MetaFilter is stumped! Curious George: I can't access Kingdom of Loathing and it's driving me batty.

For some reason, I can't get a connection. Every other website is fine. If I connect via my neighbor's wifi, it works sporadically. If I use my hosts file, it works sporadically. WinXP Home, with Firefox. What's happening?

  • works for me...
  • of course, you may have a redirect issue, as the actual url is: http://www2.kingdomofloathing.com/login.php
  • Me, as well... and I've WinXP Pro and using Firefox.
  • I am wondering if the "amandaudoff" who posted this question on MetaFilter might, in fact, be the very same "amandaudoff" who posted this question here. My perception knows no limits.
  • Actually, there are 3 KoL servers. When the regular server doesn't seem to be working, try either Server 2 or Server 3 .
  • I too had that very same thought bernockle... it could very well be the case... Watson! Get my cane! It's time this mystery be solved!
  • Nope. None of them work. It's the damndest thing. It doesn't work on any of the servers, using the IP address works sporadically and it doesn't work on IE or Firefox. Not to mention that it works for everyone else.
  • Is your neighbour using the same upstream ISP as you? Because what you're describing (works with hosts file, but otherwise not) sounds like a DNS issue.
  • Personally, I wish this site had never been introduced. I'm still stuck on the first level.
  • Right. It is a DNS issue. The question is, how do I fix it?
  • I've just started - and they really need an FAQ. What happens when I run out of turns? Is the game over then?
  • Jick hates you.
  • Here's a bunch of suggested fixes for a similar-sounding problem.
  • jb... you get a specific number of turns per day (starting at 40) but can get a few more per day through various things. One thing that I found very difficult when I started was getting ANY sort of assistance from anyone that didn't involve some cryptic haiku. The game actually honed my google skills quicker than anything else. It is fun, to a degree... but nothing I spend more than an hour here and there on.
  • Well, if "connect by neighbour's WiFi" is with the same PC that doesn't work through your own ISP, that would seem to me to make it the ISP's problem to fix, since your PC would appear to be OK.
  • Here's a good list of external help sites for the game.
  • My pastamancer is now lvl 3.
  • ...and I still can't access the site. Too weird.
