other problem is that the commenting isn't very funny. You could be a lot more witty than this, as demonstrated in this thread. And lackluster "omg uglies" commenting is all over the internet; we need to laud that about as much as we need to laud every person who speaks in 1337 or quotes All Your Base.
Come on, people. This is a subject rich with absurdity, and you're falling flat. Is a little actual effort in your wiseassery too much to ask?
Least year at GenCon (a gaming convention, but still people do some costiming) we wound up sharing the downtown area with a major Colts game. It was kind of fun watching people in all blue with ropes of blue and silver beads and a team logo drawn on their cheeks looking funny at the guys in the Ghostbusters uniforms...
I dunno.. I sorta equate it to watching reruns of the A-Team or reading a Forgotten Realms book... shallow, unoriginal, and sophmoric, but still good for mindless entertainment.
Yes, these people are loser-geeks.
I mean, look how terrible their costumes are. If *I* were making a Boba Fett costume, I'd be sure to...
(insert geeky details)
And the A-Team was *never* good entertainment.
Damn those girls are ugly, jesus christ.
I for one believe that unattractive people shouldn't have self esteem. It makes me so damned limp when I see that.
I've always secretly wanted to have the money to blow on a storm trouper costume.
MonkeyFilter: Is a little actual effort in your wiseassery too much to ask?
MonkeyFilter: If *I* were making a Boba Fett costume, I'd be sure to...
I found some of the comments hilarious, but as others have already said, there was a lot of the 'OMG how are these people allowed out' variety, which smack of the bully mentality.
I forgot. Some would say there is a slightly delicious irony in the pile on of comments by LJ users (speaking as someone with an LJ and who once dressed up in an Elvis costume (not for fan reasons) for an entire weekend, including voting in the state election).
Not that into Star Wars, but think that making and wearing costumes can be a lot of fun. Anyone else here ever had a good time doing so at Halloween? I'm always in favor of anyone doing things they had fun doing as kids. More power to 'em!
It's kinda sad that costumes are on the way out. Here in New Orleans with Mardi Gras coming up next week, all of us locals avoid the French Quarter because it's all drunk frat boys with cameras now, and not interesting people in wonderful outfits so much anymore. *sigh*
Thanks, ActuallySettle. Few people are that honest.
fatou, that is so true. I got into anime-dork costuming in large part because there are precious few other opportunities to make really bizarre and interesting clothes outside Halloween. ...and assuming one doesn't know any drag queens, which I do not. I wish New Year's costume parties were more common than they are, or even, failing that, more Halloween events for adults. Something! It's a form of creativity that only a few people get to experience, and it's frustrating.
MonkeyFilter: It's a form of creativity that only a few people get to experience, and it's frustrating.
I'll be quiet. ;)
To be fair, ugly people don't have a right to be in public. And fat people in spandex probably should be laughed at. In fact, anyone who invests so much of their identity in fictional characters should probably be laughed at.
But anyone who goes out of their way to be mean to people should also be mocked mercilessly.
(The Gap bag was funny. And I would hope that upon seeing these photos at least a couple of the people in them would be able to laugh at themselves. Isn't part of the fun of dressing up like this knowing that it's goofy as hell and you're doing it anyway?)
Guess that's not the underline tag here...
Oh man! PY how could you miss this one?!?!?!
MonkeyFilter: ... shallow, unoriginal, and sophmoric, but still good for mindless entertainment.
So OBVIOUS and so RIGHT!!
Yes, BlueHorse, thanks for catching that one. And just because I want there to be no doubt...the taglines are pearls, in my view, and if I ever pilfer your words to create one it is because your words are delightful, in the best non-mocking sense of that word.
Errr, js, if they don't have a right to be in public, then why not mock them? The logic, it does not follow. If you're not going to grant full human rights to a group, then why bother being nice to them?
(Thank you, too. I swear one day I'm going to collect all the comments like this in a book with which to slug people who think I should like myself.)
PY, pearls from YOUR lips.
They just keep coming, don't they?
MonkeyFilter: ...the taglines are pearls.
I hope someone has the pity to shoot me if I ever get old, sick or disfigured in a car accident.
What do you think LiveJournal is for? I have multiple LJ accounts just in case I become too ugly to go out. No need for drastic measures.
It should be saving throw VS...krautboy's just being a pain in the ass. Is that really Ralph Fiennes? o_O
